VADA MINUTES – CONFERENCE CALL MEETING 10/21/20

The meeting was called to order at 8:01pm.
Anne Draine made the motion to accept the minutes from the last meeting. Sherri Booye seconded, and the Board approved unanimously.
Treasurer’s Report – Jessie reported that the balance is around 196K in the account. The biggest expense for GAIG was from the VHC check and it has cleared. Final balances from the show will be reported at the next board meeting.
GAIG Show: Tina reported that the show was a huge success. Many thanks to Robyn Nunnally and Michelle Lachner who were keeping competitors correctly social distancing. We had great volunteers- kudos to all of you and Rachel. One of the good things was we didn’t have to have volunteers to close the finals classes gates at the rings. There were lots of vendors which was wonderful. Nancy Doody and Nancy Lowey did a wonderful job of soliciting vendors and we picked up some who couldn’t go to Devon. Tina will give us info on the volunteers from each chapter so everyone can see who has what hours logged before we get to year end for both shows. The board would like to thank Sandy Toby and Laura Nelson for the wonderful contributions they made volunteering. Sheli is working on getting ribbons out and Tina is working on mailing tests as necessary.
2020 USDF Annual Virtual Convention: Please refer to the USDF website regarding the schedule and remember it’s free for GMO members. There are lots of educational sessions scheduled. Take advantage – it runs from Wednesday December 2nd thru Sunday December 6th. Many of the sessions will be in the evenings.
Chapter Updates:
SWADA reported that they will be having a mounted awards ceremony for their year end awards and they’ve been having lots of virtual schooling shows.
NOVA reported that they are having their championship schooling show on October 31st.
C’ville reported that they are having a schooling show November 7th at Cedar Creek.
Nevada reported that they have had many live and virtual schooling shows this year. Their last live show will be November 15th. They are also having a two day clinic the weekend of November 24th.
F’burg reported that they will allow members to use one of their scores from a virtual schooling show for year end awards.
2021 VADA Banquet: Joanne Collins has done a lot of work figuring out options that the board is considering for awards.
The awards ceremony will be on zoom- details to follow.
Shel Gafford Award: Sheli has one nomination so far. Please make sure the information is on your chapter websites. The nomination deadline is December 1st. The next Region 1 meeting will be via teleconference on the VADA conference number on November 11th. The meeting adjourned at 9:01 pm. VADA Shel Gafford Memorial Award for
EXCELLENCE IN SPORTMANSHIP
Nomination deadline for 2020 Awards: December 1, 2020
For anyone not fortunate enough to have known Shel, he was not only a gifted horseman and successful competitor, but also a truly
good sport and dedicated advocate to VADA. Shel was a seasoned competitor, having won the Gold and Silver Individual Medals in
his last two years as a Young Rider at the NAYRC. He always rode to win, but never at the expense of his horse or another rider.
Rather than “psyching” his fellow competitors, Shel was more likely to offer a helping hand or wish them luck. Furthermore, Shel was a
tireless supporter of VADA. He served as President during some of our Association’s most difficult and trying times. It is largely due to
his diplomacy and tenacity that VADA exists as it does today.
It is this spirit of unselfish good sportsmanship and generous volunteerism, which were so much a part of Shel’s nature, that VADA
wishes to encourage and reward. If you are aware of a VADA member who is: 1) Actively involved in any aspect of competition
and/or VADA activities (eg. Rider, owner, trainer, coach, show mom/dad, spouse, offspring, VADA Board Member, VADA
volunteer), 2) who consistently exhibits the characteristics of good sportsmanship and unselfish support of VADA, and 3) has
not received the Shel Gafford award within the past 10 years, please nominate that person for the Shel Gafford Award. Include in
your nomination the person’s name, chapter affiliation, and a brief statement (200 words or less) explaining why you feel your nominee
is deserving of this award.
Nominations must be received by December 1st. The slate of nominees will be sent to the President of each Chapter, who shall,
using the method they determine, poll the members of their Chapter and select their Chapter's choice for the award. In the event of a
tie, the VADA Board of Directors shall select the winning nominee from the two candidates. Chapters MUST report their selections
to Sheli King no later than January 15. The recipient will receive a special award and a check for $250.00.
