I felt honored to be nominated to compete in the GasTerra Energizing Future Talent Award Contest. I would never let such an opportunity pass up! It was a great performance, although it was over before I knew it. Winning the prize was amazing, but my fellow students were also very good. According to the jury my strong points were my sound, musicality, timing and the way I played together with the other musicians.

Daan Kleijn, Alumnus Guitar Jazz (2011)

“Great to hear your own name at the end of the sentence ‘and the winner is…’!”

To hand out the GasTerra Energizing Future Talent Award to such a talented jazz guitarist as Daan Kleijn was satisfying. GasTerra supports these initiatives because we find that art and culture contribute indispensably to our society. That is why we did not hesitate when Swingin’ Groningen proposed to hand out the Award. Go for it!

Performing on stage and in front of the classIf your ambition is to have music as your future profession, then the Prince Claus Conservatoire is the place for you. Here you will receive music education from authoritative teachers, from both the Netherlands and abroad. The programmeis taught in a balanced combination of mutual trust and professionalism. Your training for the real world of professional music will be customized to your individual needs. Since you have to perform music in practice, there will be many opportunities to practice during the study program. You will gain practical experience through performances and work placements.

You wish to conduct an orchestra with great passion or you wish to be one of the orchestra members. Your ambition is to fly around the world with your own jazz combo or is your ambition to perform at all sorts of festivals in a string quartet. Or you wish to remain in the Netherlands and teach music at a secondary school. Whether you are a musician or a music teacher, music plays a central role in your life. Before you are going to make it in the music world, you need to develop different skills. Therefore you will gain not only a theoretical foundation, but you will also learn how to perform. After all, a special aspect of this profession is that you receive an immediate reaction from your audience, whether you are on stage or in front of a class. Furthermore, you need to develop entrepreneurial skills if you are going to make it in the music world.

International contextMusic is a universal language, making it possible for our students to undertake their work placements abroad, and to participate in international projects and international student exchange programmes. You have the opportunity to study at renowned music schools abroad. Our international partners consist of over forty excellent conservatoires in Europe, the United States and Asia. In addition to these international partners, the Prince Claus Conservatoire also has other contacts throughout the world. Many of our lecturers and guest lecturers also come from abroad.

International studentsAll international students are advised to commence the application procedure for a scholarship to finance their studies as early as possible. An application for a visa takes some time, so it is important that you submit your application as early as possible to the dean of your school.

Exchange studentsIf you want to study abroad for a short period, the Exchange Programmeof Prince Claus Conservatoire might appeal to you. Check page 17 for more information.

Prince Claus ConservatoirePrince Claus devoted himself to the international significance of art and culture in a European and global perspective. He was an unconventional role model in many respects. His innovative vision on art education, particularly on the special significance of music was striking.

History of Prince Claus ConservatoireThe Prince Claus Conservatoire started back in 1858 as a music school. In the 19th century professionalizing orchestra musicians was regarded as very important. In 1862, the Groningse Orkestvereniging (Groningen Orchestra Society) was founded, the herald of the North Netherlands Symphony Orchestra. During a long period of time the orchestra and the music school were connected. The conductor of the orchestra was also the director of the music school. The first director striving after a conservatoire in Groningen was Peter van Anrooy. The next director, Clemens Schröder founded the basis for professional training of musicians. In 1925, the first diplomas in the musical profession were granted, followed by acknowledgement by the state in 1935. Director Jan van ‘t Hoff achieved the status of Music Lyceum (High School) for the music school. Director Willem Goedhart succeeded in transforming the lyceum into a conservatoire. In 1966 the conservatoire was acknowledged by the state. After merging with the conservatoire in Leeuwarden in 1990, and a merger of Universities of Applied Sciences a couple of years later, the North Netherlands Conservatoire was founded. In 2006 the conservatoire, which is now part of Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen, was given the name Prince Claus Conservatoire, in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen, Beatrix.

Something for you?If you are considering studying Classical Music, you

choose an instrument for life. A hobby you probably have

pursued for years. You are extremely driven, you want to

achieve the highest possible musical level and you want

to become a professional classical musician. Then,

studying Classical Music is something for you.

Your future careerAfter graduation you can work as a performing musician in an ensemble, in an orchestra or as a soloist. Perhaps it is your ambition to play in a renowned symphony orchestra or in one of the Dutch professional military ensembles, or you may wish to become a member of a professional or semiprofessional chamber choir. Many of our graduates combine playing chamber music with teaching at a music school, or they give private lessons. Some perform solo in international concerts.

Whatever your future path is going to be, at the Prince Claus Conservatoire you will be trained to become a versatile musician at a high level. If you also studied for a teaching qualification, you can work at a music school or as a private teacher. Most graduates are truly self-employed, pursuing ‘portfolio careers’ combining performance with teaching.

MusicClassical Music

Develop your talent

The conservatoire offers you many great opportunities, such as playing solo with a chamber orchestra or a string ensemble. Studying hard, gaining lots of experience, listening to music often, getting taught by different teachers and learning to play many styles of music help you to develop your talent.

“Playing the violin is what I love. I prefer

to play music with other musicians.

That is why I am so happy to be able to

study at the Prince Claus Conservatoire.

You always fulfill a different role in an

ensemble. This way, you meet new people

and learn about new music styles and

musical concepts. That is how you

become part of a beautiful whole.”

Top new York jazz musicians teach in Groningen

Using the slogan ‘New York comes to Groningen’, the Prince Claus Conservatoire offers jazz education based on the expertise of the jazz scene in New York. It is the only conservatoire in Europe to do this. You receive lessons every week from one of the New York jazz lecturers: Don Braden (tenor saxophone), Gene Jackson (drums), Alex Sipiagin (trumpet), JD Walter (vocals), David Berkman (piano), Joris Teepe (bass), Robin Eubanks (trombone), Freddie Bryant (guitar). These courses cover a wide range of subjects such as composition, ensembles, jazz history, and theory. You will follow courses irrespective the instrument you play. During these four years you will be taught not only by the international staff but also by our regular Dutch staff.

Programme outlineYou start performing publicly from day one. The emphasis is on theory, although this relates to how you can apply this during performances. You will also learn to play the piano to understand the theory. You participate in studio projects and you will follow courses in jazz arranging and composition. Your main instrument is always the focus throughout your entire study program. In addition to your private lessons, you play in ensembles (Jazz, Fusion, Latin, Big Band and Soul Band). We organize a study trip to New York every year. The didactical subjects and musical entrepreneurship are offered in the second and third year during which work placements play a major role. At the end of the fourth year you will complete your studies with a final concert showing the musical vision that you have developed.

9Jazz

Page 10: Hanze Brochure

Something for you?You are fascinated by the overall coherence of

compositions and you have an artistic vision of how to

interpret them. You like to work with a large group of

people and you like to take responsibility as a leader. It

challenges you to stimulate, motivate and guide musicians

or choir members to perform as good as possible in their

playing or singing together. You have been a member of

a wind orchestra or choir for years.

If this describes you, you are precisely the person bands and choirs are looking for to conduct them. In that case, the study programme Choir Conductor or Wind and Brass Band Conducter is for you. You can opt for a four-year bachelor degree, or a two-year Associate degree (Wind and Brass Band only).

Your future career ‘Bands are screaming for conductors’. This was the headline of an article on the Conductor study programme of the Prince Claus Conservatoire in a regional newspaper. It is becoming

Choir Conductor/Wind and Brass Band Conductor

increasingly difficult for wind and brass orchestras to find qualified conductors. There is also a great shortage of good choir conductors. In short, a promising career awaits you. On graduation you will be able to independently compile, practice and perform programmes with choirs and/or wind and brass orchestras of varying levels.

“One of the highlights during my

study is the annual project week

‘Size Conducting’. During this week

students get the opportunity to

conduct three of the best Dutch

orchestras and to learn from

top conductors.”

Main subjectsWind and Brass Band Conducting: Wind Band Conducting, Wind Band Theory, instrumentation, instrumental subsidiary, projects/ master classes and workshops.

Choir Conducting: Choir Conducting, Italian language, subsidiary vocals, practical choir, projects/ master classes and workshops.

Programme outlineThe main part of your study programmeinvolves acquiring sound theoretical knowledge and developing practical skills. For a conductor this means, for example, developing your musical imagination in subjects such as general music theory, practical harmony, ear training and rhythm. This is, of course, presented in such a way to support your ultimate goal: to be a conductor. The main phase of the study programme is very practice-oriented. You will work with ensembles within

the and with various external orchestras. You participate in workshops given by authoritative guest teachers such as: David King, Ivan Meijlemans, Henk Meutgeert and Maurice Hamers. In years two to four you pursue your work placement with one of the many choirs or orchestras established in the North Netherlands. After four years you conclude your studies by conducting your final concert. Some students opt for conducting as a second main subject, after they have completed the propaedeutic year for an instrumental or vocal main subject.

Associate degree in Wind and Brass Band ConductingAre you already the conductor of a wind or brass band? Have you ever taken the assistant conductor programme but want to do more, and know that you can? Are you already a professional musician in another discipline but wish to extend your scope of activity into wind and brass band conducting? Then our unique, two-year programme is definitely for you. You can study for the officially accredited Associate degree in

Wind and Brass Band Conducting qualification. Once you have gained the Associate degree, if you wish, you can go straight on studying for another two years in the bachelor’s programme, leading to the full teaching qualification as a wind and brass band conductor for all divisions.

Programme outline

Size Conducting

Every year, the Prince Claus Conservatoire organizes the large international project ‘Size Conducting’. It is a week full of lectures, master classes and workshops with well-known conductors and the best orchestras. Each edition has a different theme, such as: Dutch Size Conducting, Spanish Size Conducting and Full Size Conducting.

Programme outline

Main subjectsMain subjects offered are: Composition, Songwriting, Composition and Sound Design for Film and Media, Production.

Programme outlineThe main part of your study programme involves acquiring sound theoretical knowledge and developing practical skills. Classes cover subjects like composition, arranging, songwriting and studio production. You learn about music management and you will be involved in compositions and sound design for film and media. Therefore you spend a great deal of your studies in studios at the Conservatoire, where you carry out assignments in the large multitrack studio or on the smaller digital work sets. The unique collaborative arrangement with the Jazz and Classical Music departments means that your compositions can be performed immediately. This gives you the unique opportunity to acquire practical experience.

From year three on, you can opt for one of the graduation specializations. You will conduct a final project in your fourth year. In short, an extremely varied programmeawaits you, which will be presented to you in tutorials, workshops, practical classes, individual tuition and projects.

“We get to know many different styles of music and we compose in our own studio at the conservatoire.”

Your future careerGraduates work within a combination of arranging, composing and producing. Your arrangements may be heard in concert halls or at home on the CD player. You can work, for example, at a sound and audio-visual studio, or at a theatre. On the one hand, you will notice in professional practice that you work independently a lot, regardless of whether you are composing, arranging or producing. On the other hand though, you will have to work together with all sorts of people during productions. In this ever-changing field, you need to develop knowledge and skills quickly and on your own initiative.

13

Page 14: Hanze Brochure

Something for you?Do you have a broad orientation in music? Do you like to

share your knowledge, experiences and especially your

enthusiasm for music with others? If so, then the Music

in Education study programme is for you.

Your future careerAfter graduation you have obtained a grade one teaching qualification which enables you to take up teaching in various institutes including music schools, primary schools, secondary schools, senior secondary vocational schools and in higher professional education.

Music in Education

You may give lessons at a music school that supports individual lessons, or teach music at secondary school level but you will also be qualified to teach the subject Culture & the Arts I. You can also become a music consultant. In this function, you advise primary school teachers on giving music lessons. It turns out that, in addition to the above educational activities, graduates develop careers in many different directions. They work for organizations providing educational services, they set up their own businesses or they work for local radio stations. You can, therefore, work in a wide range of areas.

Programme outline

Main subjectsThe main subjects offered are: Methodology, didactics, pedagogy, development musical hearing, arranging, main musical subject, history of pop and jazz music, non Western music, vocals, song accompanying, choir.

Programme outlineThe study programme has two components: music and education. The music components will help you to become a musician who can place music within a broad context. The main subject is designed to train students musically. The broader context is determined by, in addition to the main subject, giving the student practical courses in singing, ensemble conducting, and guitar, drums and piano. You will also develop your musical skills in workshops and practical classes. The study programme covers all sorts of music styles both at theoretical and practical level: from classical music to pop and world music. The educational component covers didactics, methodology, general psychology and pedagogy.

Work placementWork placement forms a prominent part of your study programme. This component runs throughout all study years. The work placement locations are very diverse. Another important course is Culture & the Arts. Since a qualified music teacher can also teach the secondary school subject Culture & the Arts, attention is given to various forms of art, for example drama and painting, during tutorials, projects and workshops. The study programme combines theory and practice. Therefore you are going to follow lessons in ear training, music theory, music history, arranging, and music information technology. Having completed your main subject, you will concentrate on your graduation project. You have to write an article on a self-chosen subject and present this to the examination board. You will present this to the examination board.

“During the ‘Intensive Project’ the third year students Music in Education visited Leipzig. Together with participants from other European conservatoires we discussed music education and we taught music at a local primary school.”Dorie van Zuijlekom

A distinctive feature of this study programme is that you intensively work together with other students. These can be students from the same year as you, but also students from other years within the study programme, students from other disciplines (e.g. Jazz and Classical Music) or bachelor or master students from other study programme in the fine and performing arts.

In the interfaculty centre a collaborative project is executed each year for students from the teacher training programme in art, music and drama.

Research Group lifelong learning in Music

In collaboration with the professional practice professor Smilde researches how to prepare students for the many facets of their future professional practice. The research looks into what consequences a changing society and music practice have for the skills you need as a musician today, and what this means for higher music education. This research will lead to modifications of the conservatoire curriculum to these developments, which will increase your opportunities in the professional practice. This way, as a student you learn what lifelong learning means for you. The Research Group is linked to the Prince Claus Conservatoire and is part of the Centre of Applied Research and Innovation Art & Society of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen.

For further information about the Research Group, see www.lifelonglearninginmusic.org.

institution and discuss the possibilities for an exchange with us. All applicants are subject to an assessment of their documents and have to send in a CD with a sample of their playing.

English study programmes and language skillsThe study programmes of the Classical and Jazz Departments are offered mainly in English. In order to be admitted to the first year, a demonstrable English language skill level IELTS 5 is required. This corresponds to a TOEFL score of 550, or a CEF score B2. For a number of educational units in years 2, 3 and 4, an IELTS level 6 is an entry requirement. During the intake procedure, the conservatoire determines the foreign students’ English language skill level by a test.

Students with a skill level lower than IELTS 5 are expected to take part in an English language course before entering our conservatoire. Courses are offered by the Centre for Language and Culture at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen, but we strongly advise you to start achieving IELTS 5 in your home country.

Entrance requirements Entrance requirements All applicants must perform at the entrance exams, held in May and June of every year. This exam consists of two parts: a theory/ aural test, and an audition. Each part is approximately 30 minutes in duration and both take place on the same day. It is most likely you will hear the same day if you can be admitted to the Conservatoire. In special cases it is possible to send in a DVD instead of doing an audition. For more information about the admission requirements and the enrolment procedure, check our website,www.hanzegroningen.eu/admissionpcc.

Skype audition for non-European studentsIf you are a non-European student you can ask for an audition on DVD. Your dvd-audition will be followed by a skype-audition. The content of the skype-audition will be based on the DVD. With these two auditions the head of the department makes a decision about your admission.

You’ll feel at home in Groningen

Holland or the netherlands? When most people think of Holland, the name more commonly used for the Netherlands, the first things that usually spring to mind are tulips, cheese, wooden shoes, windmills, DJ Tiësto and Van Gogh. Also from a business perspective, Holland is quite renowned. Its famous merchant history, think of the 17th century Golden Age of Discovery, translates into many of today’s multinationals such as Royal Dutch Shell, Philips, Unilever, Heineken and ING Bank. Yet, it is not only a country full of windmills and global businesses but also a great place to live. Attractive features of the country are its historic towns and villages, the beautiful and varied landscapes and the mild climate. It attracts visitors from all over the world, who find that people are friendly and open-minded. They find it pleasant and modern, life is comfortable and everything is well-organised.

Groningen Situated in the north of the Netherlands, Groningen is a young - half of the Groningen population is under 35! – and vibrant city with a picturesque city centre, surrounded by beautiful countryside. The city is not only historically interesting, it also has impressive modern architecture, such as the eye-catching Groninger Museum, which attracts a lot of international attention.

Groningen: a student city With more than 50,000 students (out of 190,000 inhabitants), Groningen is justly known as one of the best cities for studying in the Netherlands. There are plenty of study opportunities, with over 175 study programmes at the two main universities: the University of Groningen and Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen. The city also has great shops and a buzzing nightlife. Moreover, Groningen was even one of the cities voted “safest city in the Netherlands” and has extremely high standards

Higher education in the netherlands

The education system in the Netherlands is known for its high quality in education and research as well as its international study environment. With 1,560 international study programmes and courses it has the largest offer of continental Europe.

The Netherlands has two main types of higher education: research universities and universities of applied sciences. Research universities focus on the independent practice of research oriented work in an academic or professional setting. Universities of applied sciences offer professional programmes in the applied arts and sciences that prepare students for specifi c careers. Both types of universities offer bachelor and master programmes.

At Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen, all programmes include work placements that provide the students with practical work experience, which is much appreciated by future employers.

Getting around Dutch transport is affordable and effective. The railway system is simple, fast, extensive and reliable, so there is no need to have a car. For shorter distances, the bicycle is by far the most popular mode of transport. In fact, there are said to be more bicycles than people in Holland, and twice as many bicycles as cars! For travelling abroad, the Netherlands is ideally situated. Holland is often called “The Gateway to Europe” since London, Paris, Prague, Copenhagen or Rome are all within easy reach by car, train or the award-winning Schiphol airport, one of Europe’s major transport hubs. One can also travel to cities such as Berlin, Brussels or Hamburg. Groningen is approximately two hours away from Schiphol Airport and the German Bremen Airport, for which there is a regular bus or train service.

Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen (Hanze UAS)Founded in 1798, Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen, is the oldest university of applied sciences in the Netherlands. With a student body of over 25,000 and approximately 2,700 staff members, it is also the largest university of applied sciences in the north of the Netherlands and is widely respected internationally. Furthermore, it is a knowledge institute in which applied research and innovation are integrated into the various curricula of the institution.

Co-operation with businessesHanze UAS has a strong network of international businesses and organisations. All programmes focus on gaining work experience by means of two separate work placements which add value to our students’ resume once graduated. In addition, many lecturers have extensive experience in their professional fields, enabling them to help bring real cases to the classroom.

Career perspectiveThe practice-oriented and project-based educational system is why many students succeed in finding employment quickly after they graduate.

Sports facilities If you like sports, you can join the ACLO, which is the student sports centre of Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen and the University of Groningen. For approximately € 50,- per year, you can buy an ACLO card, which gives you access to many sports courses and to numerous sports facilities, such as the gym, climbing centre or swimming pool. The sports centre provides excellent sports facilities, 7 days a week. For more information on the range of sports offered, visit www.aclosport.nl.
