E-mail: [email protected] Home E-mail: [email protected] Dear Parents and Students: Welcome to another year with the Osmond High School Band. In this handbook, you should find out most everything you need to know about the band program at OHS. This handbook will not only include information relating to Marching Band, but also to Concert Band (our other primary ensemble), Jazz Band and several of our smaller ensembles. If you happen to think of anything else that is not in this handbook, please get in touch with me. My contact information is on the front page of this handbook. I would like to tell you how excited I am about beginning another school year with the OHS Band Program. Last year was such a huge success and I hope we can duplicate it and even go beyond what was accomplished last year. Getting to know everyone and seeing the potential in this program/community was, and is, my most enjoyable venture. Everyone rose past my expectations and accomplished a multitude of goals. Please remember that those goals could not have been met without hard work and persistence. We must use everyone to make this program an even better success than before and an organization that everyone treats with respect and honor. Please expect to be asked to volunteer for certain activities. We can ALWAYS use help! Lastly, I would like to tell the parents that we are going to try to have a big showing at our games/concerts/parades this year. We would love to have you at every event this year if possible – dependent on your schedule, of course. Through the eyes of a student, there is nothing like seeing a huge, cheering “sea of black and orange” when marching down the street. It’s very inspiring! Please take time to visit as many band functions as possible; you will not be disappointed. Also, please feel free to observe any rehearsals during the year. All you need to do is call me to set up a time for your observation. Thank you for your time and attention. I’m sure you will find this handbook to be very informative. Please take the time to read through and fill out the information along with the needed signatures on the last page and return to me. If you need to contact me, I am available between 7:30 – 8:00 am and 1:00 – 1:30 p.m. GOOD LUCK THIS YEAR! Musically yours, Richard G. Luhr Director of Bands, Osmond High School

PURPOSE OF THE BAND PROGRAMPURPOSE OF THE BAND PROGRAMPURPOSE OF THE BAND PROGRAMPURPOSE OF THE BAND PROGRAM

The purpose of the band program at OHS is to serve as a creative outlet for all students with basic musical ability who might wish to participate, while at the same time serve the music department, the school and its community, and the student body through its public performances.

OBJECTIVES OF THE BAND PROGRAMOBJECTIVES OF THE BAND PROGRAMOBJECTIVES OF THE BAND PROGRAMOBJECTIVES OF THE BAND PROGRAM

1. To support the school and community through performances at athletic events and other public events such as parades, competitions, homecoming, dedications, and local community functions. 2. To project a positive image for the school and fine arts department at OHS. 3. To inspire students in the enjoyment and enthusiasm of music and performing. 4. To promote healthy relationships between other bands, schools, and musicians. 5. To set obtainable goals and accomplish these goals. 6. To perform at the highest possible level at all times and attain the absolute best out of each individual.

FUNDRAISINFUNDRAISINFUNDRAISINFUNDRAISINGGGG (Important information below!)(Important information below!)(Important information below!)(Important information below!)

Fundraising is one of the many activities the band and choir participate in to pay for its expenses. You will be asked to participate in fundraisers throughout the year. Although fundraising is not mandatory, it is strongly encouraged because it not only helps our musical groups, but also helps YOU in paying for expenditures created by taking trips every four years. With the high cost of music, instruments, uniforms and the cutting back on budgets, fundraising is needed just to keep our music programs alive. If students do not participate in our fundraisers, expenses that occur because of our out-of-state trips will be at their own expense. In cases of extreme financial distress, payment plans can be worked out with the music booster treasurers through the band director. Each student will be given a “Music Account.” The starting balance in this account is $0. In this account, the student can place fundraised money into it and use that for band-related expenses incurred from out of state trips, such as when we go to Minneapolis. The student can ONLY use this money for band events such as Spring Trips. Band shoes, reeds, valve oil, mouthpieces, new instruments will not be paid for from the Music Booster’s Account. Those are strictly individual expenses that need to be taken care of by each individual family. The money cannot be used for personal needs. When money is raised, it is raised in the name of Osmond High School and its music program, not in the name of that individual. When a student graduates, his/her remaining balance cannot be taken out. Instead, that money must be either a) passed down to a younger sibling currently enrolled in the Osmond Junior-Senior High School, Osmond Elementary School or the Osmond St. Mary’s School, b) passed down to another younger member of the band with financial need, or c) placed in the general music booster account to be used by the music directors and boosters at their discretion. Students and parents must designate placement of their remaining funds prior to graduation. The rules of the account are non-negotiable! Note: “All money raised” is determined after all the supplies are bought to run the fundraiser. If a student were to sell $500 worth, that doesn’t necessarily mean $500 would be placed into his/her account. When turning in fundraised money, please make all checks payable to: “Osmond Music Boosters”. Paying by check is the preferred method of payment, as the canceled check

becomes your receipt. Please place all payments in a sealed envelope with the student’s name clearly marked on it.

Note: Failure to give proper notice will be considered unexcused and will result in the lowering of your letter grade for Pep Band and will result in automatic failure for any Major Marching Band and/or Concert Band Performance. TARDINESS: “To be early is to be on time . . . To be on time is to be late … And to be late is to be left!” Tardiness should be avoided at all cost. Each band member is expected to arrive at every rehearsal and performance with music, instrument/equipment, pencil, and any other special item that might be called upon for the event.

EXAMPLES OF UNEXCUSED ABSENCES:

• Work • Going out of town • Non-emergency doctor or dentist appointments • Shopping or hair appointments • Going to another school’s game • Claiming someone “made you late”

EXAMPLES OF EXCUSED ABSENCES:

• Extreme illness • Sudden emergencies • Death in the family

Unforeseen events may arise, so these will be dealt with on an individual basis by the director.

LEADERSHIPLEADERSHIPLEADERSHIPLEADERSHIP

Band Officers and Duties

Each year the band director selects section leaders and other offices to provide student leadership to the band. Student leadership is a valuable asset, which can make or break the band program. Leadership should not be abused by any means. Always remember that respect is not demanded, it is earned. Being in a leadership position does not give

Page 10: OSMOND HIGH SCHOOL BANDOSMOND HIGH SCHOOL BAND

10

one the right to degrade another member of the band. In addition, leadership is often seen as serving, not giving orders. Think about it! Below is a list of band officers with their responsibilities: Drum Major The drum major or majorette is chosen by the band director. The drum major will act as the field leader of the marching band. In addition, the drum major will have these primary responsibilities:

• Will maintain a sense of discipline during rehearsal • Leads stretching exercises at beginning of rehearsals • Help instruct basic marching fundamentals • Act as a link between the band director and the band members • Perform other duties as assigned by the band director

Section Leaders Section leaders are chosen by the band director. The primary responsibility of the section leader is to keep up the morale and attitude of their individual section and be a role model and inspiration to the rest of the band. The section leaders will also have the following responsibilities:

• Help maintain the band’s discipline during rehearsal • Be responsible for leading sectionals. • Help sections with the memorization of music

2008-2009 Band Student Leaders Drum Majorette – Clint D. Flute Leader – Melissa T. Clarinet Leader – Paige R. Low Clarinet Leader – Kelsey O. Sax Leader – Ashley K. Low Sax Leader – Adam M. Trumpet Leader – Clint D. Low Brass Leader – Brandon K. Percussion Leader – Bryce J.

Governing Body During the first day of school, we will hold elections for the following: PRESIDENT: The president must be a senior. The president shall preside al all meetings of the organization, appoint all committees, and shall be a member of committees. VICE-PRESIDENT: The Vice-President should be a Junior or Senior. The Vice-President shall assume all the duties of the President in his/her absence. SECRETARY: The Secretary shall keep the records and the minutes of all meetings. All these officers will help the band director in recording all absences. TREASURER:

CODE OF CONDUCTCODE OF CONDUCTCODE OF CONDUCTCODE OF CONDUCT Each member is here by choice and will be treated as an adult. In return he/she is expected to act as an adult at all times and to avoid those situations that would cause one to compromise himself/herself or the school. It is advisable for all band members to realize that they are members of one of the most visible organizations of our school and serve as liaisons of OHS. Any conduct which is not exemplary or which reflects poorly on OHS will result in severe punishment and possible dismissal from the organization. If this kind of behavior occurs while on a trip, the student(s) will be sent home at his/her own expense. The conduct of any student will be a factor in his/her grades.

Uniform Requirements: Students will be issued a band uniform. You will be held responsible for these uniforms throughout the entire year. Be sure your uniform is put away properly after each use. Throughout the year, some expenditure is expected of the students: For uniforms, these items are required of the students: 1. Students will be responsible for providing their own black shoes and socks. The band director will order all the shoes that are needed for the year.

2. Students will also be responsible for providing their own white buttoned shirt. 3. Drum Majors are required to obtain a special kind of shoe and uniform.

Music Requirements: All students are expected to have all music in their folders at every rehearsal. They should also plan to come to each rehearsal with a pencil. Instrument/Equilpment Requirements: Percussion instruments will be provided by the school to percussion students. Percussionists are required to provide their own mallets and sticks. Band instruments will only be distributed to students based on cost of item or need of student (i.e. tubas, French horns, etc.).

ELIGIBILITYELIGIBILITYELIGIBILITYELIGIBILITY

All band students are expected to follow the rules pertaining to tobacco, drug, and alcohol use and academic eligibility as found in your student handbook. Ineligibility will prevent you from performing in small ensembles, soloists, in honor bands and auditions. Remember that if you are declared ineligible, you are not only hurting yourself, but to a larger degree, you are hurting the rest of the band members. Don’t let any of us down; keep your grades up!
