Step 1 - Introducing the Henri Rousseau Slideshow Guide BEGIN READING HERE

MOTIVATION Would you like to take a walk through a jungle today? Do you think it will be exciting? What might we find in the jungle? (ANSWERS WILL VARY) Let’s get ready for our journey. We’ll put on our safari hats (PANTOMIME) and our hiking boots, and we better not forget our cameras! Help me make some of the sounds we will hear in the jungle as we walk along. The sound of our feet walking (OPEN HANDS SLAPPING LAP), our feet running (FASTER SLAPPING), the wind in the many trees (HANDS BRUSHING EACH OTHER), raindrops hitting the leaves (SOFT SNAPPING OF FINGERS), lightning crashing overhead (QUICK SHARP CLAP OF HANDS). You are good at jungle sounds!! Now that we’re ready for our journey, I will lead us through the jungle as you make the sounds we just practiced. Let’s review the sounds quickly: walking, running, wind, rain, lightning. When you hear any of those words that go with sounds, that is your cue to make the right jungle sound. Let’s start our exciting jungle journey!

DEVELOPMENT As we slowly walk into the jungle, we wonder what adventures we will have. As we walk further into the thick jungle, it’s getting darker and darker, and we can’t see the sun anymore. What was that sound? We start to run, as we quickly peer around to see if we are alone. It gets darker still, and raindrops slowly hit the trees. Now the wind is blowing harder and makes the rain even louder. Are we caught in the middle of a big storm? How bad will it get? Will the animals in the jungle become frightened and come out in the storm? And what kind of animals might we meet? Oh, lightning just lit up the sky, and the rain is starting to come down harder and harder. Oh! I hear something! I hope it’s not a wild animal!

1. STORM IN THE JUNGLE What animal do you see? Would you be afraid if you were actually there? (YES) What do you see that shows a violent storm? (WIND, LIGHTNING, RAIN) Do you think it’s thundering, too? (YES) The wind is whipping the rain through the tropical jungle. The tiger is running in wild panic as the lightning and thunder frighten him. What makes the tiger look dangerous? (SNARLING TEETH, READY TO POUNCE, HIDING) Let’s meet the artist who painted this exciting jungle picture. Do you think he lived in or near a jungle? I would like to introduce our master artist, Henri Rousseau.

2. PORTRAIT LANDSCAPE What identifies him as an artist if I hadn’t told you? (PALETTE, BRUSH, HAT) As you can see, Henri was very proud to be an artist! Did he place himself in the jungle? (NO) Where is he? (NEAR A CITY, BOAT) If you look very closely, you will see a tower in the background that is very famous. That is called the Eiffel Tower, and it is a famous landmark in the city of Paris, France. This is where Henri lived. Do you think he was anywhere near a dark and dangerous jungle? (NO) Do you think he visited a jungle to know what it was like? (YES AND NO) It might surprise you to know that Henri never traveled to a jungle at all. Can you imagine how he knew how to paint it? (TAKE SEVERAL RESPONSES) Let’s look back at Storm in the Jungle now.

3. STORM IN THE JUNGLE Raise your hand if you see many exotic plants. (YES) Where would Henri see such plants in a big city? Henri found the many ideas for these plants in the botanical gardens in Paris. He made many trips there to study the tropical plants. He said, “When I step into the garden and see the plants from far-off lands, it seems to me that I am in a dream.” Would you like that dream like Henri did? He excitedly collected every possible kind of leaf he could find in order to draw and paint them. Quickly guess how many colors of green you see. Show me the guess with your number of silent fingers. There are more than 50 values of green in this painting! Point to a very dark value of green. (TREE, FOREGROUND PLANT) Now point to a very light value of green. (FOREGROUND GRASSES, LEAVES ON TREE) Excellent! You will be using many values of green in your art activity. Would there be wild animals in the Paris botanical gardens, too, for Henri to draw? (NO) Actually, Henri never saw a real tiger! He had a beautiful animal book from a department store that he studied. In that book were tigers, and ---

4. THE DREAM: DETAIL

What animals do you see? (LIONS) Can you make a face like these lions? (WIDE EYES, STARING) Do these lions look like they are afraid or are they ready to attack? (AFRAID) How does Henri paint them differently from the tiger to show you they are not attacking? (NO TEETH, HIDING, SURPRISED) Do you see many values of green in this painting? (YES) Besides leaves, what else is growing here? (FLOWERS) Would Henri have seen exotic flowers at the Paris gardens? (YES) Do you see many values of brown on the lions? (YES) I want you to picture Henri at work on this painting. Do you think he worked inside or outside? He was known to have worked in his studio seven days a week from morning till night. He always began at the top of his canvas and slowly and carefully worked his way down to the bottom. He worked with only one color at a time. Guess with what color he usually started. (GREEN) He would fill in all those areas where he wished to have green. Only then would he change colors. He would put the animals in last of all. Let’s see what animal Henri shows us next. What animals could be called the clowns of the jungle? (TAKE SEVERAL ANSWERS) Let’s see if you were right!

Click Next To Change Slide 5. EXOTIC LANDSCAPE Who are the clowns? (MONKEYS) Do you like to watch monkeys clowning around at the zoo? (YES) As you look at Rousseau’s monkeys, imagine, as he did, hearing their screeching and chattering. With what are they playing? (ORANGES) Are they enjoying their game? (YES) Raise your hand if you see many interesting plants and trees surrounding the monkeys. (YES) Let’s look closely at the shapes of the leaves and flowers. Point to heart-shaped leaves. (TREE ON RIGHT) Can you find and point to a flower petal shape that looks similar to an angel? (WHITE FLOWER ON RIGHT) Now find long, pointed shapes. (BOTTOM FOREGROUND) Excellent! Henri, like you, looked so carefully at each shape. He noticed the tiniest details. He frequently used picture postcards from far away lands as models for his paintings. As he painted, he dreamed of these foreign lands, but he himself, the dreamer, never left France. Let’s see what Henri dreamed in this next unusual painting. Will there be an animal in his dream?

Does this look like something in a dream? (YES) It is one of Henri’s largest and most unusual paintings! Does the lion look calm or dangerous? (CALM) Does this painting make you feel noisy or quiet? (QUIET) Point to what Henri is describing in a note he wrote when he was trying to sell this painting. “A wandering music player sleeps in deep exhaustion, her jug beside her (a pitcher of drinking water). A lion happens to pass that

7. TROPICAL LANDSCAPE WITH MONKEYS

Which is it, dreamlike or realistic? (REALISTIC) Count how many monkeys you can find. Look carefully; some might be hiding from you! How many did you find? Show me with your fingers. (5) Show me next how many different kinds of monkeys there are. (3) Point to the monkey who is having the most fun! Now search for something else. There is something with a long tongue, that doesn’t have arms or legs. Can you find it and point to it? (LEFT, FOREGROUND) Yes, it’s a snake! Do you think there might be many kinds of snakes in a jungle? (YES) When you do your artwork, you will get to draw and color a snake in your jungle picture, just like Henri Rousseau did in this painting.

I hope you have enjoyed your visit to the jungle and dreams of Henri Rousseau. What was your favorite jungle animal -- the tiger, lion or monkeys? Show me with a silent pose: a snarling tiger (PANTOMIME ALL), a calm staring lion, or a monkey throwing an orange. I know you will enjoy creating a jungle scene, just as much as Henri Rousseau did!

Step 2 - Learning From: Henri Rousseau

Henri Rousseau loved to paint animals in the jungle. Sometimes, the animals hid behind the tall jungle grass.

Grass grows to many different heights and thicknesses.

Draw many grass “blades” below, filling up the box.

Animal shapes

1.Make a slow wavy line 2.Add the same kind of line, three fingers wide.

ORIENTATION [3 minutes] Our master artist Rousseau lived in what country? (FRANCE) Remember the walk through the jungle during the assembly? We will continue that walk today. Let’s think about shapes and color values that we might see in Rousseau’s jungle. Did Henri Rousseau always paint realistically? (NO) What else did he use to inspire his art? (DREAMS, MAGAZINES, BOOKS) Let’s use our imagination to create a jungle composition.

DEMONSTRATION AND ACTIVITY Have the students repeat each step immediately with their materials: ORGANIZE YOUR WORK AREA [3 minutes] 1.Put your paper towel, paintbrush, water cup, and watercolor crayons in a corner of your desk. 2.Place your brown paper, kelly green paper, and lime green paper on your desk. 3.Take your completed Learning Packet out of your desk. 4.Put pencil, scissors, glue, black crayon, and artist profile slip to the other corner of your desk.

DRAWING THE SNAKE [10 minutes] 1.Fold the lime green paper in half lengthwise. Cut on the fold into two pieces. Use one piece for the snake and save the other piece for the jungle grass/leaves below.

2.Using one piece of the lime green paper, and the black crayon, draw a snake. In one corner, draw the head by making a large oval or diamond shape. It should be at least three fingers wide. Continue to the opposite corner, completing the body, two to three fingers wide. Use slow, large, curvy lines. Both the top and bottom curves should be the same, like curved railroad tracks. Use heavy pressure with the crayon, as this will create a dam for the water color. Use the black crayon to draw two eyes.

3.Use the black crayon to add pattern to the snake’s body. Examples:

4.With your warm-color watercolor crayons (yellow, orange, red), fill in your patterns.

5.Dip your paintbrush in water and lightly brush dripping water off on the side of the water cup. Using just THE TIP of the paintbrush, paint with water over the warm-colored parts of the snake. Stay within the crayon lines. Set aside to dry. 6.Water cups and brushes should be collected.

MOUNTING THE ARTIST PROFILE SLIP [2 minutes] (Provided profile slips for each artist give a brief description of the artist, the technique, and the media used in the art activity. They should be mounted on the back of each art project.) 1.Write your name on the front of the artist profile slip. 2.Using glue, mount the profile slip on the back of the square brown construction paper. Encourage students to discuss their artwork at home using this artist slip of information. DRAWING, COLORING, AND CUTTING OUT JUNGLE GRASS/LEAVES [10 minutes] 1.Place kelly green paper horizontally on your desk. Using a cool watercolor crayon, draw a large, zigzag line from corner to corner. Note: The line should stop (one finger’s width) before the top and bottom edges of the paper to keep piece continuous. Line may be straight or “wavy.”

One finger’s width

One finger’s width

2.Now color the grass/leaves with your watercolor crayons. 3.Repeat the process with the smaller lime green rectangle which was left over from the paper cut in half for the snake. With the smaller rectangle, the grass/leaf points end up closer to the top and bottom edges of the paper. Color this piece also. 4.Cutting on the zigzag line, cut the kelly green grass/leaf paper in half. Try to keep the piece continuous for easier gluing. You should have two pieces of kelly green grass/leaves. 5.Cut the smaller lime green grass/leaf paper in half cutting on the zigzag line. You should have two small pieces of lime green grass/leaves.

PREPARING THE BACKGROUND [13 minutes] 1.“Warm” the brown paper by pressing (crumpling) the paper gently between your hands to give it texture. 2.Smooth out brown paper and center it on the desk. 3.Run a bead of glue across the top of the brown square. Attach one of the darker kelly green grass/leaf cutouts. Glue only the top, having the “leaves” hang down. 4. 5. 6. 4.Run a bead of glue across the bottom of the paper and do the same with the other dark kelly green “grass,” gluing down only the straight edge. 5.Place the lime green grass/leaves on top of, over, behind, or under the dark green grass/leaves. The grass/leaves may be placed at the top or bottom, both, or neither. After deciding where you want to place a lime green grass/leaf piece, pick it up and run a line of glue along its straight edge. Place it down where you have chosen it to go. 6.Use your fingers to “curl” and shape the grass/leaves so they stand away from the background. Set aside. PLACING THE SNAKE [5 minutes] 1.Carefully cut out the snake. Place the scraps to the side. Place the snake in the “jungle” to see where you like it best. 2.Turn the snake over and place one dot of glue behind the head and one near the tail. 3.Arrange the snake “behind” the grass and leaves. 4.Place your index fingers over the glue dots and push the tail toward the head so that the body comes off of the paper and the snake has dimension. Hold glue points for a count of 20. CONCLUSION Rousseau would be so pleased with your jungle scenes. He would love to go walking through this lush jungle and see the beautiful, slithery snakes!
