CHOC Children’s Hospital will celebrate a 50th Anniversary this October.  The Founda on kicked off 50 Years of Caring with the February 8 Gala.   The event  is “sold out” and we know the Gala will be a great success.   Throughout this year, and next, there will be a number of celebra ons that mark the Anniversaries of CHOC Children’s, the CHOC Founda on and our sister Guilds. 

February  just  seems  like a  me  to celebrate  special people  in our  lives with cards  (hopefully Kids’ Cards), hugs, kisses, chocolates and flowers.  It is also a great  me to pause and recognize our members for their years of service.    On Valen-ne’s Day last year we marked the service of our Charter Members, Doris Knau  and Darlene Knoop. 

The Li lest Angel Guild will also begin celebra ng our 50th Anniversary which  is  in December 2015.     At the February 13 General Mee ng we will recognize all of our current members that joined from 1965 to 1990.  Please a end our mee ng at the Yorba Linda Country Club as we celebrate their more than 25 years dedicated to the cause of helping the Children of CHOC.   

Our 2013-2014 event year is half-way through and has been very successful.  Our Chairs, Lori Stenovich (for our Pursenally Yours) and Terrilynn Nisle (for the Great Kitchens), are hard and work on their events.  Thanks to all of you for your sup-port.     We are planning our 2014-2015 Event year.  At our January Board mee ng, Chairs were named for Gi  Faire and Home Tour succeeding Ione Levin and Camille Ki ridge who “re red”.  Tricia Livermore was named Co-Chair of Gi  Faire and will serve along with Lucie Forward.  Karen Allen (yep that’s me) will succeed Camille Ki ridge on Home Tour.   

I won’t miss the opportunity of this column to say that I would like to have someone work with me next year as Co-Chair for Home Tour.  Please let me know if you are interested.    Also we are forming our Commi ees and I hope that many of you who served last year will be again be a part of Gi  Faire and Home Tour. This is a great  me to do something new and volunteer for one of these commi ees.  All of our Provisional and Associate Members are also welcome.

UPCOMING EVENTS

PURSENALLY YOURS - Those commi ee Angels are hard at work and they are almost done.   They are pu ng the finishing touches on what looks to be a huge success for LAG.  The invites are ready and are being sent out as you read this.  Please look for yours and invite all your girlfriends for a fabulous a ernoon at the Nixon Library on Saturday March 15th.  This event is a sell-out every year, so get your reserva ons in early.  This will be one event you will not want to miss.  So put on your dazzling a re and join us for a day of fun, food, purses, divine centerpieces, giggles, compe on for the diamond necklace and don’t forget… The Grab Bags….. get there early to snag yours.   

ORANGE COUNTY FOOD AND WINE – The date is set for Saturday night, May 17th, at the beau ful and impressive William Lyon Air Mu-seum.  Fine food from local Orange County Restaurants will be featured along with hand selected wines from dis nct Wineries located in California.  If you would like to help out, we have a commi ee forming… please email me if you are interested.  

Last year this event had over 300 people and looks to be bigger and be er in 2014.  The cost is $100.00 per person and will include all the food and wine, complete access to the museum, live music, silent auc on items and a great evening with the major proceeds being donated to CHOC.  Complimentary valet parking will be provided.  Tickets can be purchase on online at www.ocfoodandwine.com. 

GREAT KITCHENS OF ORANGE COUNTY – We have five beau ful homes secured for our first Great Kitchen Tours this year.  They are gor-geous and we know you will be  impressed with the designs and visions these homeowners have put  into their  in-door and out-door kitchens.  Terrilynn and her hardworking commi ee are crea ng an event that will be like no other.  Please stay tuned for the updates as they occur. Save the Date… Saturday June 7th.

Pursenally Yours Grab Bags Grab Bags will once again be featured at the Pursenally Yours Luncheon. In order to be able to do this we need donated gi  items to be used for the bags. We all have those wonderful but unused items tucked away . . . this is the perfect opportunity to be very PC and to be GREEN by RECYLING and RE-GIFTING. Your items can be re-gi ed to benefit CHOC and the Children they serve.   

 

We try to create a sliding value for the bags by grouping smaller items together to create theme packages with a higher value. 

 

Gi  cer ficates, gi  cards and event  ckets are always great.  

 

FYI  .  .  . As a reminder, the Grab Bags have been a sold out highlight of the Pursenally Yours’ Luncheon each year  - selling out  in a ma er of minutes.

I am having a difficult  me wrapping my mind around the fact that  it is February . . . Valen nes’ Day  is  just around the corner and Pursenally Yours is not far behind.  

I didn’t even have  me to make New Year’s resolu ons  . . . which I guess is a good thing . . . now I don’t have to worry about all those things I am not going to do this year.  So instead, I will focus on what I am going to do . . . be proac ve and focus on the posi ve. Goodbye to feeling badly about broken resolu ons.   Hello to feeling good about doing things with a posi ve a tude!   

Speaking of posi ve things . . . While the Kids’ Card Program was in a transi on mode; the members of LAG straightened their halos, put on fresh lips ck and con nued their support as in the past.  LAG provided underwri ng to sponsor a card.  Our mem-bers worked with CHOC pa ents to develop the artwork for the cards.   Members also volunteered to set up and staff outside sales events.  Kids’ Cards were sold at our LAG Gi  Faire.  LAG members also provided underwri ng, décor, food and beverages for the ar st’s recep on as well as the setup and take down.    

Member volunteer hours were spent at the Founda on providing administra on and other support for Kids’ Cards.   The con n-ued support of the Li lest Angel Guild is vital to con nue this program.   

Also at this  me we posi vely need be thinking about the new artwork, the 2014 underwriters, addi onal retail opportuni es, new customers as well as new  ideas and more hands on support for the 2014 Holiday Card Program.   Job descrip ons will be reviewed and revised for all areas of the card program.

COMING SOON – ELECTION OF NEW OFFICERS

I know we are only halfway through our fundraising year, but it is already  me to start the process of nomina ng our new leaders for 2014-2015.  Here are the steps to selec ng a new slate of officers: 

February 27, 2014 Board Mee ng – The Board will select a Board Member to serve on the Nomina ng Commi ee. March 13, 2014 General Mee ng – Parliamentarian will ask membership for nomina ons from the floor for three members to 

serve on the Nomina ng Commi ee.  Note:  These members must have been ac ve for one year.  The General Member-ship will vote on the three members.  The Nomina ng Commi ee consists of the Parliamentarian, one Board Member and three Ac ve Members.  A nomina ng mee ng will be called by the Parliamentarian to discuss and recruit the new slate of officers. 

April 10, 2014 General Mee ng – The Parliamentarian will present the proposed slate of officers.  Nomina ons from the floor will be requested.  Approved slate will be posted in the May newsle er. 

May 8, 2014 General Mee ng – Elec on of new officers will take place.  Note:  Newly elected President and Vice-President of Ways and Means will be responsible for filling all vacant Board posi ons.  All Chairmen posi ons are appointed so let  your new President and Vice-President of Ways & Means know about your interest in serving. 

June 12, 2014 General Mee ng – Installa on of newly-elected Execu ve Board.  Board Mee ng and Installa on Luncheon will follow.

Change for CHOC brought  in a total of $105.65:   purses $23.65, flowers $60 and books $22.00.   There were many  ladies wan ng to win Sharon’s beau ful floral arrangement.   

FYI - I didn’t win it this  me.   Bring in those dollars  - we have a huge collec on of new (never seen) books so please make sure to come by and take a look.  Also bring in your extra change to fill up our purses and $5 to join in the floral raffle.

Chester's Caramel Puff Corn 

1 s ck bu er 

1 cup brown sugar 

1/4 cup Karo syrup 

1/8 tsp. Baking Soda 

2 bags of Chester's Puff Corn Bu er flavor. 

(Albertsons, YL Blvd/New River and Stater Bros. YL Blvd/Lakeview stock it) 

1 large disposable aluminum roas ng pan 

 

In a saucepan, bring all ingredients except baking soda to a full boil.  S rring all the  me. 

Boil for 1 minute.  Remove from heat and add baking soda.  Pour over 2 bags of Chester's Puff Corn and toss to coat in the large disposable roas ng pan.  Bake at 250 degrees.  15 minutes, remove from oven and toss.  Return to oven, repeat procedure un l 

puff corn has baked a total of 1 hour. 

Store in a lidded container or a sealed gallon baggie.  Makes an excellent hostess gi  in a decora ve glass jar.   

Warning:  It's addic ve!  

 

 

Bacon‐Wrapped Dates Stuffed with Cream Cheese and Almonds by Emeril Lagasse 

Yield: 18 servings 

18 (1 x 1/4 inch) pieces of cream cheese 

18 pi ed dates (preferably Medjool) 

18 salted and roasted whole almonds 

6 slices bacon cut crosswise into thirds 

18 wooden picks 

Heat the oven to 400 degrees 

 

I doubled this recipe to fit into my li le crock pot to keep warm at the Bunco party.  Some of the dates I had to use a toothpick but if you overlap the bacon, it may not be necessary to use a toothpick. 

Take a date and slice it open to remove the pit.  Insert the cream cheese and 1 almond.   

Wrap the 1/3 piece of the bacon around the date.  Arrange dates, bacon seam down and 1 inch apart in a shallow baking pan.  Bake 15 minutes, then turn dates over with tongs and bake another 15 minutes un l bacon is crisp.  Drain on a paper towel 

and serve immediately.  I put the dates in my crock pot on warm and it seemed to be fine for the whole evening.
