The caregiver support group is for family members and caregivers whose loved ones are facing cancer.

This class uses proven musical methods to address the physical, emotional, cognitive and social needs of cancer survivors.

Yoga promotes physical and mental well-being, using a combination of movements, poses and breathing techniques to enhance relaxation, tone the body and improve circulation. People of all ages and abilities can enjoy yoga as part of their regular fitness routine.

Resources

As my year as President of the Board of Directors of GYNCA heads into the home stretch, I reflect on the many things that happened this year. Personally, it has been an up-and-down year as my cancer returned for a third time but I was able to make it through five months of chemotherapy and come out of it cancer free. I also decided to retire from Missouri State University in August. I have been there since 1992 and have worked without a break for the last 38 years so I am very much looking forward to a different lifestyle. I have many things I want to do and keeping involved with GYNCA is at the top of the list.

I am humbled by the many supporters of GYNCA and all you do. Whether it is a gift of time and/or talents and/or financial resources I cannot begin to tell you how important it is to the women we serve. Being diagnosed with cancer is a life-altering experience and knowing there are people who care helps so much. Many of the women we help have lost their jobs and health insurance due to having cancer. GYNCA helps many women with utility bills, gas, car repairs and rent and this support can help them concentrate on getting better.

You may or may not have someone in your life that has experienced cancer. If you have, you know it is a family or a friendship disease. The person with cancer is not the only one affected. In addition to providing financial help GYNCA provides one-on-one mentoring and support group meetings. The friendships found through GYNCA for those with and without cancer are life-long and treasured.

There are not enough words to thank all GYNCA friends. We cannot do our work without you and I thank you for your ongoing support.

Clinical trials are a BIG DEAL in the fight to find cures for all cancers.

Cancer Research for the Ozarks started with Mercy & CoxHealth; it now includes hospitals and health systems in Joplin, Bolivar, Branson, Rolla and more. The CCOP (Community Clinical Oncology Program) is designed to provide access to more current and innovative treatment options through NCI (National Cancer Institute)-approved cancer research trials to community oncologists and their patients. For many cancer patients throughout the Ozarks region, being a part of a CRO research trial in the past has saved their lives, enhanced their quality of life, provided additional support or extended life in a meaningful

way. Because of CRO, most patients do not need to travel far and to other states to participate in clinical trials. CRO recently announced that Jay Carlson, MD (Mercy Women’s Oncology) has accepted the position of Principal Investigator for Cancer Research for the Ozarks and Dr. Al Bonebrake (CoxHealth’s Ferrell Duncan Clinic Women’s Oncology) has accepted the position of Associate Principal Investigator. While they are both extremely busy with their respective hospital practices, Drs. Bonebrake and Carlson feel very strongly about research and their new opportunity to work with CRO. This is great news and we applaud and congratulate CRO, Dr. Jay Carlson and Dr. Al Bonebrake!

Support Group Meetings – 2013(May thru September)

Unless otherwise noted, all meetings are held at The Library Center, 4653 S Campbell, Springfield on the 3rd Thursday monthly in Auditorium or other designated meeting room. Social hour at 6:00 pm. Program at 6:30 pm.Please note updated weather/GYNCA meeting policy: If either Springfield or Greene County (or both) is under any type of National Weather Service advisory, watch or warning, i.e. snow, tornado, flash flood, etc., support group meetings will be cancelled. This includes the 8-hour time period prior to and immediately after a meeting is set to take place. Also, if Springfield Public Schools are cancelled, GYNCA offices will be closed and no meetings will be held.

(Or, as Ricky says, “Lucy, you’ve got some ‘splaining to do!) Come laugh with the rest of us … laughter is good for the soul!

June 20 - Picnic In The Park

SPECIAL LOCATION – Springfield Lake Boathouse & Marina 5324 South Kissick Avenue, Springfield (417) 891-1550. Fun and games for our survivors, kids, grandkids, families and caregivers! Hearts on Fire BBQ will be serving BBQ sandwiches, pitbeans, potato salad OR cold slaw, so we need to know how many are coming! July 18 - Hospice and Palliative Care

The ever-evolving world of Hospice and Palliative Care, and to help us better understand a subject we’re often afraid to address, we look forward to welcoming Pat A. Price, Director-Mercy Hospice. This might also be a good meeting to bring caregivers and family members along … some-times their questions are different than the patient’s.

August 15 - Evening of Pampering!

This is your evening, ladies! We already have massage therapists lined up and will be bringing in others to do nails, hand massage, aroma therapy, etc. to help you look and feel better. One of our favorite meetings, so don’t miss it!

September 19 - Physician’s Panel!

Bring your pressing questions for Dr. Al Bonebrake, Dr. Jay Carlson and others! Now that both Dr.’s Carlson and Bonebrake are principal investiga-tors for Cancer Research of the Ozarks, they have the latest information on clinical trails and cancer research, too. Don’t miss it!

Call them whatever you prefer --- caregivers, family or village people --- they all play vital roles in the life of patients battling cancer.

Purposely included in GYNCA’s mission statement, “GYN Cancers Alliance provides education, resources and support to local women and caregivers a!ected by gynecologic cancers.” Unfortunately it is natural to gravitate to the immediate needs of the patient since we hear from her more often. In recent weeks though, we are learning that caregivers are also su!ering, grieving and feeling helpless --- often in silence --- as they work hard to hide their own fears while maintaining a staunch front of hope and determi-nation.

In the most subtle and surprising ways, we’ve been reminded that GYNCA’s presence for patients, caregivers and family members are equally important both during treatment and even afterwards if a client loses her battle against cancer. GYNCA loses a good friend and Woman of Courage; the families lose a wife, mother, daughter, life partner, grandma, aunt, sister or lifelong friend. As women battle physically and emotionally, caregivers also battle their personal unknowns while internalizing pain, fear, anxiety, loss, loneliness and helplessness.

Caregivers , Family & Village PeopleI would encourage patients and caregivers alike to visit the Blog of our friend, a Woman of Courage and ovarian cancer "ghter, Charlotte Hopper, “Split Down the Middle.” ckhopper.blogspot.com. Charlotte speaks candidly about her personal "ght and her lack of identity after her last chemo treatment. From husband Randy’s perspective, he has learned, “I can’t be the sole protector for my ovarian patient. I don’t have to be the perfect player on this team, but I need to be the perfect teammate. That means let the star be the star. I will mess up. I will say the wrong thing. But I won’t be afraid to be a man in a women’s world... I will lay my inadequacies on the table for other men to see, and I will never, ever turn my back on my teal family.” And to daughter, Morgan, recently accepted into Missouri Southern State University’s Honors Program, who ful"lled an autobiographi-cal essay application requirement that addressed “from the end of her life looking back over everything she had accomplished,” and revealing how her mother’s cancer diagnosis changed her life forever.

I’m guessing that the writings of Charlotte, Randy and Morgan re#ect the fears, emotions, realities and helplessness and hopefulness of all survivors, caregivers, family, friends and people in your Village. We thank the Hoppers for putting into words what so many others are unable to verbally express themselves.
