BY JESSE KREMER (R-KEWASKUM)
I am often asked if my most recentoccupation as a state legislator is every-thing that I expected. To be honest, I didnot know what to expect. When I ran foroffice I had no idea what a legislator getspaid, no idea how to draft a law and noidea how to pass a massive state budget. However, since becoming an elected officialI have learned many things and have alsorealized that some commonly held miscon-ceptions about public office are not neces-sarily reality. Three of those misconcep-
tions involve career politicians, lobbyistsand partisan politics.
First, I have been surprised to find thatthere are more than a few legislators in ourstate who are not stereotypical politicians. Our government was never intended to befilled with career politicians, but ratherwith folks who have worked in the trench-es like everybody else and are one daycalled upon on to serve and represent theirneighbors in an elected position. Theseindividuals, myself included, are willing totake on the tough issues, act in the bestinterest of their constituents regardless of what is popular and hold strong to tradi-tional family and solid Christian principles.
Second, another commonly misunder-stood area of government is lobbying. Many constituents believe that lobbyistshover around the capitol attempting toinfluence our votes and the legislationthat we pass. That is not the case.Lobbyists are experts in their field andserve as spokespersons for a particularindustry or group, communicating thewishes of those they represent to legisla-tors and the public to raise awareness onan issue. Lobbyists are extremely knowl-edgeable in the specific areas that they
represent and, as such, are excellentresources when drafting legislation. I willnever sign on to any bill or be prodded intovoting for something that the majority of my district and I would not agree with.
Finally, the issue of partisan politics. The media often portrays a lot of headbutting and stonewalling betweenDemocrats and Republicans. That could notbe further from the truth. Although Irarely agree with my Democrat colleagues,I do not disrespect them. When we passeach other in the capitol we not only sayhello, but respectfully address each otheras Representative or Senator. We joke incommittee hearings and amongst each
other and,believe itor not, wemeet ine a c ho t h e r ' soffices onoccas ion .It is actual-ly comicalat times tow i t n e s sDemocrat
committeem e m b e r sturn on ther h e t o r i cwhen thecamera isr o l l i n g , just to getthat splashon the evening news.
As you can imagine, my first eightmonths has been extremely educational. Ilook forward to continuing to help movethis state forward should you grant me thehonor of continuing to serve this district inthe years to come.
