Sound therapy is a relatively new healing technique.
• It employs the vibrations of the human voice (as well as objects that resonate) to go beyond relaxation and foster healing.
• We recently asked Belgian singer and sound therapist Patricia PE Janssen, founder of the company Constig, about her practice.

Belgian singer Patricia PE Janssen got started teaching sound therapy by accident.
• People would request group sessions instead of individual singing lessons.
• It was difficult to organise these group sessions as “real” singing lessons.
• She designed a workshop based on relaxation exercises and discovered that they proved to not only release vocal tension but physical tension, too.

Patricia’s holistic approach to teaching sound therapy involves finding and
accepting your own voice.
• Your voice is more than just your vocal folds and Patricia treats your voice as an integral part of yourself.
• Patricia uses insights and techniques based on scientific research and your own body, but doesn’t use external sound instruments as some of her colleagues do.
• Some techniques that Patricia uses are the Lichtenberger Method (also known as “sound-related singing”), the Linklater Voice Training Technique (which frees the natural voice), and her own exercises.

People benefit from sound therapy because they can work through issues
without having to explain them.
• Sound therapy is a way to observe your inner self and become aware of your subconscious thought processes.
• Connecting to these subconscious thoughts with sounds can be very freeing, as it’s often very hard to talk about certain life events.

People benefit from sound therapy because they can work through issues
without having to explain them.
• After allowing yourself to live through your fears and limitations through your own sound, you are better able to accept them as part of who you are.
• Using your voice in such a powerful way helps you to contribute to the world because you are no longer afraid of allowing your voice to be heard.

A singer’s body is their instrument.
• Singers are storytellers that use other people’s words and pitches to tell the story.
• The outside world has an impact on singers, which in turn impacts their voice or performance and therefore the way the audience hears the story.
• Singers are always aware of themselves. If a singer has an “off day” or just had good news, it will make a massive difference in how they perform on stage.

A singer’s body is their instrument.
• Sometimes it can be very difficult to master a song that a singer has somehow lived themselves and emotions may run deep, especially during a performance.
• Through this self-awareness, singers transform their pasts into a piece of art, while accepting themselves along the way, to bring the message of the story to the audience.

Harnessing the power of the human voice through sound therapy can have
deep and lasting benefits.
• Understanding that your body is your instrument helps you to free your voice and use it to fully express yourself, especially if you are a singer.
• With sound therapy, you can find the authority of your own true voice and self.
