Introduction
Spanish is the world’s fourth most commonly spoken lan-guage, and the second language of international commu-nication. 400 million people, in around 20 countries, speakSpanish, and many others study Spanish in universities, academies, business schools, and in primary and second-ary education in almost all the world’s nations. It is alsothe mother tongue of Cervantes, Federico García Lorca,Borges, García Márquez, Mario Vargas Llosa and PedroAlmodóvar, which are only some of the great names thathave made the culture of Spain and Latin America one of the most open, plural, diverse and creative.
Since 1991, the Instituto Cervantes has worked tospread Spanish – it is the largest institution in the worlddedicated to teaching Spanish – and to foster the cul-tures of Spanish-speaking countries. This Guide givesinformation on the services offered by the Instituto:courses in Spanish and co-official languages in Spain, bothattendance courses and courses on the Internet; SpanishDiplomas (DELE); teacher training; cultural activities;libraries and documentation centres; the CervantesVirtual Centre (CVC) on the network; support to His-panic studies; publications; television and radio pro-grammes... I trust that all this will useful.
