“Of First Importance” I Corinthians 15:18

In these verses we discover four facts surrounding the resurrection and four responses we are called upon to make. The Apostle an-nounces these facts as those he, himself, had received and was now delivering to the church “as of first importance.” That is, the most im-portant thing you will ever learn is the truth and implications of Christ’s resurrection.

I. FOUR FACTS SURROUNDING the resurrection (vv. 3-8)

A. Christ DIED (v. 3b)

1. For our sins (v. 3b)

2. To fulfill scripture (v. 3d)

B. Christ was BURIED (v. 4a)

1. By two Jewish religious leaders (John 19:38-40)

2. In a garden tomb near Jerusalem (John 19:41)

C. Christ was RAISED (v. 4b)

1. On the third day (Mt. 17:22-23)

2. According to the Scriptures (Psalm 16:10)

D. Christ APPEARED BODILY (vv. 5-8)

(six of ten post resurrection appearances)

II. FOUR RESPONSES to the resurrection (vv. 1-2)

A. We need to HEAR IT (v. 1a)

B. We need to RECEIVE IT (v. 1b)

C. We need to BE SAVED BY IT (v. 2a)

D. We need to STAND IN IT (v. 1c)

We need to faithfully PROCLAIM THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST (v. 11 “...so we preached and so you believed”).

In my March “Word of Encouragement” I wrote about the initial need and probability of a New Church Start in the “McLoud West” area. With the closure of the former Son Rise Baptist Church, it was antici-pated that we may eventually use that facility as we launch a new work. Since the writing of that last article, much progress has been

made on the endeavor.

We have met with the Church Planting specialists from the BGCO and are following their process as closely as possible. We have been going through the Discovery Phase of the process in which we will identify a potential (1) primary partner, (2) planter, (3) people group

and (4) place.

Then one of the next steps needed is to enlist a “Cluster of Churches” that will commit to support the new work. If your church is interested, please let me know ASAP. There are several ways in which the cluster can help and this is real mission work in “our own

back yard” (i.e. PLBA).

Further steps are forth coming. I will be sending out a formal letter of request for support to the churches that express any interest. If your church has been praying and looking for a mission project/partnership, this may be the answer to your prayers. Please call the

association office for more details.

Encouragingly Yours, Russell Cook

A Nugget From My Spiritual Journey

PLBA WOMEN

It has been five years since Daddy suddenly left for his heavenly home. Al-though Daddy may have left suddenly, he left a lifetime heritage that will never be forgotten. I still think of him often…wish I could feel one of his strong hugs…see the twinkle in his blue eyes…hear his whistle…and see his time-and-work-worn hands skillfully playing his clarinet, baling hay, taking care of cattle, running a calculator, tending his beautiful rose garden, cooking a delicious meal or sailing a fishing line into a lake. Daddy left behind more than his earthly possessions. He left behind loved ones of many ages who either live by what he taught them or who are teaching those things to new little ones. He was a man of faithfulness, integrity, kindness, love, generosity, and hospitality. Yes, he had times of frustrations, disappointments, hurts, fears and difficulties, like anyone else. But, over the years, he learned how to handle them with the grace that comes from trusting the Lord. I am finding that God still provides opportunities for me to share some of what I learned from Daddy. Recently I was able to quietly share the testimony of his life with a gentleman who had tears in his eyes as he thoughtfully listened. He never knew Daddy, but I suspect they would have become friends if they had ever met. Yet, Daddy’s life still touched his. While Daddy and Mother lived out their final months in our home instead of theirs, I clearly recognized that although he had been a hard worker all of his life, when Life begins to end, all of that has little to no significance any more. Yes, God wants us to work, not be lazy, and to provide for our families. But, I learned by watching them that Life’s greatest asset is all about relationships. Our personal relationship with the Lord and our relationship with our loved ones and friends is what matters in the end. When we leave this Earth, relationships are all that we take with us. I’m thankful I got to observe firsthand those final days of Daddy’s spiritual jour-ney, so I would know better how to continue on with my own journey. Thank you, Daddy, for continuing to parent me—even though you are no longer where I can see you or feel your hugs. Thank you for leaving a heritage I can share with many others. You lived what the song says, “May all who come behind us find us faith-ful…” Marsha Cook, Director
