Flag and its part
y light blue background- stands for thevarious Turkic peoples that make up the
present-day population of the country. It
represents sky God Tengre ´the eternal
wide blue skyµ and water as well.
y Sun- represents the source of life and
energy; symbol of wealth and abundance
y Sun·s rays- like grain which is the basis
of abundance and prosperity
y Golden eagle- symbolizes the power of
the state; symbolizes the independence,freedom and flight of the future.
Kazakh-people from the Kazakhstan. It means
´free warriorµ or a ´steppe roamerµ
Kazakhstan is the ninth largest country in the
world and it is also the world·s largest landlocked
country.

Astana - present capital of the Kazakhstan
- It means capital in Kazakhstan
- The word originated from Persia
means ´thresholdµ implying where the
court is seated or the body of a sacred
person is interred

Government officials cited several problems with
keeping the capital in Almaty, such as the city's
risk of seismic activity, insufficient room for
expansion, and proximity to international borders.

* Kazakhstan has the potential for
becoming one of central Asia's richest countries
because of its huge mineral and oil resources and
its liberalized economy, which encourages
Western investment. In 2000, oil was discovered
in Kazakhstan's portion of the Caspian Sea. It is
believed to be the largest oil find in 30 years. In
March 2001, a pipeline opened to transport oil
from the Tengiz fields to the Russian Black Sea
port of Novorossiysk. In 2004, Kazakhstan signed
a deal allowing China to build an oil pipeline to
the Chinese border.

human rights abuses and corruption.

HISTORICAL EVENTS
Kazakhstan is a former member of the
USSR. They serve as the raw material supplier to
the economy of Soviet Union. They gained their
independence on December 16, 1991. The
attempted coup further weakened the Soviet
government, which could no longer control the
government for self-rule in the nation·s republics.
Within weeks, Kazakhstan and all of the other
Soviet republics declared independence from the
Soviet Union. At the present time the Kazakhstan
chain in Organization for Security and Co-
operation in Europe.

Nauryz (Islamic New Year) - one of the biggest
holidays in Central Asia.
- in Kazakhstan it is celebrated on the day
of the spring equinox, March 22
- On that day, the streets of villages and
towns are transformed. Guests are
hosted in beautiful yurts with the
traditional Nauryz kozhe dish made of
seven traditional ingredients.
- People respecting this nearly month-long
holiday forgive each others' debts and
offences.
National games
* These are usually performed on horseback and
are an opportunity to witness the Kazakhs'
outstanding riding skills.

Historical sites
Turkestan - The mausoleum for Khodja Ahmed
Yassawi is an architectural beauty. It is rightfully
recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
- Today the mausoleum is a destination for
worship and pilgrimage. Families make
the trip from afar to come and pray near
the grave of Khodja Ahmed Yassawi,
completing their pilgrimage with a
counter clockwise tour of the mausoleum
praying and touching the walls hoping it
will help make their wishes come true.
Otrar - settlement over 2·000 years ago
- Its height came in the 10th to 12th
centuries when it was a key trading
centre on the Syr Darya river, even
minting its own coins.
- The excavations clearly show the interior
lay out of the dwellings with what can
appear as rooms, inner court yards or
kitchens and rooms with large vases duginto the floor, possibly with the intent of
storing and keeping cool of water or
wine.
