Sweltering temperatures and

standing-room only in the school

gymnasium have become almost

as much of a tradition as the play-

ing of Edward Elgar’s “Pomp and

Circumstance” at Hastings High

School commencement cere-

monies. However, as in years

immemorial, the heat and the

crowd did nothing to wither the

enthusiasm of the friends, fami-

lies and teachers and others who

came to observe the ceremony

and wish the Hastings High

School Class of 2013 well.

The Hastings High School

Band, under the baton of district

band director Spencer White, did

indeed play “Pomp and

Circumstance” as the 217 gradu-

ates entered the gym, and then

played the national anthem while

the combined high school choirs,

under the direction of district

vocal music director Matt

Callaghan, led the singing.

Senior class president Olivia

Rose welcomed everyone and

spoke about the influence and

importance of roots in the

Hastings community.

After Hastings High School

Principal Kevin Riggs introduced

the members of the Hastings Area

Schools Board of Education and

administrators on the platform,

2013 Top Scholars Ian Beck and

Kelsi Harden delivered a joint

address, entitled “We’re Not

There Yet,” to their fellow gradu-

ates.

Maxwell Clark introduced the

keynote speaker, Don Schils, the

principal of Northeastern

Elementary and long-time fifth

grade teacher and high school

varsity basketball coach.

During his speech, “It’s

Elementary, My Friends,” Schils

spoke about the many lessons he

learned after high school, espe-

cially after becoming a teacher.

He exhorted the graduates to

make the best use of their talents

and opportunities and to be bold

and make courageous choices.

down memory lane in

“Remember When.”

After caps were thrown

into the air and retrieved and con-

gratulations received from family

and friends received, the gradu-

ates doffed their ceremonial

garb and boarded buses for their

final celebration — the all-night

senior party, sponsored by the

senior class parents.
