Carlin Shoemaker is in his eighth season on the Gustavus football coaching staff in 2019, serving as the team’s co-offensive coordina- tor, quarterbacks coach, and recruiting coordinator. A native of Graham, Wash- ington, Shoemaker completed his undergraduate studies in the spring of 2007, earning a degree in psychology from Kenyon College. A three-time All North Coast Athlet- ic Conference (NCAC) performer in 2004, 2006, and 2007, Carlin concluded his career by being named the team’s MVP his senior season. In addition to his career on the football field, Shoemaker also competed on the Kenyon baseball team. Following his playing career at Kenyon, Shoemaker served as a graduate assistant coach at St. Cloud State University from 2008-10. With his masters in sports management on the way, Shoemaker made his way into the MIAC with Carleton College in 2010 where he served as the quarterbacks coach. After a year in Northfield and prior to taking the job at Gustavus, he took a position as the co-offensive coordinator at his alma mater, Kenyon, for the 2011 season. Carlin currently resides in St. Peter with his wife, Courtney, and daughter Sloan. Charlie Cosgrove is in his 11th season on the Gustavus football coaching staff in 2019, serving as the team’s co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Prior to coming to Gustavus, Cosgrove served as a graduate assistant at St. Cloud State University for two years. A 2006 graduate of St. Cloud State with a major in mass communications, Cosgrove was a standout defensive end for the Huskie football squad. He played in a total of 42 games and earned All-Conference honors three times. Cosgrove was named to the National Football Coaches Association All-America Team in 2005, and was also named the North Central Conference Defen- sive Lineman of the Year his senior season. Charlie lives in St. Peter with his wife, Elizabeth, and their two children, Luella and Vincent. As we gear up for fall camp on August 15, I am thankful for all your continued support of Gustie Football. I am also thankful to our staff for their continued passion and investment in the lives of our players. The short bios on each of our full-time coaches will give you a little insight on their past and present. In addition, our part-time staff have invested so much in the lives of our players. Most of our part-time staff are Gustie Alumni and serve our players on the field and as mentors. We competed strong in our 14 spring ball practice sessions that ended mid-May. The highlight of the spring was May 11 when we hosted a large group of talented high school juniors. The day began with our players, coaches, junior recruits, and families having a social followed by me sharing our program values. Recruits, players, and families sat in on our pre-practice position meetings and then participated in asking questions of our alumni panel who volunteered to share about their Gustavus experience and how Gustavus has prepared them for life after college. Big thanks to Tim Schwartz, Andy Traetow, Brad Krucke- berg, Brett Aamot, Lyle Opdahl, Brian Willie, Luke and Zack Martinez, David Gschneider, and Casey Decker for Zach Vine is in his fifth season on the Gustavus Adolphus staff in 2019 as the defensive line coach and strength and conditioning coordinator. Vine graduated from Gus- tavus in 2015, majoring in Health Fitness, and played for the Gustie football team for four seasons. During his time on the gridiron for the Gust- ies, Vine played in 25 games and started at offensive guard in all 10 games his senior year. During the 2014 season, Vine was a captain and was honored with the Lee Krough Award, MIAC Sportsmanship Award and the Gustavus Servant Leadership Award. A native of Lino Lakes, Minn. and 2011 graduate of Centennial High School, Zach is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Zach lives in St. Peter and is engaged to his fiance, Liz Strom `15, with the wedding planned in July. Lucas Kleinschrodt is in his fourth season on staff for the Gustavus Adolphus football team in 2019, and second season as the defensive coordinator. The previous season Kleinschrodt shared the position as the co-defensive coordinator. A native of Alden, Minnesota, Kleinschrodt graduated from Alden-Conger High School in 2010. From there, Lucas attended Gustavus where he graduated in 2013 with an undergraduate degree in Health Fitness. Kleinschrodt was a four-year letterwinner for the Gusties as a linebacker. He recorded 146 tackles in 38 career games at Gustavus, ranking fifth on his team with a career-high 42 tackles his senior season in 2013. He finished his career with three interceptions, two fumble recoveries, four pass break-ups and four tackles for loss. Lucas lives in Chaska with his wife Ali `13. spending time with our recruits. The day finished with families receiving a tour, watching practice, and eating lunch with our players and coaches. In addition, our players and coaches had an opportunity to listen to a few Gustie football greats as well. Peter Nyhus, Bob Swiggum, and Gordy Engel gave a great message to our players and shared of their experiences being a Gustie. The work that took place in the offseason was evident in our spring practices. We stayed healthy, demonstrated fo- cus, and looked strong on the field. Our returning players as well as our new players coming in for the fall look to build on that strong foundation. We return a large group from last year’s team and will add a talented group of first-year and transfer student athletes.
