Dear Head Teacher

Firstly, may I say a profound ‘thank you’ for supporting Harvest for the Hungry – you really are helping change

the lives of some of the neediest people across Europe. This year Harvest for the Hungry is celebrating 25

years since it started! In the early days, many schools across the country got involved in collecting food items

and creating food parcels which were then driven across to Europe. Nowadays it is more cost effective to

raise funds so that food items can be purchased locally in the countries involved. Schools can still get involved

in collecting food items which can then be sold at a community fair, or given to a local church to sell. You may

have other ideas about what would work in your school?

This year’s appeal is focussing on the theme, ‘I was hungry’ and features people of all ages right across Europe

who often go hungry, and are trapped in a vicious cycle of poverty and poor health. As our partners across

Europe reach out to meet their physical needs, they have opportunities to show them the love of God.

Recently we heard the story of Kosara in Serbia. Kosara is a single mother who lives with her three children,

aged 3 months, 18 months and 8 years old. She receives £100 each month in state support. This covers her

rent, but not her food or bills. As she cares for her children she is unable to go out to earn additional money

and finds herself in a very vulnerable and desperate position. She is immensely grateful for the monthly

parcels of food brought to her and through the friendship of local Christians has put her faith in Christ.

Your school’s involvement will enable our partners across Europe to take many more food parcels to

desperate families across 15 countries in areas of greatest need. It’s not that we want other continents to be

neglected, but as champions of the needs in Europe today we can’t sit quietly whilst we see so many children

and families facing poverty, hunger and homelessness on our doorstep. So thank you for your support and

your response.

We hope that you find the information and resources enclosed in this pack helpful as you seek to engage your

pupils with the opportunity to make a difference in Europe today. If you need any assistance in using the

SECTION 1 – Your Harvest Assembly Introduction

A Harvest celebration is always special! People of all ages understand that it is an opportunity to

both thank God for his provision and display generosity for those less fortunate than themselves.

Because TEN is a Christian organisation, these notes are written from a Christian perspective,

but you are welcome to adapt them to be inclusive of pupils from different backgrounds and

faiths.

You will undoubtedly have your own way of celebrating Harvest as a school, and this pack aims

to fit into your plans and procedures by offering modular inputs; a talk outline, activities and

youth/children ideas that you can use if you feel they are helpful. Ultimately, your Harvest

celebration will still be distinctly yours, but with a focus on the needs of the poor in Europe

today, and an opportunity for your school to give through TEN to alleviate this poverty and

offer hope for the future.

Tips for constructing your talk

• We have provided some key themes for you to draw on, and a talk outline. Please don’t feel

you have to use all of this material – you might choose to just use one section and expand

upon it, especially if you only have 10 minutes or so to speak. Just use what fits!

• A great way to get and keep people’s attention is to start each major point with an anecdote,

share the meaning behind the anecdote and then demonstrate how the scripture passage you

are using underlines this meaning. A number of current stories are used in this pack which you

are welcome to include.

• The PowerPoint and video can also be used during the Assembly.

Useful Bible Passages: (All verses taken from the Contemporary English Version (CEV) unless

otherwise stated)

Matthew 25: 35-40: ‘…35 When I was hungry, you gave me something to eat, and when I was

thirsty, you gave me something to drink. When I was a stranger, you welcomed me, 36 and when I

was naked, you gave me clothes to wear. When I was sick, you took care of me, and when I was in

jail, you visited me.”

37 Then the ones who pleased the Lord will ask, “When did we give you something to eat or

drink? 38 When did we welcome you as a stranger or give you clothes to wear 39 or visit you while

you were sick or in jail?”

fall off the vines. Leave them for the poor and for those foreigners who live among you. I am

the LORD your God.’

Exodus 23:11: 11 ‘but let the land rest during the seventh year. The poor are to eat what they

want from your fields, vineyards, and olive trees during that year, and when they have all they want

from your fields, leave the rest for wild animals.’

1 John 3: 17-18: 17 ‘If we have all we need and see one of our own people in need, we must have pity on

that person, or else we cannot say we love God. 18 Children, you show love for others by truly helping them,

and not merely by talking about it.’

Luke 3:11: 11 ‘John told them, “If you have two coats, give one to someone who doesn’t have any. If you

have food, share it with someone else.”’

These are some themes that you could choose from to use in a talk or Assembly on ‘I

was hungry…’

Reflection: Think of a time when you felt really hungry. How did it make you feel? How soon

were you able to get something to eat?

God’s plans for his people

Matthew 25:35-40

• We have so much in the West, yet there are great inequalities in our own society and

across Europe, the Continent to which we belong. How can we share resources better with

our neighbours? (Luke 3:11)

• The Bible shows a deep concern for the poor and the hungry.

• God asks his people to partner with him in meeting the needs of the poor and the

oppressed.

• Our response to the poor speaks volume about what we believe. James 2: 14-17 reminds us

of the necessity of faith and actions.

• As we give, so we are often blessed and grow in our faith. (Proverbs 22:9)

• Providing the resources to feed poor families in Europe does so much more than meet

physical needs. It can shine the light and love of God into peoples’ lives, restore dignity and

bring them into a new relationship with Jesus that brings hope for the future.

Exodus 23:11; Leviticus 19: 9-10

• The Bible is consistent across the Old and New Testaments in God’s concern for the poor.

• God’s concern is a very practical one-to see people fed and clothed, as well as restored to a

right relationship with Him. He gives his people very practical guidelines about how to

provide for the poorest in society.

• Are you aware of practical measures that the Church in your community are taking to

ensure that no one goes hungry?

• What can you do as a school in response to the many poor and hungry people in our

communities and Continent?

Luke 9:12-17

• Jesus meets the needs of the hungry through the compassion of his people. He takes what

little we offer and multiplies it. As he does so, the hungry are fed and all involved grow in

their faith and trust in God.

• The goal in giving is equality. Corinthians 8:14 ‘At the present time your plenty will supply

what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need’.

• Many of TEN’s partners in Europe are working to give children and families a future and a

hope, through Harvest for the Hungry, education programmes and Bible studies. Harvest for

the Hungry doesn’t just provide food parcels but is often the first step in a family

discovering the love of God. It often leads to greater involvement with the local church,

giving families and children a chance to discover Jesus for themselves. Harvest for the

Hungry is giving children and families a future and a hope.

Possible talk outline:

The Bible shows a deep concern for the poor and the hungry. God asks his people to partner with

Him in responding to the needs of the poor and the hungry and giving them dignity and hope for

the future. As we give, so our lives are enriched as well as the lives of the recipients.

Matthew 25:35 God’s concern for the poor is a major theme throughout the whole Bible. This

passage in Matthew 25: 35 shows just how intrinsically our response to the poor is tied in with our

relationship with Jesus. It is these words from the Bible that motivated Galina Dzhuzenova from

Compassion Ministries in Moscow to get involved in providing food parcels for individuals and

families in need, 25 years ago. Bella Jafarova came to Moscow from Azerbaijan in 1992 as an

Armenian refugee. She wasn’t eligible for State benefits and came to Compassion Ministries for

help. Ever since, she has helped other families in need by bringing them along to Compassion

Ministries too so they can get food parcels to feed their families. Out of her gratitude for what she

has received, she is helping others (2 Corinthians 8:14).

This passage challenges us that our actions matter, and that as part of a relatively wealthy nation,

much is expected of us as Luke 12: 48b reminds us. Although the cost of living has risen, and it can

be tough to make ends meet at the end of the month, most of us in the UK have enough to feed

ourselves and our families, don’t we? Nonetheless there has been a steep rise in the number of

people in the UK who are needing to access the help of Food Banks. Just across the water in many

parts of Central and South East Europe, the proportion of people living below the bread line can be

as high as 1 in 4. As neighbours, what can we do to help?

Today, like Kosara, many mothers are desperately concerned about how they are going to feed

their children. God hears the cry of the poor and calls his people to partner with him in responding

to the cry of the hungry, both physically and spiritually. Kosara has come to know the life-changing

love and compassion of Jesus, experienced through the kindness and generosity of Christian people

in her home country of Serbia.

Twelve year old Anifa in Bulgaria lives with her grandmother because her parents have left to seek

work in Sofia. To help her survive the winter she attends the soup kitchen run by Mission Possible

in the town of Ihtiman in Bulgaria. Harvest for the Hungry enabled Mission Possible Bulgaria to

provide a warm nutritious meal to 50 Roma children every day during the particularly harsh Winter

of 2016-2017.

As Teresa of Avila a 16th Century Carmelite nun said, ‘Jesus has no hands or feet on earth but ours,

now.’ Even when he was here on earth Jesus encouraged his disciples to get involved in responding

to need, and in doing so to build their faith. Of those who have much, much will be demanded. But

we are reminded too that life is precarious as we have seen in many countries of Europe such as

Greece and Spain. We are called to give out of our abundance so that others might give to us in

times of need. It is about partnerships and reciprocity. We are blessed that we might bless others.

What is our response?

Many of us, faced by the extent of the world’s needs, probably feel daunted if we’re honest. We

may feel like the disciples did when faced with a hungry crowd, ‘Send them away to find food and

shelter. What can we possibly do?’

Luke 9:12-17 Jesus shows that He uses His people of all ages to meet the needs of others but He

also wants to build His people emotionally and spiritually. He takes the little the disciples have, five

small loaves and two fishes, blesses it and uses it, to feed the many. What an empowering

experience this must have been for the disciples, that Jesus used what little they had to feed

everyone there. Jesus doesn’t just provide for physical needs but empowers them, showing them

how much He values them. God calls each of us to be involved with Him in his Kingdom work,

offering people a future and a hope – What an amazing privilege!

There is hope! Thanks to Harvest for the Hungry, families like these and many more like them are

experiencing physical and spiritual transformation because of the generosity of people who are

prepared to give what they can so that our partners can buy food to feed the many across Europe.

The generosity of many churches and individuals in 2016 raised over £18,000 to feed hungry

children and families across Europe. In the period January to April 2017 529 families received 874

food parcels plus 50 Roma children were fed a hot meal every day at the Rozino soup Kitchen in

Bulgaria in January alone.

This year TEN is celebrating 25 years since Harvest for the Hungry started. Our goal is to raise

£25,000 for 25 years. Help TEN respond to the cry of the hungry and give them a future and a

hope so that they might become the hope of the future in their countries. Your gifts through

Harvest for the Hungry can enable our partners to provide food parcels to feed families in

desperate need. However, these food parcels can do so much more - they can demonstrate God’s

love and care for these families and build faith and hope for the future. Giving a food parcel can be

the start of a new hope in relationship with the ultimate giver, Jesus Christ, who gave his life for the

world, that all who believe in Him should have abundant and eternal life.

Matthew 25: 37-40, “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and

feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? …” The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you,

whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”

As we give generously to meet the needs of the hungry in Europe, so our relationship with Jesus is

deepened and we will find ourselves also to be richly blessed. Jesus’ light will shine through us and

show a world in need, the light and hope of Christ.

Some prayers for the Assembly

Heavenly Father, we thank you that your heart was moved to compassion for us. You did not

leave us in our plight, but sent Jesus, your Son, that our salvation might be full and complete.

Today we know communion with him through the Holy Spirit and are filled with a love that,

though not of this world, overflows with sadness and concern for it.

May we demonstrate the perfect love of God and the hope of your Kingdom through not

just our words, but also our actions. May this love so captivate our hearts that we cannot

help but care for the broken and downtrodden, those stuck in the cycle of poverty, those

who face homelessness and hunger, and those who need our help both near and far. Thank

you also for the work of TEN and their partners across Europe. We pray that every item of

food that is given in God’s name through them will not just fill a physical void, but also point

toward the hope that grants eternal salvation in Christ. Amen.

May God bless us with discomfort at easy answers, half-truths, and superficial relationships, so

that we may live deep within our hearts. May God bless us with anger at injustice, oppression,

and exploitation of people, so that we may work for economic justice for all people.

May God bless us with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, hunger, homelessness and

rejection, so that we may reach out our hand to comfort them and to turn their pain into joy.

And may God bless us with enough foolishness to believe that we can make a difference in the

world so that we can do what others claim cannot be done.

Ice breaker: ‘My favourite food is…’

Introduction: Everybody feels passionate about their favourite food. But how would they cope if

they never had access to it.

Activity: Have everyone stand in the middle of the room and then shout, ‘who loves chocolate run

to the right of the room and who loves sweets run to the left of the room!’ Repeat this several

times with different choices of food such as ‘who loves fish and chips run to the right of the room,

who loves burgers and chips run to the left of the room.’

Conclusion: Explain how in the West we can so easily go to a takeaway for our favourite food,

but many people never have that choice.

Ask: How would you cope if you couldn’t ever eat your favourite food?

Jesus was concerned about peoples’ practical response to those in need

Explanation: This passage is talking particularly about our responsibility to those who are hungry

and in need in our world, especially when we have so much ourselves.

Ask: What are some of the key elements of it? (Answers might include: recognising a need, the

decision to help based on the ability to provide, having something to provide, being filled with God’s

love, etc.)

Ask: What should be our motivation when we give? (Answers might include: to compare what we

can do against what others can do, to give what we are able, to help those in need, show God’s

love, etc.)

Activity: ‘My cup runneth over’ (best played outside or where water spillage doesn’t matter!)

Description: Hand out plastic cups to everyone and fill half of them up to the brim with water.

The other half should be completely empty. The people with empty cups need to try to get water

in their cup by ‘bumping’ into those with full ones (and holding their empty cup under the full one).

However, those with the empty cups also need to be blindfolded. Therefore, they will completely

rely on those with full cups for guidance. They will have 60 seconds to try to get as much water as

possible. Use a black marker pen to mark how high on their cup each ‘blindfolded’ person manage

to fill up through bumping. After this swap places so that those who were blindfolded now have full

to brimming cups, and vice versa. After another 60 seconds mark the cups of the new blindfolded

group and then see who out of everyone managed to get enough water!

(Note: if you are concerned about people getting wet – and especially perhaps young children who

might find that distressing – simply get some large black bin liners and make leg and head holes and

use as a water proof covering. Old plastic shopping bags kept in place with a rubber band could

even cover feet and shoes if necessary.)

Discussion: Ask what they though the point of the activity was. If help is needed with this, explain

that the blindfolded people with empty cups represented those stuck in a poverty trap (explain

what this is if necessary) and that those with the full cups represented Christians who had the love

of God and material resources to share with others. Ask how it felt to be blindfolded and helpless,

and then explore what it must feel like to not be able to eat enough, or feed your family.

Share some facts about poverty in Europe today (also found on page 17 as a sheet to be handed

out):

• over 80 million people living in poverty

• 85,000,000 people do not have a toilet in their home

• 1 in 5 live below the poverty line

• 1 in 6 do not have clean running water

• 100% unemployment in some areas

• Salaries sometimes as low as 10% that of UK equivalent

• Moldova is the poorest country with a GDP per capita similar to Ghana (in Africa).

How to get involved

Actions: Anyone can get involved in helping people living in poverty across Europe. A gift of just

£10 is the cost of a food parcel for a family. It’s so easy to get involved. All you have to do is:

Step1. Raise funds to sponsor a food parcel(s). Discuss ways in which your group can fundraise;

we would love to know your ideas on what fundraising you are doing.

Suggestions (also found on page 20)

• Run a poverty café using recipes of European foods (check websites)

• ‘Stay awake’ night - during the night the group could make things to sell

• Clothes swap – people bring their unwanted clothes and pay an amount to swap their

clothes

• Harvest ‘soup and a roll’ lunch, the youth group could run it

• Offer to pack food in Super Markets (with collection buckets!)

• Sponsored events such as bike rides, silence, swimming, relay racing wearing fancy dress,

three-legged walk for a distance, climbing a mountain.

Step 2. Send the money to the Transform Europe Now office.

Step 3. We will then send the money to our partners (people we know very well), in these very

poor parts of Europe.

Step 4. The money will be used to buy food locally, made up into boxes of food and given to

families who are very poor.

Result: Happy families with food on the table, knowing that you care enough for them to help

them in their need.

Concluding Prayer time:

‘Heavenly Father, thank you that we live in a country where most people have enough to eat. We

pray for those, here and abroad, who often go to bed feeling hungry and ask that your kindness and

love would be with them.

Thank you that as a church and as a group of young people we can be an extension of your

kindness and make a difference. Please bless our gifts of compassion and our plans to raise money

to help those in need.

Help our hearts never to grow hard. Help us to always be grateful for what you have given us, and

always to be full of your love for those less well off than ourselves.

Introduction: The aim of this game is for others to guess your favourite food by describing it.

You can’t say the name of the food but you can say what it looks like, smells like, tastes like and

maybe even sounds like! Let everyone take turns having the group guess what their favourite food

is.

Conclusion: Almost everybody likes food but of course we need it too. Like a car needs petrol

or a phone needs to be charged our bodies need food so that they can work. Ask the question:

what must it be like if you don’t have any food and feel really hungry?

Craft Activity: Making ‘I was Hungry’ Money Boxes

Explanation: Page 19 contains a sheet that can be photocopied (onto card or thicker paper) and

from which can be cut out a simple ‘Feed the Children’ money box (very young children may need

the box cut out for them beforehand). Ask the children in your group to colour it in with pictures

of the food that might be bought with the money, and even the happy people who will receive it.

Over the next few weeks they can put whatever coins they can into the box to help with the

church’s gift / school’s gift for ‘Harvest for the Hungry 2017’.

Food Collections: One school, working closely with the local church, got the children to bring in

tins and other food items which the church then sold to raise funds for Harvest for the Hungry.

Harvest for the Hungry – stories, testimonies and messages

“Beneficiaries were amazed, surprised that people from another country think about them, and care, when

their own families and the government forget them. In this care they saw God’s love to them.” Vladimir

Ubeivolc, Director, Beginning of Life, Moldova

14-year-old Radu lives with his disabled mother in Moldova, and his

father deserted the family when he was young. As he must work the

fields to earn money to support himself and his mother he

consequently misses school. The delivery of food parcels enables him

to go to school and hopefully gain a profession. He now also attends a

Christian club run by ‘Beginning of Life’, Moldova.

Dava is an elderly widow with 5 children who

lives in Albania. Each day she faces the challenges

of poverty, mental health and social isolation.

Her 17-year-old son is in and out of prison and

she has little means of support for the rest of the

family. Dava is so grateful for the food parcels

brought to her by the church and in this way her

life is transformed by the testimony of God’s

faithfulness and love.

but not her food or bills. As she cares for her

children she is unable to go out to earn

additional money and finds herself in a very

vulnerable and desperate position. She is

immensely grateful for the monthly parcels of

food brought to her and through the friendship

of local Christians has put her faith in Christ.

SECTION 4 – Financial Info & Record

Taking a Harvest Collection

Collections taken for Harvest for the Hungry are usually done so on behalf of Transform Europe Now

(TEN), with responsibility for claiming Gift Aid and distributing the funds falling to TEN, whose income it is.

To help maximise all donations, by making use of the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme

(GASDS), please deposit all cash collected to the Lloyds bank account detailed on the next

page. This will enable TEN to add 25% to all cash gifts of £20 or less without the need for a

signed Gift Aid envelope (see below for details).

If it is easier, the cash can be deposited in your own account and a cheque sent to TEN for the amount of

cash collected, but this will mean GASDS does not apply, with fewer funds going to the project.

Please note that GASDS will only apply to donations of cash for which nothing is received in return. Please

note separately cash donations collected and cash from fundraising events/activities.

Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme (GASDS)

GASDS is completely separate from normal Gift Aid (although we get the money from HMRC via the same

claims process). You can get details about the scheme from www.gov.uk/government/publications/charities-

detailed-guidance-notes/chapter-8-the-gift-aid-small-donations-scheme. The following outlines the process

for recording details of the cash collected that will enable us to boost eligible cash donations by 25%:

1. Count the cash collected, ideally with another person so two of you can sign (but one person

counting is acceptable), and complete the table that lists different note and coin denominations –

enter the total amount of each denomination and put the total of all cash collected at the bottom.

The person(s) who counted the cash collected should sign and print their name(s) where indicated.

2. Whilst counting, check to see if there is any evidence of a single donation of greater than £20. An

example of this would be if four £10 notes were rolled/folded together, indicating one person had

rolled/folded them together and posted them in. Obviously if you get a £50 note you should assume

this is a single donation of greater than £20!

3. If there is no evidence of a single donation of greater than £20 cross through statement B) to

indicate this. If there is evidence of single donation(s) of greater than £20, cross through statement

A) to indicate this and write at the end of statement B) the total of all single donations that appear

to be greater than £20 (e.g. if a £50 note and four £10 notes rolled/folded together were in a

collection this should be recorded as £90 at the end of statement B).
