Guest Speaker Reflection Paragraph Instructions & Rubric
Health Care Essentials
Directions Neatly write or type a summary paragraph reflecting on the content shared by guest speakers with our Health Care Essentials class. Taking detailed notes during the speaker’s presentation will help you create a meaningful reflection paragraph. Your reflection paragraph should: 1. Summarize the main purpose of the speaker’s presentation and their name (including title) and where they work 2. Be supported with at least three specific facts/details that the guest speaker provided related to the main topic. 3. Highlight a detail mentioned by the guest speaker that either interested or surprised you, and explain why it did. 4. Include an additional question related to the presenter’s topic. 5. Conclude your paragraph with an overall statement that evaluates the significance of the topic explored (how/why is
this topic important, is this a career or focus that you would be interested in?, etc.) 6. Be written in complete sentences, use correct grammar, spelling, and formal writing conventions.
Please note that you are reviewing the subject matter, and not the person presenting the information to our class. A detailed rubric is included with these instructions and directions to clarify expectations and explain grading components. Example of a Quality Reflection Nurse Practitioner Elisa Newman is an employee of Scripps Hospital, and her presentation explained the various careers and education pathways in nursing. Her presentation highlighted the differences between nurse practitioners (NP), registered nurses (RN), and licensed vocational nurses (LVN) in terms of job responsibilities and educational requirements. Nurse Practitioners typically have a master’s degree of science in nursing (MSN), although PhD degrees are becoming more common among NPs. Schooling varies from 6‐8 years depending on the graduate degree chosen. Registered nurses usually complete a four year degree program to earn their bachelor’s degree of science in nursing (BSN), and licensed vocational nurses typically finish their program in 1 year, depending on the requirements of the state in which they intend to practice. I found it interesting that they are so many different types of nurses and nursing degrees available because I had always assumed all nurses were the same. It would be interesting to know how many nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and licensed vocation nurses practices medicine in California. I find myself wanting to learn more about the variety of nursing professions, as the job prospects seem very good, there is a high demand for nurses in America, and I could see myself in this type of career. Example of a Reflection Needing Minor Revisions Nurse Elisa Newman talked to us about being a nurse and nursing careers. Her presentation highlighted the differences between the types of nursing careers possible (licensed vocational nurse, registered nurse, and nurse practitioners. Nurse Practitioners usually have a master’s degree of science in nursing (MSN), but many are earning their PhDs. Registered nurses earn a bachelor’s degree of science in nursing (BSN), and licensed vocational nurses usually go to a community college for one year. I didn’t know that nurses spent more time with patients than doctors, and really thought doctors did more with patients than nurses did. I would like to find out which nursing schools are in California, and how hard it is to get into them. Overall, I have a better sense of the nursing careers that are available, and would be interested in learning more about these careers. Example of a Reflection Needing Major Revisions Elisa Newman talked to us about nurses, but I did not like her presentation because she was very boring. She talked about the differences in nursing careers. I didn’t know that nurses had to go to that many years of school. I didn’t find much of it interesting. I don’t have any questions, either. I would not want to be a nurse, and I didn’t like the presentation.
