INTRODUCCIN

La guerra del Opio o Guerraanglo-china fueron dos conflictosblicos que ocurrieron en elsigloXIX entre losimperioschino ybritnico.LaPrimera dur entre1839 y1842.LaSegunda,en la que Francia seimplic con los britnicos, estall

en1856 y dur hasta1860.Lascausas fueron los conflictoscomerciales entre China y el ReinoUnido. China estaba intentandoprohibir el consumo de drogas, particularmente del destructivo opio quegeneraba fuertes adicciones entre su poblacin con las gravesconsecuencias sociales y econmicas mientras que Gran Bretaacontrabandeaba el opio procedente de la India britnica y lo introduca enChina. El opio era una droga que tradicionalmente se usaba masivamente

(mezclado con tabaco) en China desde el siglo XV con fines medicinales;los europeos entablaron relaciones con los traficantes de droga chinos, aquienes vendan grandes cantidades de opio (5.000 barriles por ao en ladcada de 1820) desde pases como Birmania. A cambio loscontrabandistas reciban lujosos artculos chinos. El comercio creci afinales del siglo XVIII y, aunque el Gobierno Qing intent detenerlo, en ladcada de 1830 el opio se consuma ampliamente en China: hacaperezosas a las personas, daaba la sociedad y la economa, y causabaingentes gastos al pas. La derrota china en las dos guerras, forz algobierno a tolerar el comercio de opio. Los britnicos coaccionaron a loschinos para firmar los Tratados Desiguales, abriendo varios puertos alcomercio exterior y anexndose Hong Kong. Portugal sigui a losbritnicos, forzando trminos de intercambio desiguales a China y laampliacin de Macao, bajo control portugus desde el siglo XVI .

Tratados Desiguales es untrmino que hace referencia a la

alidad de condiciones en los quefueron firmados ciertos tratadosentre varios Estados del Este de

Asia y potencias extranjeras en elsiglo XIX. Aunque principalmentees usado para referirse a losfirmados por la Dinasta Qing deChina, tambin fueron desiguales los tratados firmados porel Shogunato Tokugawa de Japn y la Dinasta Joseon de Corea. Dichos

tratados fueron firmados durante el siglo XIX y principios del siglo XX,perodo en el cual esos Estados fueron incapaces de resistir las presionesmilitares y econmicas de las potencias de Occidente.

PRIMER GUERR

Dur entre 1839 y1842, por diferencias encuanto al comercio con opioen la China continental.Reino Unido buscaba laapertura del trfico de opio,mientras que el gobierno

imperial de la Chinaintentaba prohibirlo.

Antecedentes:

Debido a que el comercio con China era complicado, pues lasnaciones occidentales no posean nada de valor para intercambiar, seempezaron a buscar distintos mtodos, entre ellos la venta de drogas yadictivos a la poblacin. Para 1839, el opio surtido por Estados Unidos,Reino Unido y Francia haba alcanzado a los campesinos aislados y losobreros gastaban 2/3 de sus ganancias en mantener su adiccin. Anteesto, el emperador chino prohibi el opio y expuls a los comerciantesbritnicos, que al llegar a Londres se quejaron ante el gobierno britnico, elcual decidi atacar a China con su poderosa flota para obligarla a comprarel opio cultivado en la India britnica.

Consecuencias:

Las tropas chinas no pudieron hacer frente a los britnicos, serindieron ante ellos, y China tuvo que aceptar la rendicin con la firma delTratado de Nankn. El tratado se firm el ao de 1842 y estipulaba el fin dela Primera guerra del Opio.

Con l, China ceda la isla de Hong Kong al Reino Unido y aceptaba laapertura de sus puertos al comercio internacional. El 1 de julio de 1997Hong Kong fue devuelto a China (155 aos despus de la firma deltratado).

SEGUND GUERR

Esta guerra, en lacual Francia se implic con

los britnicos, estall en1856 y dur hasta 1860.Sus causas fueron losintereses comerciales quecre el contrabandobritnico de opio desde laIndia hacia China y losesfuerzos del Gobiernochino para imponer sus

leyes a ese comercio.

An tecedentes histr icos:

En la dcada de 1850 se vio un rpido crecimiento del imperialismo. Algunosobjetivos compartidos entre las potencias occidentales incluan expandir susmercados ultramarinos y establecer nuevos puertos de escala.

Tanto el acuerdo francs conocido como Tratado de Huangpu, como elpacto estadounidense llamado Tratado de Wangxia contenan clusulas quepermitan la renegociacin de dichos tratados despus de doce aos. En unesfuerzo de expandir sus territorios en China, el Reino Unido pidi a lasautoridades de la dinasta Qing renegociar lo acordado en el Tratado deNankn, en 1842.

Las demandas britnicas incluan que pudieran ejercer el libre comercio entoda China, legalizar la comercializacin del opio, abolir los impuestos aextranjeros para el trnsito interno, suprimir la piratera, regular el trfico decules (trabajadores semiesclavos) y permitir al embajador britnico residiren Pekn, entre otras cosas. La corte de los Qing rechaz las demandaspresentadas por el Reino Unido, Francia y los Estados Unidos.

Tratado d e Tianj in:

Se conoce como Tratadode Tianjin (o tambin por sunombre antiguo, Tratado deTientsin) a diversosdocumentos firmados enTianjin en junio de 1858 dandofin a la primera parte de laSegunda Guerra del Opio, enel cual Francia, Rusia y losEstados Unidos tomaron parte.

Dichos tratados fueron

inicialmente rechazados porlos chinos para ser firmados,pero posteriormente fueronaprobados y ratificados por elemperador de China Tongzhien la Convencin de Pekn de1860.

En este tratado se tomaron el cuenta los s iguientes p untos:

Se garantizaba la libertad religiosa para loscristianos en China. El Reino Unido, Francia, Rusia y los Estados Unidos tendran el

derecho de establecer legaciones diplomticas (pequeasembajadas) en Pekn, una ciudad cerrada en aquel tiempo.
