Greek Week is a fun and exciting time when Cal Poly’s Greek community squares off for a week of friendly competition including sporting events, fundraising, and lip sync. The Greek community is composed of Panhellenic sororities, IFC Fraternities, and United Fraternity and Sorority Counsil (culturally based Greek houses). This year we were named “Team Red” aka “team sexy.” Theta was paired up with some amazing and enthusiastic fraternity partners: Theta Chi, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Alpha Epsilon Pi, and Gamma Zeta Alpha. We kicked off Greek Week with Beach Day at Pismo Beach. Beach Day’s events were: obstacle courses, limbo, tug-o- war, and beach volleyball. We all had so much fun soaking up the sun and cheering on our sporty sisters! The rest of the week’s sporting events included: dodgeball, basketball, soccer and flag football. For those of us less athleticly inclined, there were other ways to get involved in Greek Week that did not require as much muscle. Other competitive events included donating blood to the Blood Bank, attending a guest speaker at the Performing Arts Center, collecting toiletries to donate to the North County Women’s Shelter and a doughnut eating contest. Greek Week Events Cont...

the eight Greek Week teams was also assigned to a middle school in San Luis Obispo county. Each team made a presentation to the young students at a school assembly about the importance of attending college. The grand finale of Greek Week was lip-sync. Each team puts on a lip sync performance, an eight minute comedic skit complete with elaborate dance numbers, a storyline, and of course, plenty of lip syncing. Our lip sync performance was loosly based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory but with a modern twist. Although Team Red as a whole did not win Greek Week, Kappa Alpha Theta as an individual house won first place out of all the Panhellenic sororities by over 400 points! Greek Week is just as much about philanthropy as it is about competition. Through fundraising and the cost of admission to lipsync, the Greek community raised $3,5000 for the Lucia del Mar School District. Congratualtions girls on all your hard work!

This May, we hosted a “Sister Twister,” a sisterhood activitiy that we share with another sorority at our main house. We loved having the ladies of Tri- Delta and Sigma Omega Nu over to play board games and eat yummy pizza. Although it would have been fitting, we did not play Twister but rather more popular board games like “Apples to Apples” and “Taboo.” Those in attendance had a great time mingling and trying our hand at the fun games. Sister Twisters are an excellent way to meet other Greeks in different houses!

Parents Day weekend this year was a huge success. We loved hosting our parents for the weekend, showing them the sorority house, introducing them to our friends, and what Theta is really all about! The weekend festivities included dessert and a slideshow Friday night, a barbeque and games at Meadow Park Saturday afternoon, and a Mother’s Day brunch on Sunday morning. Despite the mischevious antics of the fraternity next-door (they piled all the patio furniture for over 100 guests on our roof), the event ran smoothly and everyone had a great time. Sophomore Alumnae Relations Chairman, Jenna Emadzadeh (pictured to the right with her mother) who planned the weekend, pulled off the event fabulously!

“Senior dinners with my the best senior class ever, being able to

bond and laugh with my girls was a great memory I will always

cherish” -Dani Murphy     "One of my favorite Theta memories

was having over a dozen of my sisters come all the way to Vegas to celebrate

my 21st birthday!" -Cambrie Marks

“Blasting music and having random dance parties in the

parking lot in the rain.” -Natalie Levenson

“My favorite memory was at formal this year reading all the letters from younger members that I have made

an impact on and realizing that it was all worth it. The one thing in

common with all of the letters was that I was friends with women of all classes all the way through to the end of my senior year. This showed me

that it is never too late to get involved in Theta and really make an impact

on people's lives.” -Megan Juskalian

“My most memorable moment in Theta was Big/Little revealing. All

week long, my big, Caitlin convinced me that she was not taking a little and

that I definitely was her little if she was. Since revealing, she has become

a best friend, support system, and constant source of love and

encouragement that without Theta I would have had.”

- Jackie Lauver

We asked Theta Seniors, “What’s your Favorite Theta Memory?”

Here is what they had to say...

“My favorite memory in Theta has been all the great times I spent with

my two littles and all the great friends I've made.”

-Amanda Flynn

“Probably my favorite memory was initiating 50 amazing new Thetas into our house this Fall. Having the honor

of welcoming these women and sharing our secrets and ritual was one

of my best experiences yet as a Theta.”

-Addie Virta

“On Spring break my Theta ladies and I went to Las Vegas. Being

obsessed with LMFAO we loved the quote, "I'm a human not a sandwich". We then preceeded to describe which

type of sandwiches we would be. Kelsey Rugani was a spam

sandwich...” -Taylor Roschen

“My favorite memory was living on property--best time I ever had.

Particularly when Laura Lochner and I got thrown in AGR’s pool after wine fest. Also, you can't really experience

living on property without Theta Bobsledding.”

-Amy Scott

"I probably have hundreds of fond memories throughout my four years

in the Theta.  Although I have a hard time choosing just one, one memory that will always stick with me was the support my sisters gave me after going through a very difficult break-up.  For

nearly a month, I received notes of encouragement, CDs filled with

inspirational songs, and calls telling me come outside to pick up a pint of Ben & Jerry's.  These sisters restored

my shattered self-confidence and helped me grow into an independent

woman.  I now know I can tackle whatever the future throws at me, as

long as I have their support." -Kami Tiano

“Sunday Fundays with all of my senior ladies.”

-Kat Richards

“Theta love is like a booger. You keep picking at it until you get it, then

wonder what to do with it.” -Leilani Wu
