Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson

Sunday, June 21st 2020

Race 1

#2 Anita Grigio

#4 French Charm

#7 Six Pack Girl

#1 Mine Fast Philly

#2 ANITA GRIGIO ran well at the start of her two year old

campaign but began to tail off a bit towards the end of the

year. She had a number of wide trips; she draws well for

her 2020 return. #4 FRENCH CHARM is the clear horse

to beat. She broke a bit slowly and seemed a bit green

when racing for $25,000 on June 6; she may simply

prove too tough with that tightener into her. #7 SIX PACK

GIRL debuts in a realistic spot for owner/trainer Matt

Douglas, who had some success with his only other

horse last year. Signature Red is a 21% debut sire. #1

MINE FAST PHILLY broke slowly and made a mild rally

while laying in a bit on June 7. The 0-for-19 mare can pop

with a big effort here and there but is in tougher today

than she was two weeks ago.

Race 2

#3 Rosiejewel Dancer

#2 Lenches Gimme

#1 Onezy’s Dream

#4 Savvy’s Sister

#3 ROSIEJEWEL DANCER was often in far too tough

last year. In her two starts for $25,000 she was able to

break her maiden and run a deceptively good sixth in a

race where she briefly looked like a threat for a minor

placing. She drops in for $7,500 for her first start outside

of age-restricted company. #2 LENCHES GIMME was

very game in defeat two weeks ago. She will likely take a

lot of support based on the 62 Beyer she earned, which

to me has the potential to be an inflated number. #1

ONEZY’S DREAM will make her 15th start over a 13

month span here. Her last two races at Gulfstream are

forgivable, cross-out races. She should appreciate getting

back to the Tapeta; hopefully she is not going over the

top. #4 SAVVY’S SISTER looked empty midway around

the turn and was never involved when competing 10 days

ago. She halves in value for her second start of the

season.

Race 3

#1 Art of Almost

#5 Bold Script

#3 Rideforthecause

#4 Moonlight Rain

#1 ART OF ALMOST rebounded off a non-effort over the

Gulfstream dirt with a very nice run over the Churchill turf

where she drifted in the stretch. Although both of her wins

have came over the synthetic, she has run some

tremendous races against top level company over the

turf. #5 BOLD SCRIPT may be the pacesetter in a race

lacking in speed. Her Gulfstream form is solid; last time

she was beaten by a horse who benefitted from a perfect

trip, and she has raced well over the grass before. #3

RIDEFORTHECAUSE ran an okay fourth on March 28

then was flat in the same April 18 dirt race that Art of

Almost competed in. She had some time in Ocala before

returning to Toronto. #4 MOONLIGHT RAIN was stuck

with wide trips in both of her Tampa starts this winter.

She does appear to be a touch better on the Tapeta but

she could prove to be a turf horse with a proper trip.

Race 4

#8 Merveilleux

#3 Super Patriotic

#6 Grand Mesa

#7 Fresh Princess

#8 MERVEILLEUX closed out her two year old year with

narrow defeats in both the Princess Elizabeth and the

Ontario Lassie. She has the speed to get position from

the outside and isn’t hooking the toughest group for her

three year old debut. #3 SUPER PATRIOTIC shortened

up to a sprint and was able to win in dominant fashion on

December 13 in a race where the runner up was an

Ontario Sired class-jumper. She, along with Niigon’s Spin

to her inside, figures to be a pace presence. #6 GRAND

MESA was able to blow up the tote board on July 6 but

came up empty when returning on August 24. She has

been a notorious bad actor; if she has matured at all she

may be a very nice horse. #7 FRESH PRINCESS

appeared to struggle a bit when switching leads at the

head of the lane on June 6. The blinkers are shed; in her

only route start she was third in the Algoma.

Race 5

#4 November Fog

#3 Grey Seal

#2 A Broken Breeze

#1 Royal Wedding

#4 NOVEMBER FOG will try turf for her three year old

debut. She only ran one poor effort at two, and seemed to

take a big step forward in her final start when setting the

pace and finishing third behind Curlin’s Voyage and

Merveilleux. #3 GREY SEAL raced twice in turf sprints in

New Orleans this winter, finishing midpack in a second

level allowance then having a rough trip and not

threatening in a first level allowance. She figures to be a

pace factor here. #2 A BROKEN BREEZE had trouble

Page 2: Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Sunday, … › wp-content › uploads › pdfs › free...2020/06/21  · Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Sunday, June 21st 2020

late on the turn when closing to be fourth behind a lone

speed winner in her final start of 2019. She gets back

onto the turf; she was winter trained in South Carolina. #1

ROYAL WEDDING did not run a poor race despite going

winless in 2019. Despite both being four place finishes,

her two turf races were probably her best efforts last year.

Race 6

#2 Told It All

#1 Our Uncle Drew

#4 Mayito

#3 Orazio

#2 TOLD IT ALL could likely show some speed here. His

race at Tampa in May was very good; he was wide

throughout, made the lead turning for home then flattened

out in the final furlong. With a better trip he could be a big

factor. #1 OUR UNCLE DREW rarely ran a bad race last

year but often had no excuses either. He has solid Beyer

figures for this group and draws well with the portable rail

in Lane 3. #4 MAYITO had been in great form but threw

in a clunker last time out at Gulfstream. He is clearly

capable of better and draws well. #3 ORAZIO ran his

better races on turf last year and will get his first

opportunity to go a route of ground over the surface here.

Blinkers are removed after having them for four starts.

Race 7

#3 Summer Sunday

#1 Jean Elizabeth

#8 Painting

#10 Foxxy Belle

#3 SUMMER SUNDAY was brilliant at the start of the

2019 meet, finished evenly over a deep track when

beaten by Alnilah in the Seaway, then ran an okay fourth

behind Jean Elizabeth in the Ontario Fashion. She may

have been a bit over the top at that point in the year and

could be a big player now that she is fresh. #1 JEAN

ELIZABETH is a truly game racehorse, sporting 14 career

wins and searching for her eighth consecutive Stakes

victory. There are other speed types here but whether or

not they are quick enough to press her remains to be

seen; if not she may prove too tough to run down. #8

PAINTING was a highly regarded prospect early last

year. She looked good winning on debut, and proved at

the end of the year that she may be a true Stakes horse

when she closed to be second in the Bessarabian. If she

continues to move forward as a four year old she may be

the sleeper. #10 FOXXY BELLE has been a tremendous

claim, winning five of seven starts off of the claim

including three consecutive second level allowance

races. This will be her first foray into Stakes competition.

Race 8

#1 Sansa’s Vow - Best Bet

#2 Candy’s Dream

#7 Keepme in Thegame

#6 Joyful Cat

#1 SANSA’S VOW debuted with a solid third place finish

at the Fair Grounds in March. She was steadied going

into the opening turn in that debut; she may be able to

find better early position today. #2 CANDY’S DREAM

was able to get a good covered up trip on opening day

and ran second behind a winter raced winner. She draws

well again today, giving her hope at that covered up trip

once again, but she may also show speed on the stretch

out. You won’t get 49-1 this time. #7 KEEPME IN

THEGAME raced in New York and at Keeneland last year

where she was a fringe player. Her speed figures are

very competitive with this group. #1 JOYFUL CAT returns

after a wide trip in New Orleans in January. She

maintained very good form over this turf course last year.

Race 9

#1 Forester’s Fortune

#10 Executive Search

#8 Big Executive

#6 Seventh Wonder

#9 Kish Point

#1 FORESTER’S FORTUNE was hindered by a habit of

bolting at the head of the lane in his first couple of starts

as a two year old, then seemed a bit disinterested once

the bolting issue had been sorted. He has good early

gate speed; the blinkers are being removed for his return.

#10 EXECUTIVE SEARCH closed well to be second

behind the well-regarded Silence Breakers in his debut

last year. He figures to be the favourite but will have to

work out a trip from the outside. #8 BIG EXECUTIVE

trained at Gulfstream over the winter and is now ready to

debut. Big Screen is a 13% debut sire; the dam has

produced both Cooler Mike and Sav, who were both

Stakes winners last year. #6 SEVENTH WONDER was

thought to have had some potential as a two year old but

has not really materialized. He is a speed horse but has

run some of his better races stalking, which could be an

ideal trip if Forester’s Fortune tires in the stretch. #9 KISH

POINT is one of two debut runners for Box Arrow Farm

and Gordon Colbourne in here. He is a half brother to the

talented Sable Island by Frac Daddy, who is four for 17

with first timers.
