    Introduction

What is guitar tapping? Guitar Tapping is one of the many techniqfor guitar. It involves one finger on your picking hand to hammer o

any note above the lick played with your fretting hand.

For a more in depth lesson for tapping check out the Guitar Tappi

page at Full Score Guitar Lessons.com.

What finger to I use when tapping? You can use any finger you wa

Eddie Van Halen uses his first finger. I use my second finger.

Eventually this tapping lesson will grow into tapping with all 4 finge

So, youre going to end up using all of your fingers so choose the on

    your most comfortable with.

Can I tap any note above the lick I play with my fretting hand?

Yes...and no. What I mean is you can tap any note above your lick

but if its not in the same key then it might not sound as good as th

    other notes in the scale.

Although, you will find notes that are out of the scale youre playing

that will sound great with it. This is where your ear comes in handy

This is your music. Never limit yourself to playing in the key.

    Lets get started!

    Lesson 1

    4 Notes Per Beat

We will start this lesson off by learning 25 different 4 notes per bea

tapping licks. I will walk you through every one so you get the most

    out of each example.

    Lick#1

Here is the first lick. The symbol (T)

shows you what note you need to (Tap)

    with your picking hand.

Need help with reading tabs or sheet music?

Click here to learn how to read guitar tabs.

Click here to learn how to read sheer music.

With this lick and every lick after this use yourmetronome.

Start each lick really slow around 60 beats per minute, and

move the beats per minute up as you get comfortable at that speed.

Make sure you play them how they are written. For example,

you will play four notes to every beat in the example above.

    5/34

    Lick#2

Lick 2 is pretty simple as well. Tapping with

your picking hand on the 12th fret.

The pull off on the 8th fret to the 7th may

be a little harder to get sounding clean than

the hammer ons. Get this down slow first.

    Lick#3

This lick has a really unique

technique in it. The ( / ) symbol

is a slide. When you see this you are

going to slide up or down to the note

    after the /.

This technique requires you to tap

on the 8th fret with your picking hand then slide your fretting hand

    finger to the same note.

You will see this more in this lesson. When I do this technique I

tap the 8th fret with my second finger then as I do a pull off my

fretting hand is on around the 3rd fret (I like to make it sound like

a big slide) and I slide my fretting hand up to the same fret.

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    6/34

It doesnt matter what note you slide from on your fretting hand

because you are immediately sliding once your picking hand has

    pulled off the note.

This will take practice, but you will use this all the time once its

    comfortable.

    Lick#4

This lick has another strange but awesome

technique in it. In this you will tap the 12thfret and hammer on from 0 to 10 with your

fretting hand. Youre going to have to make

room for your picking hand to tap the same

    note.

I hammer on with my fret hand then as Im lifting my finger off the

note (this makes more room for the picking hand) Im hammering o

    with my picking hand.

This will also take time to get comfortable. Practice practice practice.

    Lick#5

Lick 5 doesnt need much explaining. This is

a standard tapping lick. By now you probably

    have noticed the this symbol

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    7/34

This is a slur. When you see this it just means that you wont pick an

note you will just hammer on and pull off as needed.

    Lick#6

Lick 6 is another self explanatory example.

You have to start somewhere. These first licks

are building your tapping foundation. If these

are a little difficult then Click Here to start

    from the beginning.

These licks are for the guitar tappers who want to take their knowledg

of tapping to the next level.

The following licks will become harder and more advanced. I know if

you practice with a metronome and start slow you can get any of these

    up to shredding speeds.

    Lick#7

Here is another great technique. This lick

involves you to tap with your picking hand

on the 10th fret then slide, while holding

your note with your picking hand, to the 12th

fret and back to the 10th fret while keeping

    time.

You will hear this a lot in Paul Gilberts

playing. This will feel odd at first, but its one of the most used tappin

    techniques for guitar.

    8/34

    Lick#8

Here is another basic tapping lick.

Make sure you slide when you play from the3rd fret to the 2nd fret.

    Lick#9

Lick 9 has two different tapping slides inMake sure that the notes sound clean an

are sounding out during the slides.

    Lick#10

Pretty simple stuff here too. If you keep your

first finger of your fretting hand by the 3rd

fret and your third finger by the 5th fret you

wont have to move around as much.

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    9/34

    Lick#11

This lick requires you to stretch a little with

your fretting hand. Make sure to stretch your

hands and wrists before playing and when youfeel any tension.

    Lick#12

Here you are going to start off this lick with ahammer on with your fretting hand. Make sure

you get the slide at the end.

Try using your third finger to slide that way your

first finger is right there on the 5th fret to start the lick over again.

    Lick#13

Lick 13 is another tapping slide. Im throwing

a lot of these in here so you can get used to

    them.

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    10/34

    Lick#14

In this example you are going to tap slide from

the 8th fret to the 7th fret and immediately get

back to the 10th fret to start the riff again.

    Lick#15

We are starting off with a low tapping at the 5th

fret. This one shouldt take long to master.

    Lick#16

This is a downstroke symbol. When you se

this it means you are going to play the noteits above with your pick.

So, you will pick the open e string and

    continue with the pattern.

Once you get to the end of the pattern you can just pull off from the 8thfret to the open e string to start the lick over instead of having to pick th

    first note every time.

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    11/34

    Lick#17

Remember the tap and slide to the same note

technique we learned earlier? Well here it is

    again.

This whole lick is nothing but tapping a note

and sliding up to the same note.

This is a great exercise to practice if you want to get this technique down

    Lick#18

Here is something simple and fun. When you

play this lick you are double tapping the 12th

fret before you move to the other notes.

This technique played up to speed sounds

    amazing!

    Lick#

    19

At the end of this lick you are tapping on the 10th

fret the hammering off to 0. Immediately after,

you are going right back to the 10th fret to slide

    the beginning of the riff.

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    12/34

    Lick#20

You should be comfortable with this one. We

played one like this earlier in the lesson.

    Lick#21

This is very similar to the previous lick

    Lick#22

Again, we have an example that starts off by

picking the first note. You can treat this one like

    the lick#

    16. At the end just pull off 5 to 0 to startthe lick again.

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    13/34

    Lick#23

This is another tapping lick with a stretch in it.

Try to use your first, third, and fourth fingers to

    play the 5, 7, and 9th fret.

    Lick#24

At the end of this riff you want to keep your

fretting hand on the 7th fret because you aregoing to pull off from the end of the riff (15th fre

back to the 7th fret to start it again.

    Lick#25

This is the last 4 notes per beat tapping lick.

This has a big stretch from the 3rd fret to the 7th

    fret.

Now that you have mastered all the 4 note per

beat licks here and are comfortable with tapping

you can move on to the...

    14/34

    Lesson 2

    5 Notes Per Beat

Now we have the 5 notes per beat tapping licks.

These are a little more difficult in the fact that you have to evenly

space 5 notes inside one click of the metronome.

These will take time to master, but once you get the feel for 5 notes

per beat then it becomes second nature.

    Lick#26

I made this first lick pretty simple so you can

get the 5 notes per beat down.

Remember to practice slow and make it clean.

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    15/34

    Lick#27

Lick 27 repeats itself twice within the lick.

Use your first finger to slide the 3rd fret to the

5th fret so your pinky can hammer on the 8thfret.

    Lick#28

Although this might seem like an easylick, if your fingers havent played this

particular pattern before it will be oddly

difficult to get up to speed.

    Lick#29

This lick uses the technique used in lick 4.

You will hammer on the 10th fret with your

fretting hand then tap it with your picking

    hand.

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    16/34

    Lick#30

This example will be weird at first but you will

get used to it really quick.

    Lick#31

This one may be the easiest of all the

    5 note per beat licks.

You shouldt have much trouble with thi

    one.

    Lick#32

At the end of this lick you are going to have

to be quick and move from pulling off on

the 7th fret to hammering on the 12th fretat the beginning of the riff.

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    17/34

    Lick#33

    This is another simple lick.

No explanation is needed for this one.

    Lick#34

When you get this one up to speed it is a great

shredding lick. You should have a goal tempo

for every lick. Be realistic and stick to it until

    you reach your goal.

    Lick#35

This lick only has one tap in it. This may

throw you off since the groupings of 5 arent

    distinct.

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    18/34

    Lick#36

This is almost like the last one. This tap lick

has more movement and quite a stretch than

    the last one.

    Lick#37

In this lick I brought back the tapslide from lesson 1. On this one

your fretting hand can stay in

    the same place.

    Lick#38

Here you can leave your hands in the same

position as well. Keep your first finger ofyour fretting hand above the third fret and

your third finger on your fretting hand can

be above the 5th fret. Your picking hand will

stay above the 7th fret for the tap slide.

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    19/34

    Lick#39

Keep your first finger of your fretting hand

above the 5th fret and use your third and

fourth fingers to play the 7th, and 8th frets.

    Lick#40

    This lick has another complicated

technique. This involves your frettinghand to play the note above your tapping

hand while keeping your tapping hand

    on the string.

So, when you get to the tap on the 7th fret you will hold that note and w

the middle finger of your fretting hand you will come around your tappi

finger and hammer on the 8th fret then pull off back to the note you ar

    holding with your picking hand.

Practice this one really slow so you get the clean sounds and righttechnique.

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    20/34

    Lick#41

Start this lick by just hammering on the 7th

    fret not picking it.

    Lick#42

Here is a lot of movement. Take this one

slow. There isnt anything in this riff thatstoo difficult.

    Lick#43

This should be easy for you by now. Other

than the timing you should get this right off

    the bat.

    Lick#44

Here is more tapping slides. Nothing

    too hard though.

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    21/34

    Lick#45

This is the last lick for the 5 notes

per beat. It has a fast change in the

end from tapping on the 8th fret tothe beginning of the riff on the 10th

    fret.

You are now ready for the 6 notes per beat tapping licks.

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    22/34

    Lesson 3

    6 Notes Per Beat

Surprisingly these will be a little easier because of the even number

    of notes per beat.

Although, they are going to get more difficult and more notes means

    more to practice and memorize.

You are half way there to mastering 1 string tapping!

    Lick#46

For this first lick you wont do anything

crazy. This is a simple 6 note per beat

    riff.

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    23/34

    Lick#47

Here is one of the more simple riffs. This

lick is just grouping sets of 3. By now you

probably noticed how much easier it is tocount these licks than the 5 note per beat

    ones.

    Lick#48

    This lick involves picking the

    first note and tapping slides.

Your fretting hand can stay in

    the same position the whole

    time.

    Lick#49

We had a lick like this one earlier

where you tap the same note that you

    just hammered on.

This is just alternating between the

10th fret and the 12th fret. Make room for your picking hand finger

    to tap the same note.

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    24/34

    Lick#50

This shouldt give you any trouble. Basically

youre just tapping down the neck.

    Lick#51

    This lick alternates between hammering

on and pulling off after the tap.

    Lick#52

If you keep your fretting hand in the

same position for this it will make ita lot easier.

    Lick#53

Your fretting hand plays the same thing

both times here. Your tapping is the only

thing that changes. Pretty simple stuff.

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    25/34

    Lick#54

Again, here we are just alternating

between hammer ons and pull offs.

    Lick#55

Here your picking hand is going to move

a little bit. Getting from the 12th fret tothe 15th fret to slide will take some time

    to get down clean.

    Lick#56

A good way to practice these are to play

them with the finger you feel most

comfortable with then using a different

finger. This makes it interesting and

helps you get used tapping with other

    fingers.

    Lick#57

In this lick make sure you are sliding

with your fretting hand from the 5th

fret to the 3rd and the 3rd to the 2nd.

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    26/34

    Lick#58

Pick the first note of this exercise.

This has a lot of movement. Its not a

long move, but at high speeds it getsa little confusing.

    Lick#59

This uses almost all of thetechniques we have learned in

this lesson. You will tap slide in

the beginning and tap and slide

    with your fretting hand twice.

This one will be confusing at first

Whip out that metronome and go SLOW!

    Lick#60

Here is a break from the confusing.

This one should take no time to

    master at all.

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    27/34

    Lick#61

This is a fun one to play up to speed.

This is also the last of the 6 notes per

    beat licks.

After this you are ready to take down probably the hardest licks yet.

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    28/34

    Lesson 3

    7 Notes Per Beat

Now you are ready for the 7 notes per beat licks. These next 17 lick

are all going to be somewhat challenging at first. The odd number

of notes in each group makes each lick a challenge to get the

    timing just right.

    Lick#62

I made this first one really simple so you

can get the timing of 7 notes per beat

    down.

    Lick#63

Here is a lick that has fret hand slides

in it. Everything is the same. The only

thing is the slides are opposite.

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    29/34

    Lick#64

If you pull off the 12th fret tap to

your pinky finger on the 10th fret

it will make the whole lick easier.

    Lick#65

You are going to tap the same note as

your fretting hand in this lick try tohammer on with your fretting hand

towards the top of the fret so you can

get your picking hand in there.

    Lick#66

This lick has the double tapping in it.

When you play this up to speed it

sounds really great. Get all of these

riffs up to the speed you want and

mess with them and make your own.

    Lick#67

This is the highest tapping lick here.

In this lick you will have to use all 4

of your fretting hand fingers to make

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    30/34

the stretch. This needs to be played slow at first.

If you feel any tension in your wrist remember to

take a break and massage them.

    Lick#68

Here is another great lick for

learning tap slides. Your fret hand

can stay in the same position the

    whole time.

    Lick#69 Lick#70

Here in lick 70 you will pick inside the

tapping lick twice. This will take practic

to get clean and comfortably. Try not tomove your picking hand all the way ba

to its normal position. Instead, try to

pick the string up on the frets. This wil

odd at first. Unless you have practiced

    before.

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    31/34

    Lick#70

Again you are going to have to

    pick twice inside the lick.

    Lick#71 Lick#72

    Lick#73

You are going to have to hammer on with

your fretting hand above your picking hanagain in this lick.

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    32/34

    Lick#74

This lick is a little different. Once

its played fast it can become

confusing. The double tappingis used twice and it doesnt help

that there are an odd number of

    notes in each group.

    Lick#75

This is really cool and easy for

    this odd number grouping.

You will probably get this one right

    off.

    Lick#76

Lick 76 is really tough at first

but its really not all that hard.

    All the movement makes this

riff harder than it really is.

  • 7/29/2019 Guitar Tapping 1 Finger eBook

    33/34

    Lick#77

Here is the last of the 7 notes

per beat licks. The tapping in

this lick is like the same notetapping. You will tap the 8th

fret with and pull off to your

fretting hand sliding into the 5th fret.

You will do this for all the slides in this example.

Well, there it is. Now that all of these tapping licks are under your belt

you can easily say that you have mastered 1 string tapping licks.

If you are ready to take your tapping to the next level then keep your ey

out for the upcoming book How To Master 2 String Tapping!

Here are some examples of the next lesson.

Until next time. I hope you enjoyed this and found it helpful. Leave me
