from the start ...

Parents and children have treasured our toys as trusty companions for 75 years. We want them to always be able to trust HABA in the future too, so that’s why we’re always adapting our toys to meet the most up-to-date regulations and guidelines. We are also continually optimising technology and our production processes.

Design and quality “Made in Germany”

“What do your children‘s inventors actually do?” That’s a question we often get asked at HABA. The answer is simple - they think and tinker, design and discard, draw sketches and build models and they do all that with a good dose of creativity and a keen sense of what children need.

But they’re not alone; instead they’re in constant contact with construction and quality specialists - which materials are safe for children? How big do the balls have to be?

Every year, our inventors develop around 500 new games and toys for children. With HABA, every-thing is “Made in Germany” from the idea right through to the prototype!

We use woods from sustainable forestry in German forests.

Children are the best thing we have and nature is the most valuable gift we can give them: with natural toys and games made from home-grown wood.

That is why we use wood from sustaina-ble forestry in German forests and why HABA has carried the PEFC seal, which stands for sustainable and responsible forestry, since 2010. This will preserve our forests for future generations - as a livelihood, a place of work and some-where to relax and have fun.

We follow a basic principle at HABA - each toy is only as safe as its materials! So wood, paints and fabrics are continually checked and improved. Just like our finished toys, our raw materials correspond to all safety standards and laws:

• All paints are water-based and solvent-free. For decades, we have been working together with German supply partners to only use first-class stains, varnishes and print colors.

• Materials for toys that we don’t produce in Bad Rodach are checked and monitored in Germany in their unproces-sed form (e.g. paints in liquid form).

ProductionOur Moby clutching toy first glimpses the light of day in Bad Rodach, as shown in the image on the right. Just this toy? No, building blocks and game pieces too - nearly all the wooden pieces that HABA offers; just like we have for the past 70 years. Recently we expanded production to a wide range of countries. Why?

In order to provide a vast array of products, including textiles, and more impor-tantly to be able to offer you the highest-quality at an acceptable price. Last but not least, this also allows us to secure jobs in sales, advertising and distributi-on.

Naturally, our global manufacturers are carefully selected. We regularly visit pro-duction sites and check quality. HABA products that are made from fabric or plastic are produced by manufacturers that we inspect according to strict criteria, for example according to social standards (working hours, conditions and child labour). These manufacturers have been certified by various bodies, including ICTI*.

You can rely on HABA even when it doesn’t say “Made in Germany” on the packaging.

The International Council of Toy Industries (ICTI) promotes ethical and safe practises in toy production. Its members are obligated to fair and legal production conditi-ons that are set forth in the association‘s code of behaviour.

On the one hand, we check our toys for chemical subs-tances, e.g. for azo dyes, softeners or to see if they contain or leach heavy metals.

On the other hand, we check the mechanical safety of all toys by intentionally destroying them so that we can identify any manufacturing defects.

We carry out the following tests:- Submersion tests for testing the resistance of all indi vidual parts with subsequent tensile test

- Impact and fall tests

- Tests for saliva and sweat-proofness

We also use special stencils to check whether small parts can be swallowed by children under three years, and we checkthe string lengths of pull-along animals etc.

Tests

Splashing for safety - the sub-mersion test

Enjoy your flight - flower pixies during the fall test

Do individual parts stand up to the tensile test?

Before our flower pixies set off on their journey to you, they are put through their paces, just like all HABA toys. The tests exceed legal requirements - and they are particularly strict for toys!

The TÜV Rheinland group, which includes the Landesgewerbe-anstalt Bayern (LGA) in Nuremberg, continually tests both our mate-rials and the finished toys. The independent testing institute with years of experience checks the following standards and laws, among others:

• European Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC

• European standard for the safety of toys EN 71

• American standard ASTM Standard Consumer Safety Specification on Toy Safety (F 963)

For baby toys we also check whether they fulfil the requirements of the GS mark. GS stands for “Geprüfte Sicherheit” or “tested safety” and means that the products are voluntarily and continually tested by the manufacturer.

When we test toys, we place a great deal of emphasis on their safety. But why isn’t every grab toy tested? Logically, because they won’t survive our “acid test”! A sampling of each toy production lot is tested and destroyed during the tests; therefore 100% checks are not possible.

Toy manufacturers have to fulfil hundreds of standards and laws. Imagine if you had to meet these guidelines for your children in everyday life - the stick would be too long, the gravel to small...

Things that are obvious in everyday life also stand true for toys. The “whole picture“ is required for safety - laws do not replace cautious and attentive use. No test logos or regulations can replace a guardian‘s alertness! For example, please note the information on recommen-ded ages: a safe toy for a child over three years can still be unsafe for a younger one.

You can rely on the experience of our staff. To the best of their knowledge, the assemblers carefully scrutinize the quality of each individual part, and they dispose of any parts that have even the slightest defects.

Extremely interes-ting, but after cur-rent directives not safe for children: a snail shell
