Hartford Union students are pictured outside Walmart a few weeks ago after purchasing toys that were donated to Toys for Tots.
HUHS students and staff wasted notime in getting ready to support theirlocal community during the holidays.
Thirty years ago, the HartfordChristmas Committee created a donationdrive called Just A Name to help local fam-ilies in Hartford. The past 15 years, the H-Club at HUHS has been helping the sameorganization by asking students to eitherdonate toys or money to help the causeknown as Toys for Tots.
This year, over $7200 was raisedbetween H-Club, FFA, and student partici-pation. The money was then spent at
Walmart, buying gifts for families.Along with the money that was raised,
over $,6000 worth of toys were also donat-ed. “The Christmas Committee was onceagain very grateful for everyone's generos-ity,” H-Club adviser, Scott Helms said.
The amounts of people that are regis-tering to receive these gifts are goingdown. This year, only 160 families regis-tered which allows more gifts to go toeach family.
Occurring at the same time as the Toysfor Tots drive is the Giving Tree, put on byStudent Council. The Giving Tree is a dec-
orated Christmas tree filled with names of local kids in need. Willing students thentake the tags, buy the gifts suggested, and return the gift with the tag.
These gifts correspond directly withToys for Tots. Both drives work together totry and accumulate the most gifts for thefamilies in need. “Common necessitieslisted on the tags were clothing, diapers, and toys, depending on the ages of thepeople,” student council member MelissaClement said.
