TRANSCRIPT

Giving is an integral part of every reunion celebration, and we hope you will consider making a gift. Guilford depends on gifts like yours to sustain its educational mission and continue to produce critically thinking, creative problem-solvers like you who promote positive change in the world.

Approximately 92% of students attend Guilford with the assistance of scholarships, grants, loans and/or on-campus employment.

Many of the scholarships awarded to students are provided through the generous contributions of Guilford alumni. Your reunion gift helps open the door for other students to experience an excellent, transformative and practical liberal arts education.

You can choose! Designate your gift, and 100% of your contribution will be allocated to the area of your choice.

When making a gift to Guilford, you have the flexibility of designating your gift to a major, program or fund. Guilford’s five annual funds are: The Loyalty Fund, Quaker Club, Friends of the Library, Friends Center and Center for Continuing Education (CCE) Fund. Your gift is tax-deductible, and 100% of your gift to Guilford goes directly to the area of your choice.

Big and small, your participation is what counts!

Up for a little friendly competition? Participate with your classmates as each reunion year strives to meet and exceed their reunion year goal. All gifts, large and small, count equally toward the participation percentage. Any gift made between July 1, 2010, and June 30, 2011, counts toward your class’ reunion participation goal. Track your class’ progress online at guilford.edu/reunion.

Reunion 2011 is specially designed with a unique array of events and programs sure to make your return to campus unforgettable. Reunite with old friends and recapture the “good ol’ days” with dorm living and the Back to School lecture series featuring engaging academic content from a variety of disciplines with current and emeriti faculty. And the best part... no homework or tests!

Explore campus with special tours and open houses, party by the lake with former classmates over lunch at the Not So Serendipitous concert and savor a panoply of fine foods and wine at your class dinner. Whether it‘s been five or 50 years since your last visit, each reunion is an important milestone. We look forward to celebrating with you in the spring.

Session I: Zombies and the UndeadPresented by Heather Hayton, associate professor and English Department chair

Wonder why there are so many books, movies, games and TV shows about zombies, vampires and the undead recently? Feel like a member of the undead community yourself some days? Whether you want to know what all the fuss is about or if you are a fan of rigor mortis join us for this class! Brains Brain-food Snacks provided.

Session II: Leadership Styles and the Effectiveness of TeamsPresented by Kent John Chabotar, president and professor of political science

Using a framework from Native American tradition, we will explore your leadership style and how you can become more successful and well rounded. In addition, we will discuss how to build your team to compensate for your weaknesses and extend your strengths.

Rekindle your intellectual passions through our exciting Back to School lecture series where faculty from a variety of disciplines share their pursuits and expertise inthese engaging and enlightening discussions.

Session III: Allen Jay, Guilford College and the Renewal of Southern QuakerismPresented by Max Carter, director of Friends Center and Campus Ministry coordinator

Northern Friends helped the entire Quaker Community in the South by keeping New Garden Boarding School open during the war and afterward by organizing an association to rebuild its economy, educational system and spiritual vitality. This class will discuss the Allen Jay, a simple farmer from Indiana who was instrumental in this work.

Session IV: Antarctica: Bellwether of Climate ChangePresented by Dave MacInnes, director of faculty development

The International Polar Year has just ended, and many countries and groups had projects to study the Antarctic climate and its history. This lecture will introduce you to today’s climate change studies in Antarctica. After which, the class will analyze the data and develop a recommendation to the next climate treaty conference.

Session V: Inuit “Shamanism” and Sedna - Mother of the Sea BeastsPresented by Eric Mortensen, assistant professor of religious studies

This lecture will examine the variant folkloric accounts of Sedna, problematize the equation of the angakok as “shaman,” and discuss issues including Sedna as female victim, the anxiety of the hunt in the changing Arctic world and the “panning for gold” in the search for religious meaning in oral folk traditions.

Session VI: Art and the EnvironmentPresented by Kathryn Shields, assistant professor of art

This lecture will discuss environmental art in order to provide a historical and artistic framework for understanding the work of North Carolina artist Patrick Dougherty (sculpture was installed on the Guilford quad). The seeds of art like Dougherty’s can be found in the earthworks and land art of the 1970s.
