“How beautiful are the footsteps of those who bring the good news.” (Rom 10:15-17) The students, staff and families of St. Mary’s warmly congratulate our friend and colleague, Father Nathaniel Brazil, on his ordination to priesthood. We are very proud to have been part of Father Nat’s journey and look forward to travelling the road ahead with him. God bless you Nat. Teresa Neilson D.R.S.

ST JOSEPH’S JOTTINGS -

I would like to acknowledge the wonderful work and generous financial support the Society of St Vincent de Paul has given to our school and families over many years and ask that our families in return assist SVdP by way of donating items, time or money so that they are able to continue their charitable works in the future. This is a special weekend for the wider Catholic Community and we look forward to celebrating our school Mass with Reverend Nathaniel at his first Mass this Sunday. Congratulations and Best Wishes Nathaniel from the St. Joseph’s School Community .

Pyjamas for Flaxmere Children: The Flaxmere Te

Aranga marae and Plunket are so grateful for the donations and the pjs given last Sunday. This will go a long way towards fulfilling their aim of providing every child (aged 0-10) in Flaxmere with a pair for this winter. The boxes are at the back of the Church for any more pyjamas or onesies you’ve brought in this Sunday. Your generosity means we are now able to proceed with a bulk purchase.

REFLECTION FOR ASCENSION OF THE LORD

We can probably all remember someone saying to us, “It’s for your own good.” What was said to be ‘for my good’, usually involved short-term pain, or medium-term discomfort for me. I can’t remember ever thinking, “Yes, they were right, it was for my good!” What would the disciples have thought when Jesus told them he would be leaving them, barely six weeks after his resurrection? It must have been a shock! Even though Jesus assured them it was ‘for their good’ that he was going to the Father, they possibly wished he’d stick around for a few more weeks/months/years. It may not have been much consolation to be told they’d receive power from God to do strange things like speaking in tongues, picking up snakes and swallowing poison. Although they were probably not too keen on those ‘gifts’, the power to cast out demons and heal sick people would be neat. With hindsight, we know that, a few days after the Ascension, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to transform those hesitant disciples and that his leaving was indeed ‘for their own good’. Jesus going to the Father was an essential part of the journey towards Pentecost – and the birth of the Christian Church.
