NEWS & HIGHLIGHTSSTREET DATE: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2015
The magical music of pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi — which lives on the border between classical music and the uncategorizable — has been enchanting listeners for over twenty years. Elements, his latest release, explores connections between science, spiritualism and the visual arts in a glorious disc of music that blends acoustic and electronic sounds. Steven Osborne, one of Hyperion’s formidable roster of virtuoso pianists, presents a charming album of music by Schubert that includes the evergreen Impromptus. Gramophone Label of the Year Channel Classics offers a new recording of Biber’s fascinating Rosary Sonatas featuring violinist Rachel Podger. The violin is also the star on violinist Isabelle Faust’s new release of Brahms sonatas for harmonia mundi and on two discs of Vivaldi concertos with James Ehnes and Amandine Beyer. Hyperion’s Romantic Cello Concerto series reaches volume seven with this month’s release featuring works by Wilhelm Fitzenhagen played by Alban Gerhardt. Fans of chamber music will rejoice over the latest release by the illustrious Takács Quartet — a disc featuring quartets by Janácek and Smetana. Channel Classics presents the début release by the Hamlet Piano Trio playing Piano Trios by Mendelssohn. The holiday season is right around the corner, so a new Christmas album from the superb chamber choir Stile Antico will be received with delight by listeners everywhere. The series of recordings based upon the liturgical calendar featuring the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge continues with a new disc focusing on the funeral service. Soprano Elizabeth Watts is the soloist on a disc of joyous and virtuosic music by Alessandro Scarlatti. In non-classical releases, Jazz guitarist Gilad Hekselman returns with a new Jazz Village release entitled Homes and world music superstar Alan Stivell presents a new concept album called AMzer.

IMPORT The Sibyls were mythical women of ancient times with the gift of prophecy. They were a favorite motif in the visual arts during the Renaissance: the best known are Michelangelo’s Sibyls in the ceiling frescoes of the Sistine
Chapel. Lasso’s Prophetiae Sibyllarum was composed at the Munich court of Duke Albrecht V. The Duke prohibited the work’s publication, thus making it the sole property of the Munich court. This “musica riservata” is noted for its great compositional skill and sophisticated Latin texts – referring to Christmas events in this case. The VocalConsort Berlin supplements this half-hour work with additional motets by Lasso, also associated with Christmas celebrations.
IMPORT The members of the Kuijken family are renowned for their contributions to early music scholarship and performance practice. Flutist Barthold Kuijken specializes in the performance of early music on original instruments. Currently principal flutist in La Petite Bande, Kuijken also
plays chamber music concerts all over the world and has recorded extensively. This specially priced boxed set brings together recordings of 18th century French music that Kuijken made between 1979 and 2003 for the Accent label.

IMPORT Composer Édouard Lalo’s work encompassed the period of Romanticism that witnessed the evolution of the romance de salon genre into the mélodie française or French art song. It is an injustice of posterity that only Fauré, Duparc
and Debussy acquired true fame in this genre. This collection from baritone Tassis Christoyannis and pianist Jeff Cohen featuring the two scènes de salon for voice and piano, the seven romances and the 23 mélodies, shows that Lalo easily stands alongside his more well-known countrymen.
IMPORT Louis Schwizgebel may not be as well-known as other pianists on the international stage, but he leaves an indelible stamp on each masterpiece he performs. This album, dedicated to Camille Saint-Saëns, began with a sensational
recording of the Piano Concerto No.2 made in 2014 for the BBC. Moved by his performance, the BBC and Aparté decided to join forces to produce, under the same conditions, the Piano Concerto No.5 as a natural pairing to complete this transcendent program.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDEven today, Biber’s Rosary Sonatas are considered the most extensive example of scordatura — a technique whereby the strings are purposefully tuned differently from their usual arrangement. In these works, the violin’s usual G-D-A-E tuning is only used for the opening sonata and the closing Passacaglia. The other fourteen sonatas each have a different configuration of tuning. Compositionally, this allowed Biber to obtain unusual chords, opening up a whole new spectrum of harmonic and textural possibilities. This fundamentally altered what a violin was and could be; its physicality as well as its voice was transformed. On this recording, the incomparable Rachel Podger reveals all the mysteries and glories of these amazing works.

IMPORT The work of a young twenty-one year old on the edge of his too brief but meteoric career, Purcell’s Fantasias for viols reveal the composer’s most intimate expression. A masterpiece of polyphonic thinking to which only the Musical Offering and the Art of Fugue by Bach are worthy comparison. Sit Fast is incomparable in this music, breathing life into the muted colors and arranging them with admirable subtlety. These are performances of an exhilarating intensity.

IMPORT In his famous 1720 pamphlet Il teatro alla moda, composer Benedetto Marcello satirized what he saw as “excesses” in the new style of Venetian opera espoused by Vivaldi and others. Each of the qualities he mocked, from cadenzas and virtuoso variations to the addition of popular dances and sound effects, has provided inspiration for the works on this new release from Amandine Beyer and Gli incogniti. Vivaldi’s experiments — his spontaneity, his striking juxtapositions and contrasts — are key to the gloriously theatrical flavor of his instrumental music.

On this new release, they complete their cycle with performances of the Violin Sonatas Nos.2 and 3 alongside Schumann’s Three Romances Op.94. The program concludes with the F.A.E. Sonata, a collaborative rarity by Brahms, Schumann and Albert Dietrich written in honor of the great violinist Joseph Joachim, who was challenged by the composers to guess who had written which movement.

IMPORT 2015 marks the 300th anniversary of the death of Louis XIV. An autocratic ruler, the Sun King was known for plunging his country into famine with his endless battles, but also for his contributions to the arts. Throughout his seventy-two year reign, music played a crucial role in his royal life. It was meticulously arranged around him, his court, his desires and his hunts. This collection featuring recordings from René Jacobs, William Christie, Philippe Herreweghe and many more presents the soundtrack to ordinary days and grand nights at Versailles.

IMPORTFrancesco Benucci was an outstanding Italian bass/baritone singer of the 18th century. This collection of Arias, featuring English operatic bass Matthew Rose, offers a fascinating insight into his world. This tribute to the larger-than-
life opera star, for whom Mozart created the role of Figaro, features arias from Mozart, Salieri, Sarti, Martín y Soler and Paisiello. Rose is superbly backed by Jonathan Cohen leading Arcangelo, one of the world’s leading ensembles.
IMPORTRené Clausen and Stephen Paulus are two of the biggest names in American choral music of the last few decades. Clausen is best known as the Artistic Director of the annual Concordia Christmas Concerts, and as an outstanding
teacher and conductor. Paulus has composed more than 600 works — from operas and large-scale oratorios to accessible arrangements of carols and folk songs. He was the first American composer to write for the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at King’s College, Cambridge. In the singers of Royal Holloway Choir both composers find worthy new champions.

IMPORTThe much-fêted Takács Quartet presents three popular string quartets from Czechoslovakia. Janácek’s String Quartet No.1 was inspired by Leo Tolstoy’s novella, The Kreutzer Sonata, which was in turn inspired by Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No.9. Janácek’s String Quartet No.2 was dedicated to his friendship with Kamila Stösslová, a married woman 38 years his junior with whom he exchanged over 700 letters. As the subtitle suggests, Smetana’s String Quartet No.1 ‘From My Life’ is semi-autobiographical and consists of sketches of periods from Smetana’s life. All three works share narrative undercurrents that draw performances of gripping engagement from this elite group of players.

a desire for openness to the world, a mix of disciplines and an insatiable curiosity. Merzouki said of this release, “beyond video projections, I wanted the music of Armand Amar to come to rest on the choreography and images as an additional invitation to travel. I knew and what I didn’t know — that
I had long wanted to explore... g r a d u a l l y , e v e r y t h i n g came together in a dance, as if all the elements
were parts of the same world, and
myself within it.”

As we approach Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s centenary, the musical world is rediscovering his compositions. Once considered merely a follower of Dmitri Shostakovich, listeners can now appreciate the originality in his works. Here the Zemlinsky Quartet, joined by pianist Nikita Mndoyants, offers up sophisticated performances of Weinberg’s Piano Quartets and Piano Quintet. Canadian contralto Maureen Forrester is a legend of the opera world. A favorite of Bruno Walter, she became one of the foremost interpreters of the Mahlerian style, and the heir apparent to Kathleen Ferrier. This tribute from Praga features performances of Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn and Rückert-Lieder. The Prazák Quartet’s latest release juxtaposes two of Beethoven’s most significant string quartets. The eighth marked the composer’s complete break with Haydn and Mozart, while the fifteenth basically re-invented the quartet form.

Nature has always been a source of inspiration for painters, musicians, and poets. The compositions of Enjott Schneider approach nature in various ways. His symphony Dunkelwelt Untersberg examines myths surrounding a legendary mountain in the Alps. Naturklänge is about pure sound as a natural phenomenon. In the two orchestral suites, being bound to the earth is expressed as a love for a native land or landscape. Klaus Ospald’s Leopardi Cycle is based on the work of Italian poet Giacomo Leopardi. Notable in all three works is a preference for low tonal regions, especially of the brass and woodwinds, augmented by deep percussion. Ospald uses the oscillations, beats and irritations of enharmonics to blur the sounds and make them dazzlingly unreal. For half a century, Juan Carlos Paz has had an impact on the avant-garde aesthetic in Argentina and Latin America. In honor of his decades of commitment to Latin American contemporary music, Wergo presents this portrait of Paz that features two world première recordings.

IMPORT Vibrant, tremendously danceable and so very Cape-Verdean, Lura’s new album focuses on the archipelago’s energizing up-tempo funana beat. It features contributions from three remarkable guests: Brazilian poet and musician Naná Vasconcelos on title track “Herança;” Richard Bona on “Barca di Papel” (which he co-wrote with Lura); and rising Cape-Verdean music star Elida Almeida on “Nhu Santiagu.” Herança is a golden opportunity to re-explore the rich culture of Cape Verde and its people, traditions and music in the company of the most melodious, charismatic singer of an entire generation of Cape Verdean artists.

“An intriguing clash of styles.”—THE GUARDIAN
IMPORTA native of Salento, Antonio Castrignanò has played and collaborated with such diverse artists such as Stewart Copeland, The Chieftains and Ballakè Sissoko. He was recently featured on voice and tambourine in Ludovico Einaudi’s
recording of La Notte della Taranta, and has become one of the main figures in the rediscovery of the musical traditions of Salento. Backed by the clever production of Turkish multi-instrumentalist and DJ Mercan Dede, Castrignanò’s new album Fomenta builds on the traditions of his homeland to create a totally new sound.
IMPORTOriginally formed by writer Rina Durante in 1975, Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino is regarded as Italy’s leading and longest-standing traditional music ensemble, hailing from the Salento, the heel of the Italian boot, in Puglia.
Italy’s fascinating dichotomy of tradition and modernity come together in the music of CGS: the seven piece band and dancer are the leading exponents in a new wave of young performers re-inventing Southern Italy’s Pizzica musical and dance traditions for today’s global audience. This album celebrates the band’s 40th anniversary.
