FOREWORD

The literature identified within this bibliography has been

selected on the basis of support for potential users involved

in the structuring of physical environments. This initial

selection of journals, books, and unpublished papers gives an

overview of man and the environmental conditions which are

part of his daily living pattern. Information leading to

design principles and implications based on the physiological,

psychological, and sociological needs of man can be synthe-

sized from the literature. Administrators, consultants,

programmers, designers and others manipulating elements within

the environment can become aware of the physical relationships

which must be satisfied for humans to function in an optimum

manner.

The bibliographic listings contained within this publication

were identified and made available to the ERIC System by the

Environmental Design Center at the University of Wisconsin.

The publications have been identified through Environmental

Design coursework over a two-year period prior to the estab-

lishment of the ERIC Clearinghouse on Educational Facilities.

Expanding coverage with new publication citations will be pub-

lished by the Clearinghouse on Educational Facilities as a

periodic updating of the selected and general bibliographies.

As an active participant in the Clearinghouse on Educational

Facilities, the Environmental Design Center will continue to

develop bibliographies and State-of-the-Art papers pertinent

to subject areas dealing with educational facilities.

The Clearinghouse on Educational Facilities serves as an infor-

mation service sponsored and financed by the U. S. Office of

Education and operated by the University of Wisconsin's

Environmental Design Center, Cooperative Educational Research

and Services, and University Facilities Research Center, with

technical support by the Library School and Department of

Computer Sciences. This Clearinghouse specializes in the

dissemination of information about building sited, buildings,

and equipment used for educational purposes. Subject area

coverage is directed toward the study of environmental influ-

ences in education as well as the efficiency and effectiveness

of planning, financing, constructing, renovating, maintaining,

operating, insuring, utilizing and evaluating educational
