1. General 1.1 2011 Samsung World Rowing Cup II - Introduction World Rowing is delighted to head to the city of Hamburg which, for the first time, is hosting a stage of World Rowing Cup. The new regatta course at Cove-Elbe water park was built by the Allgemeiner Alster-Club with the support of the City of Hamburg. The Allgemeiner Alster-Club was the first regatta association created in Germany and dates back to 1844. Stage two of the World Cup series shall be the occasion for athletes to consolidate and improve on their rankings which have emerged after stage one of the Samsung World Rowing Cup series in Munich, Germany. Munich more than lived up to the expectations that precede the first regatta of every season. Whilst last year’s World Cup winners, Great Britain again topped the points table, winning eleven medals, they were by no means unchallenged. Germany emerged triumphant in no less than four events, and took second place in the overall points table. There were a few surprises too, as Great Britain Olympic and World Champions Mark Hunter and Zac Purchase only managed fourth in the lightweight men’s double sculls and the Netherlands overhauled both Great Britain and Romania to win the women’s eight. The lightweight men’s four yet again provided umpires with a three-boat photo finish. This time, Denmark took the honours, which gave Denmark’s three-time Olympic Champion stroke Eskild Ebbesen the perfect birthday present. But with the arrival of more crews from the Southern Hemisphere, the competition is only going to get tougher. As has been custom since the start of the World Rowing Cup series in 1997, an event leader is determined in each boat class based on their final result at this regatta. The leader will be awarded the yellow leader bib, and carry forward their leader status to the next stage of the series. The 2011 series winner will be awarded at the end of the final stage of the World Rowing Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland, from 8 to 10 July. In this Media Guide Supplement you will find all of the information that you need about the 2011 Samsung World Rowing Cup series. A wide range of data is also available in the Annual Media Guide which can be found online. Don’t forget to also consult the online athlete and results database on www.worldrowing.com for detailed information on all current and past rowers who have raced at World Rowing events. We would hereby like to say a special thank you to you, the media, for your support and enthusiasm throughout the last Olympic cycle. We hope that we can continue to count on you to help us promote our sport and our athletes in a positive way throughout the world. If there is anything we can do to help you in your work, or any improvements in our services to you, please do not hesitate to let us know. Here’s to another exciting World Rowing Cup! Your World Rowing Communications Team Debora Feutren, FISA Communications Manager – Publications & Digital Media Marion Gallimore, FISA Communications Manager – Marketing & TV Melissa Bray, World Rowing Journalist Laura Fell, FISA Communications Assistant Pat Lambert, Chair of the Media & Promotions Commission

1.2 Samsung World Rowing Cup - Scoring system, Titles and Prizes The World Rowing Cup in its current format was created in 1997 as a partnership between successful existing regattas and FISA in order to create top competition opportunities for the athletes and in order to better promote the sport of rowing. It is a series of three regattas that include the 14 Olympic boat classes seeking points based on finish order. At each regatta, the national rowing federation with the most points at that particular regatta will be declared winner of that World Rowing Cup event and will receive the leading nation cup. The title of 2011 Samsung World Rowing Cup champion in each Olympic boat class shall be conferred on the federation with the most points earned from racing in that boat class in all three regattas. The National Federation with the most points overall from all Olympic boat classes will be declared overall winner of the 2011 Samsung World Rowing Cup. This will take place following the final race at the final stage of the series on the Rotsee in Lucerne, Switzerland on 10 July. At each regatta, in each event, the highest placing boat from a National Federation will be awarded the following points:
Place Points Place Points Place Points 1st 8 4th 4 7th 1 2nd 6 5th 3 3rd 5 6th 2
Points will not be awarded to the second crew of a federation placing a crew in one of the first 7 places. 2. Samsung World Rowing Cup II – Hamburg, Germany 2.1 Key Media Information Local OC Press Officer Press Officer: Press Officer: Juliane Moeklinghoff E-mail: [email protected] Tel.: +49 40 3005 1145 About Hamburg The regatta course is situated at Dove-Elbe water park. It is a calm stretch of water in a conservation area in the south-east of Hamburg. In the 1980s, the natural setting of the Dove-Elbe was converted into a modern regatta course, meeting all requirements for national and international contests. Due to its location in a listed nature conservation area, the spectator stands, pedestrian bridges, floating start tower, pontoon start bridges and additional landing stages requires for international regattas have to be installed temporarily. The course is 2150m long and 200m wide. The direction of the course is west-east. The city’s abundance of water makes it ideal for rowing. Mainland Europe’s first rowing club was founded in Hamburg in 1836, ‘Der Hamburger Ruder Club’. This marked the birth of rowing as a sport in Germany. Today, Hamburg’s rowing tradition flourishes in 20 rowing clubs with more than 5,000 active members. Germany has a population of approximately 81,471,834 (July 2011) of which 4.3 million people live in the city-state of Hamburg and the surrounding metropolitan region. One of Germany’s most well-known and successful rowers, Peter-Michael Kolbe, began rowing in Hamburg, and rowers from Hamburg regularly make their mark on the international rowing scene. 2.4 Who to Watch in Munich Women’s Pair (W2-) After the first World Cup last month in Munich, the names on everyone’s lips in the pair are Helen Glover and Heather Stanning from Great Britain. They raced and won, cementing their status as long-term medal contenders after taking a surprise silver at the 2010 World Rowing Championships. Glover and Stanning, however, will be up against the reigning World Champions for the first time this season. Juliette Haigh and Rebecca Scown of New Zealand have arrived in Europe and will be ready for some racing action. But the ‘off-season’ has not gone smoothly for Haigh and Scown. Haigh was out of the boat for some time due to a back injury, leaving Scown to improve her single sculling skills and Haigh her swimming acumen. But selectors have faith and all will be revealed in Hamburg. This race is likely to be a showdown between New Zealand and Great Britain with the remainder of the field hoping to hold the leaders pace. Amongst them will be Germany’s Kerstin Hartmann and Marlene Sinnig who finished a disappointing seventh at the Munich World Cup. W2-: Major results since 2007

Men’s Pair (M2-) At the Munich World Cup winning crew, Great Britain (Pete Reed and Andrew Triggs Hodge) finished powerfully, with Italy’s Carboncini and Mornati coming behind, followed by Greece. The Italians and Greeks are not racing in Hamburg, leaving Reed and Hodge to face their nemesis, reigning World Champions Eric Murray and Hamish Bond of New Zealand. Murray and Bond did not race at the first stage of the World Rowing Cup and since then there has been a fair amount of banter in the press about the meeting of these two crews. Hamburg will be the place. This will be Murray and Bond’s first international race since their win over Great Britain at last year’s World Rowing Championships. Recent simulation races have shown they have retained their boat speed. Let the racing begin. Keep an eye out too for the three German crews with Felix Drahotta and Maximillan Munski named as the top boat. It is likely these three crews are ‘seat racing’ to prove national team selection to coach Hartmut Buschbacher. They will be out to do their best. Perhaps not in the medals, but worth noting is Miguel Cerda Silva and Lorenzo Candia Sandoval of Chile. Cerda, 41, has a huge rowing pedigree, usually as a lightweight and this move into the open category could indicate their aim to qualify for next year’s Olympic Games. M2-: Major results since 2007

Women’s Double Sculls (W2x) When Katherine Grainger (GBR) stormed through to a comfortable first with spare rower Melanie Wilson, it reconfirmed the supremacy of World Champion Grainger in this event. Again Grainger’s partner, Anna Watkins is unavailable at this regatta and Grainger will be joined this time by Victoria Thornley with Wilson promoted to the quad. Can Grainger do it again? In Hamburg the British will again face Yulia Bichyk and Tatsiana Kukhta of Belarus who finished third at last month’s World Rowing Cup. They will also face the return to the double of the Antosova sisters from the Czech Republic. On a good day the sisters are fast and they appear to be continually improving. The Brits will also have to face three German crews, one of them including the return of Peggy Waleska to top rowing. But the biggest threat is likely to be 2009 World Champions Julia Michalska and Magdalena Fularczyk of Poland. The duo was third last year and has the talent to get back to gold medal position. In 2009 it was Germany. Cohen and Sullivan are racing for the first time internationally this season at Hamburg and, in the absence of Germany, Cohen and Sullivan could find their greatest competition in Great Britain’s Marcus Bateman and Matthew Wells. Bateman and Wells are regularly in the medals. They were silver medallists at the 2010 World Rowing Championships and took silver last month in Munich. In their second year together, this British duo continues to be a strong force. Adding to the mix will be Cedric Berrest and Julien Bahain of France who have a long history of success together from the quad and now the double. The double has been the home of Allar Raja and Kaspar Taimsoo of Estonia for three years now and the duo continues to improve. Last month at Munich, Raja and Taimsoo only just missed out on a medal by inches.

But as the season moves on and crews get finalised, competition is only going to get tighter. Germany is boating a completely fresh line-up from the Munich crew that finished third and New Zealand has arrived with two of the crew returning from their 2008 Beijing line-up (Dallinger and Meyer). Lightweight Women’s Double Sculls (LW2x) A private battle is going on between two British crews. At Munich the two crews finished in gold and silver positions with the number one crew of Sophie Hosking and Hester Goodsell having a slight edge. If these two crews focus too much on each other they may not be as lucky in Hamburg, as the very accomplished lightweight Marie-Louise Draeger of Germany has returned to the doubles scene. Draeger is Germany’s best lightweight sculler. Last year she took an impressive two World Championship gold medals – in the single and in the quad. At Hamburg, Draeger will race with Anja Noske who was second last year in the lightweight double. Together they are likely to be a force to be reckoned with. Keep an eye out too for Julie Nichols and Kristin Hedstrom of the United States. The duo finished just behind the British at Munich and they are back to hone their racing skills. The Danes and Dutch have also returned to race in Hamburg and will no doubt aim to push into the medals this time. LW2x: Major results since 2007

Lightweight Men’s Double Sculls (LM2x) Always a big event, the lightweight men’s double sculls has attracted 25 entries to Hamburg and the field will be quite different from Munich. Gold and bronze medallists from Munich, Germany and Denmark, are not racing, leaving the way open to Jeremie Azou and Frederic Dufour of France who were the Munich silver medallists, as well as to Mads Rasmussen and Rasmus Quist of Denmark, 2008 Olympic bronze medallists now back on the rowing scene, who finished third in Munich. The French and the Danes, however, will have their work cut out for them. Reigning World Champions Zac Purchase and Mark Hunter (GBR) were not happy to finish out of the medals in Munich and they will be back for revenge. Hamburg also sees the arrival of last year’s World Rowing Championship bronze medallists New Zealand (Uru and Taylor). Then tucked inside Poland’s number two crew is the return to international rowing of two-time Olympic Champion, Robert Sycz who won at both the Sydney and Athens Olympic but failed to qualify for Beijing. He has returned with new vigour and will no doubt receive some awed sideways glances from the rest of the field. LM2x: Major results since 2007

Denmark, with the return of the amazing three-time Olympic Champion Eskild Ebbesen in stroke seat, finished first, France was just a whisker back in second and reigning World Champions Great Britain were in third by two hundredths of a second. All three of these boats are racing in Hamburg and all three will be out to win. Added to the mix will be the Kuehner and Schoemann-Finck brothers back together in the four. This German line-up is sure to love the home crowd advantage and this will be worth a couple of seconds of boat speed. Watch out too for the Netherlands and Poland who have had levels of success in the past. The closeness of the racing in this event makes it a final not to be missed with the medal colours likely to be decided in the very last stroke.

This came as quite a surprise to the reigning World Champions, Great Britain, who found themselves back in the bronze medal position. It has caused British women’s coach Paul Thompson to adjust their line-up with Melanie Wilson replacing Debbie Flood. Flood will now race in the single. Germany finished second at Munich and they have also done a crew adjustment with Tina Manker now slotted into two seat. Men’s Quadruple Sculls (M4x) Last year this event became a battle of Olympic Champions, Poland against Under-23 Champions Croatia and with both crews facing each other again this year at Munich, it looked like the showdown would continue. But nothing was further from the truth. Last month Germany won, Croatia came second and Poland limped home in fifth. A new racing agenda has begun. Germany’s Schulze, Wende, Schoof and Grohmann are racing again at Hamburg with just a slight tweaking to their seating order. Did they strike it lucky in Munich or is this the crew that will take Germany through to next year’s Olympic Games? Croatia and Poland have not shied away from racing and are fronting up at Hamburg to prove themselves to the rowing world. Great Britain, who held the leaders’ pace in Munich, but ended up fourth, are also showing up again in Hamburg with Russia joining in on the action. This will be a race to watch as new rivalries form and old ones continue. M4x: Major results since 2007

Women’s Eight (W8+) This could be Great Britain’s chance to break into the gold medal spot. Great Britain finished a close second to the Netherlands in Munich last month and as the Dutch won’t be racing in Hamburg, Great Britain has a real chance. The British have finished fifth at the 2009 World Rowing Championships and then fourth in 2010. Their perseverance seems to be paying off with a crew that gets tweaked every year but keeps a stable core group. Up against Great Britain will be Germany with potential threats also coming from France and China. W8+: Major results since 2007

12 Women’s Single Sculls (W1x) Annekatrin Thiele of Germany broke into the single sculling scene with style at Munich by leading for most of the final, then finishing a solid second when the unstoppable Ekaterina Karsten of Belarus sprinted for the line. Thiele comes to the single after an impressive career in the double sculls including an Olympic silver medal from Beijing. Also there to challenge Karsten’s dominance is Xiuyun Zhang of China. Zhang’s career spans nearly two decades including a silver medal at the 1996 Olympic Games. After a post-Beijing Olympic break she is back and showing her former speed, having won bronze in Munich. Karsten will also have to watch out for Russia (Julia Levina) and New Zealand (Emma Twigg) who are debuting their 2011 season in Hamburg. On a good day both of these athletes are medal contenders. Reigning World Champion Frida Svensson will be hoping to prove herself after a disappointing sixth in Munich and likewise for Mirka Knapkova of the Czech Republic who was also off the pace and finished fifth.

Synek’s main competition came from Germany’s Marcel Hacker who is not racing in Hamburg, but the field has extended this time to include former World Champion Mahe Drysdale of New Zealand. Drysdale has spent much of the ‘off-season’ battling back problems and this regatta will be a test to see where he currently stands internationally. Also in medal contention is Alan Campbell of Great Britain. Campbell was not at full health in Munich and finished back in fifth despite giving it his all in the final sprint. Olympic Champion Olaf Tufte of Norway did not start in the final at Munich for medical reasons, but if he is back at full strength for Hamburg, Synek will have a real race on his hands. Keep an eye out too for Sweden’s Lassi Karonen. Karonen was third in Munich and is looking very solid this season.

In Munich the German eight continued their winning ways and in Hamburg Buschbacher has fine-tuned the crew to make it just two crew members different from the 2010 crew. Sebastian Schmidt is back in stroke seat with coxswain Martin Sauer calling the shots. But hoping to put a dent into Germany’s armour are the British. In the last year they have regularly finished second to the Germans and they are not happy. Coached by former South African coach Christian Felkel, Great Britain desperately want gold. Also fighting to get into the gold medal spot is Poland. The Poles finished closely behind Great Britain at Munich and they are back for another shot at the top medal. Watch out too for China. They held the pace for the first 1000m at Munich and if they improve their second 1000m, China could be in a medal winning position.
