Shock Tool
Reduces Bit Bounce and Increases Rate of Penetration
and Bit Life Under the Toughest Drilling Conditions
Downhole vibration can severely limit the life of adrill bit in hard rock formations, slowing the ROP (rate of
penetration). Sperry Drilling Services shock toolincorporates the best features of all competitive shock tools, reducing weight-on-bit variation and maximizing reservoir
deliverability. By using steel disc springs and hydraulicpump open force during drilling, the tool runs partially
open, with the spring enabling the tool to extend orcompress, as required, to keep the bit on bottom.
The shock tool is run next to the bit to keep the oscillatingmass to a minimum, allowing the shock-absorbing element
to effectively absorb accelerations and keep the bit onbottom. Within normal drilling parameters, the tool is not
limited with respect to drilling weight, torque, type of
drilling fluid, flow rate, pressure drops and temperature.By increasing the life of the bit and thereby reducing thenumber of round trips, the shock tool can effectively reducenonproductive time.
Shock Tool Functional Features
Effective vibration dampening
Reduced bit bounce
Extended bit life by impact load reduction
Increased ROP
Decreased damaging cyclic stresses in BHA(bottomhole assembly) components
Shock Tool Design Features
Balanced for hydrostatic pressures
Temperature compensated using a balance piston
Sprung in both directions to handle high pumpopen forces
Free vertical movement and long life of splines throughminimum friction drive
Can be run in holes up to 400F (204C)
Seal Kit Options
The shock tool may be used with standard seals up to
250F (121C) and with optional seals up to 400F (204C).
