The charismatic virtuoso Midori takes on one of the pillars of the violin repertoire on her second release for Onyx. Her recording of Bach’s solo Sonatas & Partitas demonstrates not only Midori’s technical mastery but also her rich interpretive insight. Celebrate Independence Day this year with vocal fireworks from Stephen Layton and Polyphony. Their latest Hyperion release features a glorious selection of American choral works by Randall Thompson, Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland. Better known for focusing on unjustly neglected composers of the Renaissance, the extraordinary choir Cinquecento turns to the music of Orlande de Lassus for their new release on Hyperion. American pianist (and perennial audience favorite) Garrick Ohlsson proves once again that he is the master of the miniature with a new recording for Hyperion of works by Debussy, Bartók and Prokofiev. Prokofiev is also the focus of conductor Kirill Karabits’s third volume in his series of recordings of the composer’s colorful symphonies for Onyx. This month the Alia Vox label launches a new series called Diversa, which will explore neglected early music repertoire. The début release on Diversa features music of the Basque country performed by the Euskal Barrokensemble led by Enrike Solinís. Our top non-classical release marks the return of the legendary African supergroup Les Ambassadeurs. Their World Village EP entitled Rebirth presages a full album due in 2016.

IMPORT Born in 1901 in Warsaw, Simon Laks belonged to a group of Polish musicians and composers who banded together in Paris in the late 1920s as the Association des Jeunes Musiciens Polonais. Under the stewardship of Paderewski,

Szymanowski, Rubinstein, and Nadia Boulanger, it was considered the most important non-French music association in what was then the music capital of the world. This CD presents a collection of world-première recordings from the pre-war era that marked Laks’s breakthrough into the French music scene.

IMPORT Joachim Mendelson was born in Warsaw in 1892. Like nearly all Polish composers of his generation, he went to Paris in the 1920s and joined the Association des Jeunes Musiciens Polonais. In the mid-1930s, Mendelson accepted

a professorship at the Warsaw College of Music. After Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland, he was interned in the Warsaw ghetto, where he was murdered in 1943. Only five of his compositions survived. Four of these works from the late 1930s are recorded here for the first time.

IMPORT Mikis Theodorakis is a composer whose life and work are more closely connected with the vicissitudes of twentieth-century European political history than any other musician alive today. On July 29th, Theodorakis will celebrate his 90th birthday, and in honor of this occasion, Wergo presents two fascinating releases. East Of The Aegean harks back to the composer’s origins – he was born on the island of Chios in the eastern Aegean Sea. IMPORT Jörg-Peter Mittmann’s compositions approach music in the broader context of history and philosophy. This program performed by Ensemble Horizonte features pieces that are inspired by some of the greatest works of our

time – contemporary works forged on the building blocks of the past. Mit Bach borrows from Bach’s Cantata 147, Dona nobis pacem was inspired by Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony, Lamento echoes Monteverdi’s Lamento della Ninfa and Dem Unendlichen is based on Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder.

IMPORT As a clarinetist, Jörg Widmann is respectful of musical traditions – but as a composer, he calls them into question in radical ways. In many of his pieces, traditional tonal elements encounter an arsenal of newly developed techniques and

sounds. As a result, the relationship between the musical elements, whether historical or contemporary, is redefined. His five String Quartets, performed here by the Minguet Quartett, were written over an eight year period. They are independent pieces but can also be viewed as a large work in five movements.

Blending elements from salsa, jazz, soul, rock ‘n’ roll and the ancient art of the griots, the music of Les Ambassadeurs became a source of pride in West Africa, and placed African music firmly in the consciousness of music lovers everywhere.
