Continuing Traffic Problems

Our school’s children’s crossings are located on Yarranabee Road and Braemar Drive. They are part-time

crossings which operate just before and after school hours. When CHILDREN CROSSING flags are displayed,

NSW Health

Last year the NSW Premier’s Department of Health media team contacted our school after hearing about

our healthy canteen initiatives and Kilometre Club. Impressed with what they heard, a visit was arranged to

do a short promotional shoot which is now of the NSW Health website and shared to schools throughout the

state. The video has also been uploaded to our website and can be viewed by clicking on the following link

https://hastings-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/content/doe/sws/schools/h/hastings-p/www/news/2019/5/nsw-premier-s-office---tackling-childhood-obesity.html

Parent Workshop on Behaviour

On Monday evening, I will be hosting a parent workshop on behaviour. The 2 hour program will help you to

help your child/ren now and into the future. Teaching children to be responsible decision makers, resilient

and self-regulated is always a challenge but an essential life skill. Sharing some strategies between home

and school can make a huge difference in supporting children to develop skills in effectively managing their

behaviour and emotions. The workshop will be held in the school library from 5:30 to 7:30pm. Cost is

$10.00 to help cover the cost of print materials.

Bookings are essential.

Thank You

Again, many thanks to the families who have paid their

child’s education resources levy. This levy supplies

your child with everyday classroom resources. We ask

parents to help cover part of the costs.

KINDERGARTEN MOTHER'S DAY PICNIC & PAMPER

Our Kinder mums had a lovely time last Friday being treated by their children with hand & shoulder

massages and fun activities in their classroom. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a picnic lunch in the

sunshine. Thank you to all the mums for coming and we hope you had a lovely Mother’s Day!

OPERATION ART

Every year government and non-government schools

across NSW are invited to participate in Operation Art, an

initiative of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in

association with the NSW Department of Education. The

Operation Art program provides a forum for schools and

students to demonstrate their visual arts achievements

through exhibitions at the Armory Gallery, Sydney Olympic

Park and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Some

exhibited works will eventually be hung at the Children’s

Hospital at Westmead.

Each school can submit four entries and we say “good

luck” to this year’s successful students:

Millie Geddes (5/6S) for her painting titled “The Dot”

Poppy McIntyre (5/6S) “Wonder”

Emily Lyttle (4K) “The Sun” and

Abbie Brown (5B) “The End of Summer”.

FILM by THE BREAKWALL - Extra Screening

We are very excited to announce Mrs Harris has arranged for our school to have our own private screening

of Film by The Breakwall on Friday evening, 31st May. Students from 5H, 5J and 5/6S are again welcome

to walk the Red Carpet at 5:15pm with the screening from 5:30 to 6:30pm. Cost is a gold coin donation at

the door. Seating and standing will be limited but we hope all interested families will come and view the

films made by students from Hastings, Lake Cathie, Port Macquarie, Tacking Point, Telegraph Point and

Westport Public Schools and Hastings Secondary College – Port Macquarie Campus.

Hullabaloo 2019! Please invite your Hastings Public School friends and family

members to like our Hastings Hullabaloo 2019 facebook page so our messages

can reach the school community and beyond. We will keep you up to date with

all the fete news, upcoming meetings, donation requests, volunteer information

and all the excitement leading up to this major fundraising and community event

for our school.

ICAS COMPETITIONS

The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) is run by the University of NSW for

students in Years 2 to 6 interested in Digital Technologies, Science, Mathematics, Spelling, Writing and

English. This year, the format has changed and all tests, with the exception of Year 3 & Year 4 Writing, are

online. The price per paper has increased to $14.50 and the competition will run between 3rd and 19th

September. Further information will be sent home early next term.

SMS ABSENCE MESSAGING

With our new Sentral system, parents will receive a message on the morning their child is late to or absent

from school (unless previously notified). Parents are asked to acknowledge their child’s absence by replying

to the SMS with a short, polite explanation. This then cuts out the need to call the office, write a note to the

teacher or send an email. If you know your child is going to be away in advance you can let the office / class

teacher know and the absence will be recorded ahead of time.

LIBRARY NEWS

Premier’s Reading Challenge

2019 …

The Premier’s Reading

Challenge is now open.

All Kindergarten students will

be participating in this

challenge during their Library

lessons. The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure and enable them to

experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge for each student to read, to read more

and to read more widely.

If your children from Year 1 to Year 6 would like to participate, they have until August 30th to select and read.

Our Teacher/Librarian, Mrs Dobson, has recording sheets available to keep track of the books read and

students have access to a computer to record and update their Reading Log during recess or library lessons.

For more information, go to the official website: https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html

National Simultaneous Storytime …

The National Simultaneous Storytime is held annually by the Australian Library

and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and

illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in

libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and

many other places around the country. On Wednesday, our students will come

together between 10:40 and 11am to read “Alpacas with Maracas”.

Book Fair …

All classes will preview Book Fair next week, and will have the opportunity to fill

in a WishList, and take a catalogue home. Our 2019 Book Fair will run from

Monday, 27th to Thursday, 30th May. We aim to earn enough commission to buy a Film Kit which will be

accessible for all teachers to use with their class. Items SOLD OUT can be ordered and paid for.

BREAK A LEG! Wishing Reuben Reed all the very

best as he stars as “Pugsley Addams” in the Port

Macquarie Players Theatre production of The

Addams Family! The play will run from tonight until

2nd June.

SPORTS REPORTS

State Tennis … Report by Ben Grummitt

Last week I represented the North Coast at the PSSA State Tennis carnival in Inverell. Our team played

well coming 8th place overall from 13 teams. I played really well and I am very excited to try again next

year and vie for a national position.

Congratulations to one of our NC team members, Ruby Pade from Coffs Harbour, who was selected in the

NSW squad.

Touch Football … Congratulations to Manu Carter and Marley Carter for their selection in the Lower

North Coast Touch Football team. The boys will travel to Grafton on Tuesday, 11th June to compete in the

North Coast Touch Football trial. Best of luck to both boys!

Golf … This weekend William Martin will be competing in the North Coast Junior Masters Golf competition

at Kew Golf Club. The tournament is two rounds (36 holes) over Saturday and Sunday and attracts a field

from across NSW as it is one of the higher end competitions for ages 17 and under. William (whose

handicap is 26.4) will also represent Hastings Public School on the 2nd July in the PSSA competition in

Yamba and then in the U12’s NSW State Championships during the July holidays. We wish William all the

very best!

AFL Paul Kelly Cup … Report by Drew de Silva

Last Thursday, Hastings’ first ever AFL squad

competed in the annual Paul Kelly Cup. There were 2

teams; a Year 6 team and a Year 5 team. Many of the

students had never played a proper game of AFL

before. A special shout out goes to Josh Kobelke who

did his job so well that he caused the player he was

marking to fail at doing his job! Josh’s heroics enabled

Hastings to capture a win.

Both teams had some big losses and great wins. As a

newly formed group we are looking forward to

participating next year!

All the players would like to thank Mr Scott and James

Moir from the AFL development team for doing an

amazing job coaching us and organising this for

Hastings!
