About the College
Haldia is a famous river-port town situated on the banks of the
Hooghly River. It is an expanding industrial belt in eastern India.
Haldia Government College was established in 1988 by the state
government in the erstwhile Midnapore district to promote
education in the region. At present it belongs to the district of Purba
Medinipur and is the first government college to be established
there. The Department of Higher Education, Government of West
Bengal, realizing the educational needs of this rapidly growing town
and its adjoining areas, decided to establish the second government
college in the erstwhile district of Medinipur in 1984. As a result
Haldia Government College was set up. Under the affiliation of
Vidyasagar University, the college came into being in 1988 and was
inaugurated by the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Shri Jyoti
Basu, on 20th November. Since then it is continuously catering to
students’ need of higher education. Situated on the busy four-lane
National Highway no. 41 the college is also well connected by the
South-Eastern Railways.
A co-educational institute, the college offers degree courses in Arts
and Scienceand offers different undergraduate and postgraduate
degree courses to approximately 2000 students every year.In 2015
two postgraduate courses were introduced in the college in the
departments of Geography and Chemistry respectively.
Haldia Government College also boasts of a flourishing vocational
course on Travel and Tourism Management and a busy centre of
Netaji Subhas Open University. The college offers entry-in-service
coaching to WBCS aspirants, coaching classes for School Service
Commission aspirants as well as UGC sponsored Remedial classes
for SC/ ST/ OBC/ students belonging to minority communities and
economically backward groups. It has a UGCsponsored Career
Counselling cell that organizes counselling workshops for students,
and the NSS cadres of the college participate actively in improving
the neighborhood of the college. NCC activities have also begun in
the college recently. The college has been accredited by the National
Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) during the tenth
plan and has been assessed with a Grade “B” (70-75%). A bustling
hub of academic as well as other corporate student-activities, this
proud feather in the cap of Haldia, the industrial port-town of West
Bengal, crossed its 25th year in November 2012.
