A Letter From Our Members Thank you to Dave and Staff for planning the "Hot Havana Nights" Club party we attended on Saturday, August 26th. What a perfect night it was for fun, food, and drinks around the lighted pool with great music provided by a spectacular steel drum band, Soca Jukebox, from Kansas City. A fine group of talented musicians who played a variety of music. Fun! Chef John prepared a wonderful buffet of Cuban cuisine served with several specialty drinks by Stephanie. This was a memorable function we hope will be brought back to our Club. For those who didn't attend this year, you missed a good one! Don't miss it next year!

Many of the golfers by now may have seen the new addition to the landscape bed near #9 tee box. The beautiful wind sculpture, by artist Lyman Whitaker, was approved by the Board of Directors and purchased with donated funds. It is a tribute to Elaine O’Connor and an enhancement to the course to be enjoyed by everyone. Elaine was a much-loved and passionate golfer at the Manhattan Country Club for many years. She moved to Kansas City 4 years ago and passed away this May after a courageous battle with cancer. Elaine was a moving force in the planning and development of the waterfall feature and worked diligently on many golf tournaments and club committees.   She also quietly helped Diane with landscape planting work in flower beds all around the club.

Thank you to all who contributed to the Elaine O’Connor Memorial.

Happy School Year Everyone!

Students are back, traffic is terrible, and football is coming!

Several staff members are returning from from their summer internships, study abroad adventures, and trips home to see family. I hope you will recognize them and welcome them back to the club. We are so happy to have them back!

Though the summer is coming to an end, with school being back in session, we are getting busy in different ways. The boardroom has been a very popular place, as of late. For those of you who host meetings for your businesses, please remember you can always bring your work here for a change of scenery and an opportunity for your colleagues and staff to see and experience the club.

Chef and I are working on new menus for the Fall. We should be rolling those out in the middle of September. If you have been around the club the last couple weeks, you might have

already tried some of the new items. Chef has been sneaking them into our weekly specials!

On Wednesday, October 18th, I am planning a Vendor’s Showcase for local artist and vendors to present their wares in the ballroom. The idea being: members come and enjoy a pleasant gathering, while observing work from local artists, tasting some delicious food, and hopefully getting some Christmas shopping done. There will be hors d'oeuvres, as well as wine and spirit sampling. The event will be free of charge and I encourage you to bring guests. Hopefully, you will see things of interest to purchase for your loved ones. If anyone

has a product or knows anyone who might, please send them my way to discuss options for presenting. I have a few booths left!

A Letter From Our Head Golf Professional

August was a great month with little to no hot days, as well as one crazy day of weather with the eclipse and thunderstorms!  Hopefully everyone got out and caught a glimpse of it! September is such a busy month with football starting, the hunting season beginning, school in full swing, and perfect weather to be outside. What more can we ask for? Yes, Mark will be punching the greens after Labor Day, but when the weather cooperates we will be back to new in two weeks! Hopefully you will get out and enjoy your golf course this month! Future plans: you might want to put Mark's Revenge on your calendar! October 8th is the date and it’s a four person scramble. All proceeds from this event will benefit Mark's turf team and help with the irrigation! We have had a lot of small issues that have really added up this summer from leaky sprinkler heads to pipes breaking and Mark could use all of our help to support his team! Again, Thanks to Mark and his team for doing such a great job this year!

A Letter From Our Grounds Superintendent

September is here and with it comes some needed cooler weather.  We plan to start over seeding the fairways and cool season tees starting as soon as possible, weather pending. We will be closing one hole at a time to complete the over seeding on that hole. This process is time consuming and we appreciate your cooperation. Greens aerification will begin on Tuesday, September 5th and 6th. We will be fertilizing greens a week before and directly after aerification to help promote a quick recovery during this process. This year, as many of you have seen, we have been working on irrigation repairs. It seems as though every time one leak is fixed, another appears. Our system is old and built in the early 90’s, but we are continuing to try and keep up on them. Also with school starting our staff availability has changed. We are in the process of hiring a couple more part time employees to help out during this busy fall season.  With cooler weather this is one of the most enjoyable times to get out and golf. The flower beds on the course are looking spectacular this season. A big “Thanks” to Dian and Coleen for their tremendous efforts!  As always, if anyone has any questions or comments contact us.  Thanks.
