Our unique rail and sail adventure begins with a leisurely, 2-night cruise to Sydney aboard the 2000-passenger, floating resort, Sun Princess. There’ll be time to laze in a poolside deckchair, gaze at the passing coastline and live it up with fine cuisine and Broadway-style stage shows. Sailing into beautiful Sydney Harbour is, of course, always a spectacle. Not far from the cruise terminal is the historic Grace Hotel where we’ll spend 2 nights in the heart of the city. Built by the Grace Brothers in the 1920s as a showpiece for their successful retail business, the deluxe hotel has been beautifully restored to its former glory, making it one of Sydney’s most prominent historical landmarks, with its striking, neo-Gothic architecture and art deco interiors. A free day allows you time to explore and maybe sneak in some early Christmas shopping. Next morning, wake to another glorious day in Sydney and

get ready for our memorable cruise on the sparkling harbour aboard the 1874-built sailing ship, James Craig. Enjoy morning tea and drink in the views as the volunteer crew explain the square rigger’s colourful history and the harbour’s notable landmarks.

From Sydney’s Central Station, our journey travels north aboard the charming, heritage 621/721 rail motor, an Indian red-coloured train built in 1962 by the NSW Government for regional, commuter services that ran until 2007. Perhaps you may recall travelling aboard one of these comfortable, character-filled trains once yourself. Unlike modern trains, the rail motor has windows you can open to let in the views and fresh air – perfect for daydreaming as the every-changing scenery rolls by. We stop for morning tea in the Hunter Valley at the Rail Motor Society’s base in Paterson, where dedicated volunteers will explain their restoration work and showcase the other rail motors they are working on. After lunch in Taree, we journey north to the friendly, jacaranda city of Grafton, where we’ll transfer to our overnight motel ahead of dinner together in a riverside hotel. Next morning it’s back aboard our rail motor as we complete our round-trip getaway back to Brisbane’s Roma Street Station, via a morning tea stop in Casino.
