HALOsonic Road Noise Cancellation: Quiet never sounded so good

Today’s multi-link suspensions create multiple noise paths into the cabin. While stiff bushings are often the best choice when trying to design a vehicle with great handling and cornering, they tend to allow more unwanted noise into the cabin, creating fatigue and stress. Therefore, vehicle manufacturers are forced to make trade-offs between handling and acceptable interior noise levels. This scale of the road noise issue is further amplified by the trend in modern vehicles to use larger wheels with low profile tires.

HARMAN partnered with Lotus Engineering to create one of the most exciting advances in automotive acoustics: the Road Noise Cancellation System (RNC). HARMAN RNC technology reduces unwanted road noise inside the car by utilizing recent breakthroughs in advanced technology that is applied in a very complex acoustic

environment. RNC uses accelerometers on the chassis to identify the frequencies of unwanted noise; the reference signal is relayed back to a controller which, in turn, generates a broadband noise cancellation signal through the vehicles audio system. Adaptive feedback control from microphones in the cabin further enhances system performance.
