HABERDASHERS’ASKE’S FEDERATIONTHREE SCHOOLS ONE VISION

Welcome to the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation. Our three Academies provide an education for children aged 3 – 18 in South London. We have been educating young people in this part of

London since 1876 and throughout that time our approach has been epitomised by high standards and academic excellence, a tradition that continues today. Our values of aspiration and achievement, personal responsibility, self-discipline and mutual respect are evident in all our work and result in young people who develop and grow as independent, resourceful and resilient individuals.

Our commitment is that, working in partnership with you, we can ensure your child gets the best possible start in life. All children and young people who attend our schools have the opportunity to gain academic qualifications to equip them well for the next stage of their life, but we provide so much more than that. Our vision is that by the time young people leave us they will have experienced a whole range of opportunities that not only build their mind, but also build their character. As a result they are fully prepared to be successful in their adult lives as workers, as parents and as partners.

Adrian Percival – Chief Executive

CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S WELCOME

Hatcham College is a specialist music and ICT College, educating children from nursery to sixth form through the use of excellent, innovative, personalised learning and specialist teaching. Exceptional support is provided to enable all children to achieve their full potential. Haberdashers’ Aske’s tradition is an integral part of every child’s lifelong learning at Hatcham College. Our young people enjoy their time at the College and this is reflected in their behaviour and attitude towards their learning and to the community as a whole. Hatcham College is hugely popular with parents and children and brings stability and self-esteem to all involved.

Hatcham College provides a safe, rigorous and challenging learning environment for pupils of all abilities and backgrounds to develop as well-adjusted young adults. Our expectations are extremely high in terms of pupil achievement, behaviour and uniform and we insist that pupils behave respectfully toward others and their environment.

I believe that Hatcham has a great deal to offer your child and I hope that you agree. I look forward to meeting you and working with you over the coming years in ensuring the very best for your child.

The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation is a Federation of three all-through schools each at the heart of its community that share a vision for the education of children and young people. Our vision is built from our values of aspiration and achievement, personal responsibility, self-discipline and mutual respect. We are forward-looking and value innovation, but always within the context of our long tradition of providing excellent education. Based upon these values, we aim to ensure all the children and young people who come to our schools:

• Are happy and safe at school and are able to learn successfully within a supportive environment.

• Are able to achieve their full potential personally, academically and socially.

• Develop and grow as independent, resourceful and resilient individuals.

• Are equipped with the skills, qualifications and love of learning they will need to be successful in the world they will join as adults.

We will achieve these aims by providing a safe environment where all children and young people can succeed and through:

• Provision of a curriculum that is stretching, relevant and provides each student with the opportunity to excel.

• High expectations of every member of our community.

• Excellent teaching, leading to the highest standards of academic excellence.

• The best standards of behaviour based upon our values of mutual respect, self-discipline and self-confidence.

• A respect for tradition that embraces innovation and challenge.

THE COLLEGE OFFERS ALL CHILDREN THE CHANCE TO ACHIEVE THEIR FULL POTENTIAL.

yEAr 7

It is important to us that our year 7 students feel happy and safe and are able to learn within a supportive environment.

The College offers, wherever possible, single-sex teaching in years 7 – 11. It is the view of the Federation that students in the secondary phase learn more effectively in single-sex classes. However, the benefits of a co-educational community are recognised and all house, enrichment and extra-curricular activities are co-educational. The achievement of boys and girls is equally matched and we aim to satisfy the aspirations and goals of all our students.

The best standards of behaviour are expected based on our values of mutual respect, self-discipline and self-confidence; and these high standards encourage respect for tradition while embracing innovation by joining up learning and opening up the world.

We see parents as partners in the education of their children and will keep them informed of their child’s progress regularly at each stage of their education.

OUR STUDENTS DEVELOP AND GROW INTO INDEPENDENT, RESOURCEFUL AND RESILIENT INDIVIDUALS.

The curriculum throughout the all-through school at Haberdashers’ Aske’s Hatcham College is accessible, inclusive, challenging and flexible. It provides the opportunity for every student to excel, by instilling high expectations of every member of our community, while meeting the needs of the individual learner.

KEY STAGE 3 (KS3)

Students follow a traditional three-year curriculum in KS3. Setting, based largely on students’ KS2 SATS results is initially used in year 7 for mathematics, English and science, whilst other year 7 groups are of mixed ability. Specific learning difficulties are identified and other special needs addressed, including those of more able students. Nurture groups are a feature of our school, enabling the most challenged students to develop and attain academic success alongside their peers.

All students learn French, German or Spanish from year 7 to year 9. In year 8 the more able students will be able to study a second foreign language: French, German, Spanish, Mandarin or Latin.

Wherever setting operates there is regular monitoring to ensure that students are following a programme appropriate to their learning needs.

KEY STAGE 4 (KS4)

In addition to the core subjects of English, mathematics, physical education and sciences, KS4 options are chosen. These are designed to provide a GCSE programme whereby the core is enriched by a choice of other subjects. We offer excellent advice to all students to determine the most appropriate GCSE options for them.

The work-related curriculum, which involves careers education, enterprise education and work experience, prepares students for the world of work.

REPORTING AND ASSESSMENT

At all stages, students’ progress is regularly assessed and reported to parents. On-going assessment is essential in developing a curriculum to suit the needs of all our students.

Every student benefits from the music specialism as staff work tirelessly to provide great opportunities both within the classroom and in enrichment activities. Our students are excellent ambassadors and have recently represented the College by performing in the London Symphony Orchestra, London Schools Symphony Orchestra, the London Youth Wind Band, an Independent Film Company, Midsummer Opera and the Choir of the Year competition.

There are many events involving Hatcham musicians held throughout an academic year. Students have performed in College and across London, bringing their talent to Southwark Cathedral, St John’s Smith Square, Haberdashers’ Hall, Queen Elizabeth’s Hall and the Royal Festival Hall.

‘The Stage’, the newspaper for the Arts has reviewed the standard of performances at Hatcham as, “astonishing”. There is much to celebrate in the quality of music provision and realisation at Hatcham College and we will continue to nurture the outstanding talents of our students.

HATCHAM COLLEGE, A SPECIALIST MUSIC COLLEGE, IS A HAPPY, VIBRANT LEARNING COMMUNITY,

WITH A POSITIVE APPROACH TO LEARNING WHICH IS ENCOURAGED BY OUR DEDICATED STAFF.

Career Guidance and Career Exploration are integral to a student’s development and growth at Haberdashers’ Aske’s Hatcham College and serve as preparation for our students’ transition to adulthood. The presence of career-related activities provide the connection between learning and earning, equipping our students with the knowledge, skills and attributes needed to enter and thrive in the working world.

Work experience and educational visits are just two of the many ways in which the College liaises with business and industry to show the link between learning and earning. Our students also have the opportunity to attend career fairs, industry talks, insight days, career workshops and industry visits. We also offer an employability day in KS4 and an employability week in KS5, both career-related of which are led by industry experts, through our PSHCE provision. Some of our partners include Lewisham Education Business Partnership and HAYS staff.

The College provides an extensive range of educational opportunities outside of the normal schedule of lessons. These are offered across all key stages and can take the form of after-school clubs and activities, house events, local and worldwide trips, sports events, music and drama productions and residential visits, including activities such as the Duke of Edinburgh scheme.

Enrichment gives breadth and the opportunity for cross-curricular work within the College and provides a perfect opportunity for our older pupils to work with the primary children. The enrichment programme is a key element of our all-through curriculum. All pupils are expected to involve themselves fully in these additional activities.
