NATIONAL BOATING SAFETY WEEK IS MAY 21—27

May (Opening Day) is a good time to brush up on your boating safety knowledge so you “know before you go”. Here’s a simple pre-cruising season test: Go out on your boat this weekend, identify every navigational aid you see and affirm its meaning. Or, better yet, identify them on a chart (so you see every one). If you can’t do that, it’s time to brush up on your rules of the road knowledge with a boating safety course. A FREE boating safety course can be found at www.BoatUS.com/online course. And don’t forget to check out LIYC’s new boating education assistance program for courses offered by the Friday Harbor Power Squadron. See Lane Langford’s email for details (or go straight to the source [email protected].

HAPPY 40TH BIRTHDAY, LIYC

This is the Commodore’s Corner by Jim Lett from June 2002 recounting LIYC’s 2002 Opening Day. It’s just as relevant today as it was 16 years ago: “Red , White and Blue. Rain, Sleet and Hail.

That could have been the slogan for this year’s Opening Day of Yachting season. That weather is pretty typical of most of our Lopez Opening Days. But this year was a little different. WE HAD A PARADE!!! We actually had a boat parade! (Yes, I remember, last year Joe Golberg went out for a spin in Alien but one boat doth not a parade make.) Jon Larson (in the sheriff’s boat complete with blue flashing lights) led the horn blowing, flag waving, song singing line of about 16 boats around the bay and safely back to our Islander slips just before the next big gusts of wind hit the beach. It was glorious! Granted the “throngs” of well-wishers lining the shore were sparse and far between, but for a few minutes on Saturday afternoon, our little parade was as grand and exalted as any of the big Seattle clubs partying through the Montlake Cut. It was wonderful! Wonderful, too, is how I feel when I think about how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful place with such a great group of people. How lucky we are to be free to be patriotic, to make speeches, to gather, to sing, to parade. How lucky we are to be safe and at peace on our island while so many others around the world are not so fortunate. How wonderful to look forward to another season of cruising these spectacular waters. How lucky I am to be an American.

Jim”

AND THE TIMES, THEY ARE A CHANGIN’ OR ARE THEY???

With so many new members joining the Lopez Island Yacht Club in the last few years, the “Newsline” wanted to know how (or if) our club was evolving. Here’s what we found: 2000* 2018 # of members 147 175

# of members from 2000 22 still in LIYC in 2018

# of founding/charter members still in LIYC in 2018 3

% of sail boaters 17% 22%

In fact, within 1 year, members were required to sail a figure-eight singlehanded and tell an unbelievable but true sea story. Also in 1978 , 24 countrywide sailors entered LIYC’s first sailboat race, the Rag Sailors’ Regatta. As more power boaters joined over the years, the sailing races were dropped. But 2012 marked the revival of Lopez’ sailing prowess with the Introduction of the 2012 Lopez Island Classic Yacht Race organized by Russ Johnson. That race is still going strong as the
