NEWS & HIGHLIGHTSSTREET DATE: DECEMBER 9, 2014

The year may be coming to an end, but there are still lots of great new releases on the way. December’s offering leads off with a very special set from Jordi Savall on Alia Vox. Savall directs the Capella Reial de Catalunya and Le Concert des Nations on a disc of Magnificats and Concertos by J.S. Bach and Vivaldi (p.6). The package includes a DVD (in PAL format) with video content mirroring the disc’s program. Bach is also the featured composer on a new two SACD set of the complete Brandenburg Concertos from Channel Classics featuring the acclaimed English chamber ensemble Florilegium (p.11). Vocal music fans will delight in the second solo disc for the Aparté label by the superb countertenor Xavier Sabata. I Dilletanti features music by a selection of Venice’s non-professional composers (p.7). Orange Mountain proudly presents the first release of the complete piano Études of Philip Glass. Recently completed, these fascinating works are given definitive performances by Maki Namekawa (p.16). Leading off our non-classical releases, jazz trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf teams up with rapper-poet Oxmo Puccino for Au pays d’Alice, a jazz musical based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland (p.25). Last but not least, Howe Records’s latest soundtrack release features Rosewater — the directorial début of Daily Show host Jon Stewart. Howard Shore’s atmospheric score is paired with songs by Leonard Cohen, Mahdyar Aghajani and 25 Band (p.26).

Anonymous 4 sings songs of The Civil WarAnonymous 4 and special guest Bruce Molsky commemorate the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War with songs that were in the air in the year 1865. It includes ballads and choruses originally intended for the stage and the parlor, as well as songs and instrumental tunes from the hills and back roads of America. They portray the highly emotional, personal stories of soldiers, widows and others who lived through one of the bloodiest wars in American history.

IMPORTAlessandro Piccinini, a contemporary of Monteverdi and Frescobaldi, hailed from a Bolognese family of lutenists that made its mark on Italian musical life for over one and a half centuries. Piccinini’s two books of lute works are primarily influenced by the

emergent Italian instrumental music, but French and Spanish influences can also be clearly heard. On the present recording, Mónica Pustilnik performs selections from both books.

IMPORTOf all the fascinating, little-known figures who populated the world of Italian song in the early 17th century, Giulio Sant Pietro de’ Negri is one of the most interesting. His songs include startlingly original and interesting settings, even by the

experimental standards of the time. This collection, featuring the ensemble Faenza conducted by Marco Horvat, samples some of the composer’s finest works.

IMPORTThis release from Albion Records highlights both Vaughan Williams’s skill in setting English poetry and prose to music and his abiding love of the violin, which he described as his “musical salvation.” It features song settings of both John Bunyan and

Robert Louis Stevenson performed by baritone Roland Wood alongside familiar and less well-known works for violin, arranged on this occasion for violin and piano and played by Matthew Trusler and Iain Burnside.

IMPORTThis recording explores the various musical themes used in films to express romance, nobility, adventure and hope. Pianist Jane Chee plays a selection of clever and illuminating arrangements of music from a wide range of films including Somewhere in Time,

Gone with the Wind, Titanic, Out of Africa, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Gladiator, Braveheart and The Lord of the Rings.

IMPORT Following on the success of his début album Bad Guys, countertenor Xavier Sabata presents I Dilettanti. This recording features works by a selection of Venice’s many non-professional composers. Despite their “dilletante” status, some of these composers, including Benedetto Marcello and Emanuele d’Astorga, left their own very personal mark on the history of music. IMPORTBrazilian pianist Guiomar Novaes was described by her teacher Isidore Philipp as, “by far the best pupil he had ever nursed to the concert stage.” Novaes shot to fame as a teenager and immediately became a star pianist, particularly in the USA where she settled. She recorded well into the LP era but by

common consent her greatest recordings are considered to be the 78-rpm discs she made in her youth. Here, for the first time, all are reissued together.

IMPORTWanda Landowska achieved such fame for her revival of the harpsichord that it is sometimes forgotten that she was also a fine pianist. This set brings together, for the first time, all her recordings on that instrument. In their understanding of

period style, and above all in their ability to get to the emotional heart of the matter, these recordings reveal Landowska’s playing to be as valid now, in our historically informed time, as it ever was.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThe choral music of Johannes Brahms spans much of his career as a composer. Its influences range from folk music to contrapuntal masterworks of the Renaissance and Baroque. Musicology has in its infancy in the Romantic period, and Brahms was fascinated with ‘old’ music, especially the works of Bach. This illuminating selection of a cappella choral music features the supreme talents of the Swedish Radio Choir led by Peter Dijkstra.

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDLike many of Bach’s sets, such as the Goldberg Variations or The Well-Tempered Clavier, the Brandenburg Concertos form a kind of master anthology — a demonstration of all the imaginable possibilities inherent in a certain musical form. IMPORTOriginally released between 1975 to 1991 on the now-defunct Calliope label, André Isoir’s recordings of the complete organ works of Bach have been unanimously acclaimed by both the press and the public. La Dolce Volta now offers these landmark recordings (unavailable since 2008),

completely remastered, in a deluxe, specially priced boxed set. The set includes a 152 page, full color booklet rich with photos and information about the music and the recordings.

Two decades in the making, the result was an anthology comprising twenty exquisite Etudes that stands both as a monument to Glass’s deeply personal relationship with the piano and as embodiment of his evolving style. IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDSpanning a period of more than three and a half decades, Shostakovich’s fifteen String Quartets are a musical testament to the composer’s creative evolution. Their intimate and private nature stand in stark contrast to his symphonies. IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDFriedrich Gulda was an unusual personality. His performing career spanned both classical and jazz, and as a teacher, he was a tremendous influence on many of the 20th Century’s greatest pianists.

A fine performer in his own right, Gulda gave his Carnegie Hall début at the age of 20, and is considered one of the most important interpreters of the postwar period. This SACD remaster from Praga offers listeners a sampling of Gulda’s superb artistry.

IMPORTYvonne Lefébure (1898-1986) was a highly-regarded French pianist and teacher. She studied with Alfred Cortot at the Paris Conservatoire and had a long and successful concert career. She was the teacher of such luminaries as Dinu Lipatti,

IMPORTThe Berlin Philharmonic gave five concerts at the 1964 Salzburg Festival: under Karajan, Mehta, Sawallisch, Schuricht and Szell. Carl Schuricht took listeners back to a nearly forgotten golden age of orchestral playing. One has only to hear his

exquisite shaping of the exposition of the Adagio from Bruckner’s Symphony No.7 to realize what his ‘old school’ methods could achieve. This recording’s program also features an equally compelling reading of Mozart’s Prague Symphony.

IMPORT Emil Gilels was unjustly overshadowed by other famous pianists of his generation, particularly fellow-Soviet Sviatoslav Richter. His superb technique and interpretive skills are heard to great effect on this live recording with Karl Böhm and the Berlin

Philharmonic recorded in 1970 at the Salzburg Festival. Gilels was considered to be among the best Mozart pianists of the period. His elegant performance of the Piano Concerto No.27 is highlighted by Böhm’s masterful conducting.

years of retirement, Olivero returned to the stage at the request of Cilea to revive the work and thereafter she remained active in opera and concerts almost to the end of her life. This recording features a live performance made at the 1963 Edinburgh Festival.

IMPORTThis specially-priced set offers a portrait of the young German composer Johannes Boris Borowski. It focuses on a genre that is rarely found in contemporary music: the concerto. Although the instrumental style of playing may suggest a classical orientation, Borowski breaks with the concerto

tradition in new and unexpected ways. One concerto and one ensemble piece are contained on each of the discs in this set which features top interpreters of the international contemporary music scene.

IMPORTThe piano works for two pianos or piano four-hands united here by the Klavierduo Huber / Thomet have quite a few inner connections. Each, in its own way, breaks down aesthetic conventions and evokes vast historical and geographic horizons

while demanding the highest level of virtuosity from the performers. Featured works include Debussy’s En blanc et noir, Zimmermann’s Monologe and a four hand transcription of Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps penned by the composer.

DOMESTICSACD Hybrid/ Mono/ DSDFile in: JazzHank Mobley’s Second Message was recorded on July 27, 1956, just one week after its predecessor, Mobley’s Message. This six track quintet set features

three Mobley originals alongside three standards and first rate accompaniment from trumpeter Kenny Dorham, pianist Walter Bishop, Doug Watkins on bass and Art Taylor on percussion. Analogue Productions’s superb SACD remastering is housed in a miniature recreation of the original LP packaging.

DOMESTICSACD Hybrid/ Mono/ DSDFile in: JazzLush Life is one of the key albums in John Coltrane’s discography. It features his first recordings as sole leader and one of his first readings of a ballad, the

classic title track by Billy Strayhorn. The album was recorded in 1957 soon after Coltrane had spent six months playing with Thelonious Monk — a collaboration that had much to do with sharpening Coltrane’s harmonic conception and torrential attack.

DOMESTIC File in: SoundtrackThe feature film Rosewater marks the screenwriting and directorial debut of The Daily Show host Jon Stewart. A true story, the film is based on the New York Times best-selling memoir Then They Came for Me: A Family’s Story of Love, Captivity, and Survival, written by BBC journalist Maziar Bahari. It follows the story of Bahari’s imprisonment in Tehran in 2009 and his interrogation at the hands of a man he knew only as Rosewater. Accused of espionage while covering Iran’s elections for the BBC, Bahari was stunned to find among the government’s supposedly incriminating evidence personal photos from dinner parties, his Facebook posts, and his appearance in a segment on The Daily Show. This soundtrack recording features an original score by Howard Shore, coupled with tracks by Leonard Cohen and Persian musicians Mahdyar Aghajani and 25 Band.

IMPORTFile in: World/ Russia or ChristmasOn this release, the Red Army Choir sings traditional and orthodox Christmas songs. Even when singing such familiar music, the precision of the ensemble’s sound reveals the full mastery of the

choir’s vocal skills. Combined with a unique feeling for these carols’ arrangements, these performances remind the listener exactly why the Red Army Choir was one of the great artistic symbols of the Soviet era.

IMPORTFile in: World / MexicoReleased to coincide with the exhibition Mayas, Revelation of an Endless Time at Paris’s Quai Branly Museum, this disc features historic field-recordings made in the late sixties to the early seventies by

François Jouffa and Serge Roterman. Featured here are recordings not only by the Maya population but also the Totonac and Cora peoples. The art of music captured here shows a collective, functional, and also esoteric and sacred character.

IMPORTFile in: World / BosniaBosnia’s Amira Medunjanin is blessed with such an astonishingly rich and emotive voice that all else can seem to slow down when she sings the hauntingly beautiful songs of her Balkan homelands. On her fourth studio album, Silk & Stone, Amira again performs traditional songs from Serbia, Bosnia, Macedonia, Croatia and Montenegro. Although essentially a studio album, Amira and her two musical collaborators took the decision to record these tracks as live at Zagreb’s Lisinski Concert Hall.
