Principal News…..
We are now settling into the “new normal” COVID-19 Phase 3 environment. Since we are so small the only real difference for us is that we are still unable to have a school assembly where all year groups can be present. To combat this and get clear, consistent messages out, and to acknowledge students who are performing at a higher level, we will be having Lower School (Years 7 - 9) and Senior School (Years 10 - 12) assemblies in Week 9. Both assemblies will occur on Wednesday 24 June.
Times to be advised.
Winter chills and sniffles - please keep your children home if they are unwell, and continue to stress good hygiene practices. We are having a spate of illness at the moment, so thank you to all families who are keeping their children home. This is much
appreciated by us all.
With the School Canteen open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, we are looking at options for the other two days.
Student Counci l We are currently working on our new Business Plan. As part of this process, students completed a survey at the beginning of the year. Recently the Student Council analysed the results, identified the gaps and areas of need then made suggestions on how things could be improved for our students. I am very impressed with how they have seriously considered the issues identified and the maturity of the solutions they put forward. Our School Captains, Ella Morgan, Brylin Bonner and Will Barron
will present their work to the staff and the School Board.
School Assembl ies In Week 10, we see the return of the High School Experience Days and parent meetings for parents of Year 6 students, who
have questions to ask about high school in general and Harvey SHS in particular. Letters to the Year 6 parents will be sent out
this week and the details posted on our Website.

Academic Extension Students are working very diligently in academic extension classes. Mr Ford’s mathematics students have completed rigorous NAPLAN style tests. They are now working through targeted lessons to improve any mathematical deficits they have to achieve greater success in more challenging mathematical equations. Mrs Dyson’s writing students are preparing their entries to compete in the Australian Children’s Television Foundation 2020 My Place Writing Competition. They have been completing and sharing short writes using their senses and discussing how to use figurative language successfully in their writing. Watch this space, for student work to be published in the next edition of the Newsletter.
Follow the Dream “Make hay while the sun shines.” Mr Newton took advantage of the wonderful weather to tutor Sam Smith during the last of the warm weather days. Sam has been focussing on his dreams of becoming an engineer, utilising his afternoon tutoring to extend his science understandings.
At Harvey Senior High School, we show Respect for Self, Others, Learning and the Environment.

Schoo l Band
This semester the School band has been working towards the biggest event of the year; “the Year 12 Graduation” and with new students joining the band it is sure to be a treat. We can’t tell you the title at this stage as it is a secret! There have been tremendous improvements and a lot of energy from the participants this year and we look forward to future developments as more students rise to the challenge. Anyone interested in
joining the band, we practice Monday and Friday lunchtime and Wednesday morning 8.10am. New members are always welcome. Ideally there would be several bands across the lower school and upper school cohorts.
Recently we have begun guitar lessons to expand future musicians’ skills and to raise funds for the Music Department. Lessons are run on every second Thursday afternoon at 3.00pm for a $5.00 (donation) fee, and are for beginners to advanced. If we get enough numbers we will add more classes, so please contact Mr. Walker if you are interested. Funds will be used to purchase new equipment and resources for the Music Department.

Keeping mentally fit is just as important as staying physically active. Ways that we do this in LSEP include practicing Mindfulness - including Minion Mindfulness (being present and fully engaged with whatever we're doing at the moment) and learning to draw our own mandalas; and taking "Brain Breaks" every 30-35 minutes (short periods of time when we change up routines by being physically creative).
Being polite and courteous was our recent PBS focus. Here is some of the work we put together showing how we apply this focus.
Safe Food Practices at SSEP…..
SSEP students expressed their culinary skills in the kitchen as part of the practical Unit of Competency
for their Certificate II in Skills for Work. After completing the AHA Hospitality and Tourism Covid-19
Hygiene online course, they were ready to cook a 2 course meal for 15 people. Budgeting, recipe
adaption and safe food handling practices, kitchen skills, and the feedback process were all assessed.
Students did an amazing job under the guidance of Michelle Taylor, creating Thai Green Curry, Pasta
Bake, Pumpkin Soup, Homemade pizza, followed by a range of deserts. Watch out Master Chef!

This term the Year 7 students, in Mr Neasham and Mr Newton's Science classes, have been learning about the relationships between the Earth, the Sun and the Moon. To finish off their studies on this topic they attempted to replicate the phases of the
Moon this May, by scraping cream off the inside of Oreo cookies. This was a task they were pretty enthusiastic about!
During Term One, Science students of Year 7 were required to design and construct a working catapult, so they could demonstrate their under-standing of Forces and Simple Ma-chines in Physics.
After a long break, due to the Coronavirus outbreak, we were finally able to trial them out on the oval. Using a ping pong ball (for safety reasons), the winning catapult reached a distance of 3m.
I am sure some of them would have fired much further if we had used heavier ammunition. There was some impressive engineering on display here!

This term in Physical Education, our years 7 – 10 students have being actively involved in the following sports:
Athletics – We completed 5 weeks of athletics, the students competed in the classic events including shotput, discuss, javelin, long jump, triple jump and the crowd pleasing 100m sprint. Results were calculated and if the athletics carnival were to happen,
it would be extremely contested in each year group!
Fitness – The Year 9s and 10s have been pushed to their limits in the past couple of weeks in intense fitness sessions as part of the Term 2 program. Students have sweated out in circuit sessions, interval training, boxing, skipping and the legendary Beep Test relay in which students pair up and aim to finish the gruelling test,…which 13 teams did! Students have realised there are
muscles they didn’t think existed the next morning…
Kicking Skills – To finish this term, students have begun the kicking skills program involving the two sports of Soccer and AFL. Students across years 7 -10 will demonstrate their ability with kicking,
finding space, and using their footwork to their best advantage in order to achieve success.
The following topics have been covered this term in Health:
Being healthy safe and active – Students understand the importance of leading an active lifestyle by making informed decisions that enable a greater quality of life. By showing students how easy active living can be achieved, we aim for the students at
Harvey SHS to continue with this pathway for many years to come.
Nutrition and Fitness – Students have learnt about the power of food and it’s direct effect on the human body as a tool for medicine, muscle repair, weight loss and general wellbeing. Simple steps to encourage making the healthier choice can have huge results in the long run. Students have also paired their training in PE with the understanding of what training systems effect the body and how to create fitness workouts that push themselves so when it comes to fitness testing, they can proudly
show off their new improved abilities!
This term in Harvey Youth and Performance Education, students in the program have been exposed to more technical sports: Volleyball and Netball. Students are learning the correct techniques and positioning in both sports and how to use simple strategies and tactics to find space, exploit open areas and their increased fitness to keep the games moving fast and
with intent.
The students in HYPE have had double the fitness sessions over Physical Education which has been evident when they combine. Students have been pushed in continuous training, tabata sessions and resistance training. They have also learnt and incorporated various stretching tech-niques to improve their
flexibility.
Finally, the students in the theory component have learnt this term about the nervous system and its involvement in developing
power, stretching programs and just how many different ways and styles of stretching to improve their performance, and lastly
they have learnt about recovery, injury and how to deal with it so they can self-manage themselves.

We are still needing parent and community support as we endeavour to support our school through fundraising activities. One of our most recent achievements was our English rooms gaining a reading nook with delivery
of new bookcases, rugs, cushions and couches.
For us to continue this support to teachers and students we need your
help.
Our next meeting will be held Term 3, Week 3, Thursday 6 August at 5pm
in the school Library.
We look forward to seeing some new faces!
