Glimpses of GurukulIt was at the second meeting of the All India Lutheran Conference held in 1912 that efforts were initiated to establish a higher standard theological institution to train pastors and other Church workers for serving in all the Lutheran Churches in India. This project, however, could not be pursued due to the outbreak of First World War in 1914. In 1923, the then secretary of the Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church (TELC) attended the first meeting of the Lutheran World Convocation held at Eisenach, and stressed the urgent need for establishing the proposed Lutheran Theological College in Madras (now known as Chennai). The same need was presented to the Mission Supporters in Germany, Sweden, Denmark and the United States of America. In July 1927, the first step was taken to establish a Lutheran Theological College in Madras for the Tamil area. In the mean time, the Federation of Lutheran Churches in India (FELCI - now known as the United Evangelical Lutheran Churches in India) was formed in 1925. The Leipzig Mission offered its Kilpauk property in Madras to run a Seminary as a common Theological School to serve all the Lutheran Churches in India. Accordingly, in July 1953, Gurukul Lutheran Theological College and Research Institute was established in Madras to impart higher theological education for the efficient training of ministers, teachers, and other Christian leaders for the Christian churches. It was registered under the Society Registration Act of 1860 on 18 June 1962 to function as a full-fledged theological institution, and thereafter affiliated with the Senate of Serampore College (University), Serampore, West Bengal.

Later, in response to strengthen ecumenical relations, and in order to make Gurukul a Centre for praxis-oriented continuing theological education programmes, the academic programmes of Gurukul were transferred to the United Theological College, Bangalore and Serampore College, Serampore, in the year 1971. However, later having felt the need for new directions to make theological education in India more relevant, Gurukul was revived in 1985. Realising the distinctive role Gurukul could play in this regard, Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.), Master of Theology (MTh.) and the Doctoral of Theology programmes were initiated respectively in 1985, 1989 and 1998, with an overall thrust to impart “A Bold Theological Vision” in theological education in India.

It is significant to note that the word “Gurukul” is Indian. It is a Sanskrit word, ‘guru’ (teacher) ‘kulam’ (family). That is, in the Vedic system of education, where the students used to live with the teacher as a family to learn and seek knowledge from the Guru. This intimate relationship between the teacher and the student is a strong feature of Gurukul even today.

I. ManagementGurukul Lutheran Theological College is governed by the Gurukul College Council (GCC), which consists of members from all the constituent churches of the United Evangelical Lutheran Churches in India (UELCI), and from the ecumenical churches such as the Church of South India (CSI), Church of North India (CNI) and the Marthoma Church, which meets annually to offer directions and to revise policies from time to time for the smooth functioning of the College and the Executive committee appointed by the Gurukul College Council meets twice a year to take decisions that strengthen the day-to-day functioning of Gurukul. The Principal looks after the academic administration of the college implementing the overall programmes in line with the rules and regulations of the Senate of Serampore College and the continuing theological education programmes of Applied Theology to cater the needs of the churches. The Treasurer of the Gurukul College Council looks into the financial matters related to College.

II. Academic Programmes Gurukul offers Graduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral Research programmes recognised by the Senate of Serampore College. The Bachelor of Divinity (BD) degree course which is of four years duration and also B.Th. to BD Upgrading programme of two years programme for B.Th. degree holders of the Senate of Serampore College, and tries to integrate courses that are stipulated by the Senate of Serampore College (University) and other special courses that reflect the nature of the ‘Bold Theological Vision’ of Gurukul in order to make the study of theology holistic and contextual. The Master of Theology degree course is of two years duration for BD degree holders of Senate of Serampore College, and for the academic year 2019-2020 Gurukul is offering M.Th. studies in the disciplines of Christian Theology, History of Christianity, Communication, Women Studies, Old Testament and Missiology. The Doctor of Theology (D.Th.) is oriented towards research. Doctor of Theology (D.Th) is offered in the Department of Christian Theology and History of Christianity.

III. Initiatives of ‘Bold Theological Vision’The revival of Gurukul in 1985 brought about new insights in theological thinking and training in Christian ministry. These new insights were conceptualised and incorporated in the entire programme - teaching, training and continuing education -

of the College as ‘new thrusts’. This Bold Vision, calls for a praxis-oriented theological theory and practice; action and reflection, which include concerns for:

1. WOMEN’s empowerment for equality in both church and society expressed through the introduction of courses on Gender studies in theological education programme of the Senate of Serampore College, encouraging women to become forerunners in the mission of the Church. Gurukul is the first theological institution in India to establish Department of Women’s studies, later renamed as Gender Studies. Priorities are given to women in scholarships, appointments, publication resources, etc.

2. DALITS Studies is another pioneering area in theology with concern for the caste-based oppressed people in India, who comprise majority in the Indian Church. A separate department of Dalit Theology is established to develop courses in Dalit Theology at the B.D., and MTh, levels and to organise seminars and consultations to highlight the issues faced by Dalits in the Indian society and the Church. Gurukul is a leading and pioneering theological institution concerned about publication of theological literature on Dalit issues.

3. CHRISTIAN COMMUNICATION: Though communication is primordial in nature, its significance and importance has been realised only during the later half of the last century. Seeing the incredible developments in this field has made people to call the 21st Century, a century of Communication. Its significance is seen in every walk of life to develop human relationships on the one hand and the marvels of new media on the other. Hence, pastoral training needs to be given importance to this new trend, as pastors are basically communicators, whose daily activities involve in relationship building, preaching, teaching, administration, etc., and which requires better skills in communication. Gurukul responds to these challenges by introducing new and innovative courses in all aspects of communication from a Christian perspective, including computer applications to its students. It endeavours to make the fruits of new communication technology available to students so that the students can have easy access to books, periodicals, archival materials for research using computer skills.

4. WIDENING FRONTIERS OF CHRISTIAN THEOLOGY (Summer Institute) is an effort of Gurukul to organise a get-together of theological educators, church leaders development activists, social scientists, economists to engage in discussions on contextual issues under the theme of ‘Widening Frontiers of Christian Theology’ during summer vacations. Eleven such institutes on the subjects of specific thrusts had taken place in the past and their research papers and

keynote addresses are now published. These not only serve as tools for teaching the new courses offered at the theological institutions but also serve as advocacy material to bring awareness in the Church and Society.

5. GREEN THEOLOGY is a reflection on the emergence of a new awareness and response for protecting our world and its environment. As a theological response Green Theology aims to understand Christian doctrines and Church’s teachings in the light of ecology and environment. The Green Theology is another pioneering effort of Gurukul to develop courses with concern for care of the earth and aims to contextualize theological education that is relevant to the realities of our contemporary times from the perspectives of Ecology and environment.

6. SCIENCE AND RELIGION is another new field of study in theological education introduced recently to relate our faith to the developments in Science and technology. Courses have been developed and introduced for both B.D. and MTh. Studies.

IV. INTERFAITH DIALOGUE: In a multi-faith and secular context everyone has the right to be understood and the duty to understand. It is not proper to compare the negative aspects of one religious community with the positive dimensions of another. Good understanding of our neighbours or colleagues of other faiths helps us grow in maturity. Against this background Gurukul started a programme on interfaith dialogue. Ecumenical Dialogue Centre India (EDCI), an initiative of the United Evangelical Lutheran Churches in India (UELCI) is also located on Gurukul campus with a mediation hall and Gurukul in collaboration with EDCI organises many programmes on Interfaith Dialogue and Interfaith Relations at grass root level.

V. Spiritual life Spirituality is the central focus of Gurukul. It aims at genuine and authentic spiritual formation as much as personal, academic and ministerial formations. The Schwan Memorial Chapel continues to be the centre of spiritual life in Gurukul. Gurukul chapel is an outstanding example of indigenous architecture. It is built in the form of a Mandapam. The altar is constructed as a Sumaithangi to symbolise Christ’s call to all people to place their burden on Him. It is a memorial gift of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Toledo, Ohio in honour of Dr. C. D. Schwan, a pastor at the congregation in Toledo and later lifelong missionary in the South Andhra Lutheran Church.

It is a place of personal meditation, daily morning worship, midweek community worship, Sunday evening Community Worship. Retreats at the beginning of each semester, and on Ash Wednesday are times to strengthen our spiritual formation. Efforts are made to create awareness in the worshippers of the need to relate one’s faith to the socio-economic, political, and cultural realities of today. “Prayer Network” an initiative of UELCI where Gurukul community along with UELCI and local pastors and congregations meets every Tuesday afternoons between 03:00 and 06:00 p.m. and on second Saturdays for fasting prayer from morning 06:00 to evening 06:00.

VI. The LibraryThe Martin Luther Library is the centre for academic excellence. It has more than 60,000 volumes. Students are given training on how to use and access the online resources for their class and research work. During the academic year 2016-2017 an “Online Library” was initiated and dedicated through the generous contributions of Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) with 20 work stations, where the Gurukul students, faculty as well as scholars from other seminaries, secular colleges and universities and also pastors are the beneficiaries of the library resources.

VII. Community life Community life is the key for enhancing personal formation, ministerial formation, spiritual formation and academic formation. Students are encouraged to engage themselves to participate in the life of the community, making the college community as a base community for theological reflection. Student activities, such as, Student Christian Movement, Social and Theological Forum, Informal Discussion Groups, Fine-arts Society, Sports and Games, Interfaith Dialogue, Celebrations of cultural and national festivals, etc., enhances the joy of the community and serves as a platform to exhibit and improve the talents and gifts of the students. Students take active part in organising various programmes under the guidance of a faculty member.

The “Tutorial Groups” are small groups of students with a Faculty member for a one-to-one sharing and interaction. The function of a tutorial group also enables the faculty member to be a mentor and a liaison between the students and the administration on matters pertaining to the students’ academic work and their other needs while in the college. “Guru-Sishya Groups” is another forum where group of students (Sishyas) are associated with one faculty member (Guru) which meets once in a month for informal fellowship.

VIII. The FacultyGurukul takes pride in the fact that it has a highly competent and ecumenical faculty, deeply committed to explore new dimensions of Christian faith and values. At present Gurukul has 17 full time, five part time faculty members from Lutheran Churches, Church of South India, Church of North India, Marthoma Church, and Methodist Church in India.

This forms the basic ecumenical character of Gurukul, expressed in its academic programmes and societal involvement in building up the people of God in the missionary engagement of the Church within the contemporary Indian context.

IX. Aims and ObjectivesGurukul Lutheran Theological College and Research Institute is both an academic and Applied Centre of Theology. It conceives theological education as a means to understanding the Gospel in the Indian context, particularly in the context of the marginalised. It equips individuals to become agents of transformation and liberation of the whole society. Its approach is holistic and therefore, aims at:

conceiving and building a relevant theological education taking into consideration the hope and aspirations, the pain and pathos of the marginalised, especially the women, dalit, tribals and adivasi

inculcating the values of the Reign of God

evolving a praxis oriented method of teaching and learning

preparing and equipping women and men for pastoral and other varied ministries of the church and society

fostering an inclusive community through corporate worship, mutual care and fellowship

kindling a spirit of inquiry which encourages freedom of critical reflection and research

responsibly engaging in the social struggles of the contemporary society

disseminating knowledge and information to the church and society at large through seminars, consultations, workshops, training programmes and publications.Aims and Objectives of Theological Education {as articulated by the Senate of Serampore College (University)}

Theological Education has the broader goal of equipping the people of God, the congregations, in their respective contexts, for living out the doxological-

liturgical, koinonial, reflective, diakonal and mission dimensions of their existence, with a strong commitment to the liberation of the down-trodden (dalit, adivasi, tribal, women, the differently-abled, persons with HIV and AIDS, etc.), reconciliation among all human beings (particularly in the multi-religious and pluralistic contexts), and the integration and renewal of God’s wider creation (particularly in the context of ecological crises). In other words the aim of theological education is to cultivate an integral and holistic spirituality that would enable the students to be sustained in their commitment to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to be committed to the guidance of the Holy Spirit in their living out the truth and values of the Gospel, that would help them become faithful and effective ministers/teachers/servant-leaders in and through the Church.

Therefore the academic, spiritual, professional and personal/communitarian and vocational formation of candidates under the Serampore System is taken seriously. It is also essential to cultivate an ecumenical perspective, which is informed both by one’s own inherited tradition as well as by others’ traditions in the Indian religious context and develop an open-minded and respectful attitude towards them, without giving up the concern to be constructively critical and self-critical.
