Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Saturday, June 15 th 2019 Race 1 #7 Art of Almost #2 Lacustre (GB) #5 Rince Tapaigh #4 Alice's War #7 ART OF ALMOST switched back to the Tapeta and scored an easy win in a short field of three-year olds on May 24. She catches a manageable group for her first start against winners. #2 LACUSTRE (GB) was outfinished in a 12 furlong turf race at Keeneland two starts back, then finished third in a Stake at the same distance, beaten by the same horse that had won the previous race. She raced well over synthetic surfaces in England, breaking her maiden against a short field of three-year olds last November when closing from last at 10 furlongs. #5 RINCE TAPAIGH made a rail move turning for home then flattened out when kicking off her season at a route on May 19. She could improve in her second start off of the bench. #4 ALICE'S WAR set the pace and was run down late to be second, exiting the same May 19 race as Rince Tapaigh. She figures to be forwardly placed again. Race 2 #4 Power House #2 Happycrest #6 Nearly Missed #8 Klassy Delight #4 POWER HOUSE was involved in a five horse speed duel while racing into a backstretch headwind on May 12, forgiving her empty finish. She may be the controlling speed stretching out in distance and dropping in class; the dam was a turf winner who's produced two turf winners in four foals to try the surface. #2 HAPPYCREST kicked off the season with a third place finish for $25,000 behind a pair of three-year olds who were dropping in class. She steps back down in class for her second start of the season. #6 NEARLY MISSED ran okay when facing three-year olds on debut in May, then came up empty when facing older on June 1. She drops down from $40,000 to $15,000. #6 KLASSY DELIGHT had a wide trip and came up empty when kicking off her season on May 24. Her form is very inconsistent but she has run well when routing on turf in the past. Race 3 #4 Cooler Mike Best Bet #2 Kingsport #1 Thor's Rocket #3 Nipigon #4 COOLER MIKE was pressured on the front end then outfinished by a powerful closer when facing second level allowance company on May 18. His biggest threats are all making their first starts of the year; he may be able to steal it on the front end. #2 KINGSPORT was a four time Stakes winner in eight starts last year. In the past few years he has not been at his best off of the layoff and he will likely be heavily favoured. #1 THOR'S ROCKET missed the top three only once last year. He generally closes from the back but is able to race well stalking, a style that may work out well in a race with not much speed. #3 NIPIGON returns as a gelding for his seven- year old debut. He was a two-time winner against easier company at Presque Isle. He does have some back class but will need to improve to win. Race 4 #6 Showbiz Lady #3 Dangerous Liaison #4 Foxxy Belle #9 Jenny's Victory #6 SHOWBIZ LADY had a rough start then made up some ground to finish third when kicking off her season on May 10. She was claimed out of that start; the new connections have waited the 30 day claiming "jail" period to make her eligible to run back for this price. #3 DANGEROUS LIAISON put in a rally to be fourth in her final start of 2018 for $40,000 and now kicks off the year for $25,000. Her maiden breaker came on the front end but she may sit off of some of the other speed types. #4 FOXXY BELLE had a troubled trip on May 12 and probably should have finished third, then returned with a decent third place finish when dueling on the front end. She now takes the drop in for $25,000. #9 JENNY'S VICTORY was forced to show some versatility when facing some early interference on June 1 but managed to make up a bit of ground. If she sits off of the other speed she could threaten. Race 5 #8 Cheekylicious #9 Dee Dee's Angel #5 Hanchy #2 Easy Bid #8 CHEEKYLICIOUS did not break quickly when kicking off her season 10 days ago. If she breaks well she could be lone speed in a race that looks lacking in pace. #9 DEE DEE'S ANGEL kicked off her season facing maiden allowance company in a race marred by delays behind the gate. She takes a steep drop in her second start off of the bench. #5 HANCHY showed some turf ability last year. She kicked off her season with a decent third for $7,500 racing without shoes; the shoes will go back on if this race remains on turf. #2 EASY BID got a wide trip when finishing a decent fourth for $7,500 in her first start off of a three month break on June 1. She has raced well on turf in the past. Race 6 #4 Magic Flute #5 Invodkawetrust #9 Quality Heat #10 Beyond Mybudget #4 MAGIC FLUTE is a half-sister to Romeo O Romeo, a two year old debut winner on the Arlington polytrack who was Stakes placed at two. Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Saturday, June 15th 2019 Race 1 #7 Art of Almost #2 Lacustre (GB) #5 Rince Tapaigh #4 Alice's War #7 ART OF ALMOST switched back to the Tapeta and scored an easy win in a short field of three-year olds on May 24.

Race 3 #4 Cooler Mike – Best Bet #2 Kingsport #1 Thor's Rocket #3 Nipigon #4 COOLER MIKE was pressured on the front end then outfinished by a powerful closer when facing second level allowance company on May 18. His biggest threats are all making their first starts of the year; he may be able to steal it on the front end. #2 KINGSPORT was a four time Stakes winner in eight starts last year. In the past few years he has not been at his best off of the layoff and he

will likely be heavily favoured. #1 THOR'S ROCKET missed the top three only once last year. He generally closes from the back but is able to race well stalking, a style that may work out well in a race with not much speed. #3 NIPIGON returns as a gelding for his seven-year old debut.

The mare was a Grade 1 winning synthetic router; Point of Entry is a 14% two year

Page 2: Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Saturday, June 15th 2019 · 2019-06-15 · Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Saturday, June 15th 2019 Race 1 #7 Art of Almost #2

old sire; his progeny strike at 16% in a small sample size on synthetic. #5 INVODKAWETRUST had a wide post and got a wide trip when debuting on May 19. She could end up saving some more ground here and has the benefit of experience. #9 QUALITY HEAT has four winning siblings in six to race, including multiple Stakes winner on synthetic Frank Conversation. Quality Road is a 20% juvenile sire. The pedigree suggests routing will be in her future. #10 BEYOND MYBUDGET is the second foal to race for a dam who was a Stakes winner on the synthetic. Munnings is an 18% synthetic sire.

Race 7 #6 In a Twist #3 Frobisher Bay #2 Vividari #8 Cheek to Cheek #6 IN A TWIST broke slowly then angled wide last time out, making up good ground on a day where the outside was not the best part of the track. The dam was a winner on turf; his lone sibling to race tried the turf once with no luck. #3 FROBISHER BAY got hooked in a speed duel, put the other pacesetter away then gave way within the furlong pole on May 26. If he shakes loose he could be dangerous. #2 VIVIDARI was delayed in the paddock with a shoe repair last time out then ran alright in a solid group for this level. If anybody goes with Frobisher Bay, he may be able to get a good inside stalking trip. #8 CHEEK TO CHEEK showed a strong turn of foot when winning his seasonal debut on May 19. That turn of foot could be effective on the turf if he works out a trip.

Race 8 #6 Corky's the Name #2 Milwaukee Magic #5 Top Hat Trick #8 Torbuk #6 CORKY'S THE NAME kicked off the season in a starter/optional claiming race. On that day he lost a shoe in the paddock, was not cooperative trying to get it back on and ended up having to race without hind shoes. That issue likely ruined his race before he got on the track; he drops in class today. #2 MILWAUKEE MAGIC had trouble finding room entering the stretch when starting his season on April 21. He returns off of nearly two months off; his best form last year came early in the season. #5 TOP HAT TRICK was pressed while setting the pace on May 31, giving way to be fourth. He cuts back in distance and figures to be able to stalk or race from midpack as opposed to being a pacesetter. #8 TOBRUK has taken advantage of favourable circumstances in both of his wins this year. He enters in good form but is facing a tougher group here.

Race 9 #12 Fine Lady #3 Post to Post #11 Mamita's Chica #4 Peace Control

#12 FINE LADY showed some ability as a juvenile but came up flat in her 2019 debut on May 18. She gets onto the turf for her second start off of the layoff; the dam was a multiple Stakes winner over the grass. #3 POST TO POST was running very well on the turf last summer then closed off the season with a lackluster effort in a sprint on the Tapeta. She catches a manageable looking group for her first start of the season. #11 MAMITA'S CHICA ran a series of very good races between September and December last season. She gets over the turf well and runs competitive speed figures. #4 PEACE CONTROL finished evenly when sprinting on May 18. She has some early speed but may end up stalking some other speed types in her first start at a route; the only sibling to try the turf was a winner over it.

Race 10 #5 Golden Garter #4 Amalfi Coast #8 Dashing Angel #1 A Broken Breeze #5 GOLDEN GARTER broke poorly and was pretty rank down the backside but showed interest when advancing up the rail on the turn and rallying in the stretch. If she settles better early she could improve. #4 AMALFI COAST will likely be heavily bet off of an impressive runner up finish on debut, beaten by a game second time starter who has since run a good fourth in a Stake. #8 DASHING ANGEL hit the gate on debut in a five-furlong turf sprint at Gulfstream, then fell back quite a bit and never really got rolling. That race has produced two winners including Trenchtown Cat, who has since won a pair of Stakes races. #1 A BROKEN BREEZE was off a step slowly then angled wide when rallying on May 12. She could move forward in her second start off of the layoff.

Race 11 #6 Forest Halo #3 Gypsy Jazz #10 Hurricane Emily #1 Maximum Entropy #5 Glib Marylin #6 FOREST HALO got shut off and lost all momentum when starting to rally on a dead rail on May 10, then came up empty 10 days later. Her lone turf race last year was a good effort in a solid group; she takes a step down in class. #3 GYPSY JAZZ dug in gamely and missed by only a neck when beaten by a foe dropping in from $40,000 on June 1, but was disqualified for early interference. She goes back down to the $15,000 level. #10 HURRICANE EMILY had a wide trip racing into a headwind and came up completely empty when facing better company on May 12. She drops in class and gets back onto her preferred surface. #1 MAXIMUM ENTROPY made only two starts last year, not making the races until September, and ran decently both times. She could get a good inside trip with the turf rail in Lane 5. #5 GLIB MARYLIN closed well with a wide trip to be second for $7,500. She steps up in class but doesn’t catch the toughest group for the level.
