IU “Guest Account” DescriptionsThere are numerous accounts at IU that can be

described as “Guest” accounts. Different systems have different definitions of “Guest”

IU “Guest Account” DescriptionsNetwork Access account

(most commonly, but incorrectly, referred to as a “Guest” account)

Intended for use by visitors to IUB who need nothing more than Internet access via their own laptop through the IU wireless network. This account is available at no charge.

IU “Guest Account” DescriptionsConference account

Intended for use by participants of IU-sponsored conferences, workshops, or special programs who need access to secure IU-owned computing resources, such as the wired IU network, STCs, or network printing services.

Note: Conference technology fees may be assessed* per participant for these accounts; see Conference use of the Student Technology Centers

*may be waived if no UITS-owned resources will be used by the conference making the request.

IU “Guest Account” DescriptionsAffiliate account

Intended for individuals who are affiliated with IU, such as contractors and researchers, but who are not officially IU students, faculty, or staff (including hourly staff). These accounts must be sponsored by an IU faculty or staff member and may take a few days to get approved by UITS. See Information about sponsored computing accounts for IU affiliates

Intended for individuals with no formal relationship with Indiana University. Guest accounts are used primarily to access Oncourse & Onestart

Guest accounts can be, and are, created by the guest themselves at https://itaccounts.iu.edu – no KSB Departmental sponsorship or actions are required.

Networking Options Available to Guests Laptop Access

Wireless - Requires IU “Network Access” account & passphrase

- Quick (no 10 minute wait time) - Typically does not require VPN - Most laptops have built-in wireless

Wired - Requires IU “Affiliate” or “Conference” account & passphrase

- Typically does not require VPN - Does require IU specific Ethernet cable - Requires 10 minute wait & reboot to register

Requires access to IU desktop workstation (CG 3075, BU 419, etc)

Guest User Responsibilities

User may need to be Administrator (or be able to login as Administrator) for purposes of adding/modifying software (VPN, printers, etc)

User will need to adhere to UITS Guest user policies

Technology Services ResponsibilitiesTech Services can assist departments in the

following areas:Granting permission to KSB printers, file servers, etc, based upon timely request from sponsoring KSB department – last minute requests may not be able to be fulfilled

Tech Services can attempt to assist departments and guests:TroubleshootingVPN client settings

Depending on computer settings, user level access, and other variables, TS may not be able to configure some machines to successfully connect to the IU network

SummaryDepartment sponsoring guest is responsible for

creation of guest network accounts in a timely manner

Department sponsoring guest is responsible for management of guest username/passphrase

Guest may/may not need to have administrator level access on their own laptop (depends on specific needs of visitor)

TS is responsible for granting permission to KSB network resources, such as printers & file servers, per departmental request
