The vision of this congregation shall be to establish
and maintain an institution that creates an
all-embracing egalitarian participatory
Conservative synagogue that serves as a Jewish
spiritual, cultural, and educational center for
children, adults and families. The synagogue will
foster Jewish identity and values, promote the
observance of Jewish traditions and enhance the
spiritual growth of our members; to create a
comfortable social environment for our members; to
involve the congregation in issues of Jewish concern
and interest.
Fun time for all who attended the
Sukkot Celebration at the home of
Rabbi Hal and Jena
3 President’s Corner
It was so wonderful to see so many of you during the High Holiday season. Once again, I’m reminded
of the strength and participatory nature of our community. Sitting on the bimah in my first year as
President and seeing so many of you engaged in prayer and being an active part of our service
through honors such as ark openings, readings, and aliyot made my holiday experience so much
stronger.
So many of our congregants were involved in every aspect of our High Holiday planning and
implementation. From the setup and breakdown, to organizing our first break-fast, to building our
Sukkah, and planning our Simchat Torah celebration.
I cannot express enough appreciation from the Executive Committee and Board of Governors to the
many individuals who ensured that our High Holiday Season was so wonderful.
To Rabbi Hal for the uplifting and inspirational services and the meaningful and moving sermons.
To our Hazzanim: Ron Fink, Sheila Pour, Mayer Grob, and Art Todras
To our Torah readers: Michael Kornstein, Daniel Elmakis, Leo Shoval, and Erin Samuels
To our Haftarah readers: Mayer Grob, Sheila Pour, Fran Todras, and Sam Richardson
To Rachel Schwartz for your inspirational speech regarding your time in Israel
To Lisa Roday for your Yom Kippur appeal
To our Ushers: Lori Shiffman, Dana Gwaltney, Amanda Braun, Scott Lyons, David Jaffe, Rachel Mollen,
Missy Bunce, Barry Green, Richard Malkman, Sandy Mayer, Fran Todras, Jeff Scharf, Jim Cohen, Lisa
Roday, Joe Cheslock, Michael Schoenhaut, Rick Wiener, and Sonya Brockstein
To our Shofar Blowers: Rabbi Hal, Stan Corn, Daniel Elmakis, Art Todras, Marc Pinsky, Rob Buncher,
and Harrison Cohen
To Art Todras and Sandy Mayer for organizing all the honors
To our Education Coordinator, Alison Litvin, for creating such fun and engaging children’s services
To Barry Green for providing Apples and Honey; To Michael Schoenhaut for providing emergency food
To Marilyn Wiener for organizing the Yizkor Book; To Rick and Marilyn Wiener for purchasing new
carpet for the High Holiday platform; To Daniel Elmakis, Barry Green and Harry Kirschbaum for
installing the carpet
To Sandy Mayer, Fran Todras, and Sheila Pour for coordinating the Break Fast
To those that set up and broke down for the Holidays and building of the Sukkah: Rick Wiener, Ron
Fink, Robert Oberhand, Al Sherman, Norm Geller, Barry Green, Art Todras, Fran Todras, Ray Farhi,
Sonya Brockstein, Harry Kirschbaum, Tomomi Rubin, Ethan Greenburg, Tom McClish, David Jaffe, and
Franklin Levin
To the Youth Education Committee for preparing the Simchat Torah dinner
To our office staff, Wanda Schweiger and Jacqui Shepperson, who do so many things behind the
scenes as well as greet all of us and our guests
It truly takes a village, and I’m so happy to be a part of this one. I’m looking forward to 5780 with my
congregational family and excited for what the future will hold for Congregation Or Atid.

Helen and Sam Kornblau Religious School News
This October students continued a new tradition, celebrating Challahween during the last class of
the month. We practiced the challah blessing and noshed on the
delicious bread while reading stories of Jewish folklore. We learned
about Og the Giant, the Unfinished Corner of Creation, the Golem of
Prague, and more, and we reimagined the stories into modern
legends. We practiced the PaRDeS methods of Torah study,
identifying the direct, implied, and hidden meanings of each story,
and we compared them to the Torah stories we have already read.
These folk tales help us explain and symbolize elements of Jewish
culture, encouraging students to explore beyond what we already
know about Judaism. And a little challah doesn’t hurt!
November is a quiet time of year, students and teachers have settled into school routines and the
High Holidays are behind us. There is still time until the winter festivities, and in the Kornblau
Religious School students have observed the autumn transition within the school’s own Kindness
Garden, decorated with student’s artwork and showcasing how the leaves change colors from a
bright green, “ ,” ָירֹוק to warm shades of red, “ ,” ָאדֹום orange, “ ,”ָכתֹום and yellow, “ .”ָצהֹוב Before winter
approaches, teachers and students alike are enjoying the garden as a unique and interactive
learning tool, connecting with nature and taking the time to praise God for creating such beauty in
this world. Some of God’s most amazing miracles happen in our own backyards!
Back in the classroom, students in the 6th-7th grade B’Nei Mitzvah class have embarked on a unit
studying Global Jewry. Learning about Sephardic, Mizrahi, and Ashkenazi traditions and history
through interactive and hands-on lessons, students have explored Jewish culture around the world
through video interviews, music and storytelling, a flavorful cooking class on spices, and a field trip
presentation with Congregation Or Ami at the VA Holocaust Museum, to hear author Karen Batshaw
speak about the Greek Jewish experience during the Holocaust. Families were then invited to a
special group tour of the museum, led by Executive Director Samuel Asher.
The Kornblau Religious School is always open to interested families who are looking to start,
continue, or explore their own Jewish Journey. In class, students discover new ways to interact with
Jewish holidays and traditions, Israeli culture, Hebrew and Tefillah, and the weekly parsha. For more
information about the school, and to schedule a tour, please contact Education Coordinator, Alison
Litvin, at [email protected], or call Congregation Or Atid at 804 740 - 4747.
