Deacon Jeff’s Corner

There is one word you will hear for the last time this weekend until Easter, and that word is “Alleluia”. We sing Alleluia before the Gospel, but not as of Ash Wednesday. We are entering a penitential season of fasting, abstinence and almsgiving that should cause us to reflect on what Jesus did for us through his passion, death and resurrection. It also gives us a chance to share in Jesus’ suffering by sacrificing something we enjoy or doing, something out of the ordinary to help others. Whatever way you want to view Lent, it should be a season where things are different in your life. Our Lenten Alms project is giving every person in our parish and the community the opportunity to help the poorest of the poor – starving children in the world – by putting together 108,000 food packs, called Manna packs on April 3-4, right before Palm Sunday. I am very excited about the Feed My Starving Children project for our parish, and I hope you will be generous with your time to volunteer either individually or as a family to help on April 3-4. I also hope you will be generous financially to support this effort. Each Manna pack cost 24 cents to produce. 108,000 packs will cost right around $26,000. We need lots of volunteers and lots of charitable donations to accomplish this, but knowing all of you, I know you will help in any way you can! One more thing: Please make it a priority to experience the

Sacrament of Reconciliation during Lent. You will be able

to feel the forgiveness only Jesus can give, and the

Sacrament will help you not only in your Lenten journey,

but with your life in general. The more you can experience

Reconciliation, the more you will feel Jesus’ presence in our

daily lives. Instead of being nervous or afraid of confessing

your sins to Jesus, come to him with an open, repentant

heart and allow his forgiveness to change your life! A

blessed Lenten season to each one of you!

Deacon Jeff

SHAKE UP YOUR LENT by Deacon Dennis Kozlovsky

I guess it can always be easy to love your neighbor and hate your enemies. After all, that is probably why they are your enemies…you don’t like them. God wants us to love our enemies as we love our friends and neighbors. With Lent right around the corner, maybe that is a great way to offer to God, our love, discipline and sacrifice. Instead of giving up something for Lent, maybe we need to do something, something somewhat difficult and uncomfortable. LOVE YOUR ENEMIES and be nice to the people that are not nice to you. I am not referring just to a simple smile or hello when you see them. I am thinking more along the lines of carrying on a conversation, wishing them well and telling them that you hope they have a wonderful day. Maybe you can even offer up a series of prayers or a rosary for their spiritual good. Maybe we could learn from the example of Paul Miki and his companions. Paul Miki was a Jesuit born in Japan about 1562. He entered the Society of Jesus and preached the gospel to the Japanese with great success. But when persecution of Catholics became oppressive, he was arrested along with 25 others, tormented and crucified on February 5, 1597. The 26 martyrs were all united in a common faith and love for Jesus and His Church. Brother Miki even preached to the people gathered to see his execution. He thanked God that his love of preaching was the reason he was to die. After Jesus Christ’s example, Brother Miki forgave his persecutors. He told the crowd that he did not hate them and he asked God to have pity on them all. Paul Miki and his companions were all canonized in 1862. While our Lenten sacrifice may not get us beatified and

made into Saints, it will surely put a smile on God’s

face and it will also make our prior enemies wonder

what in the world is going on! And that may be the

best way to put a smile on our face. Share the

goodness of the Lord this Lent.

Breaking Open the Sunday Scriptures

Starts back up on March 2nd & 3rd

Everyone is invited, no need to register. We gather in a small group setting and talk about the upcoming Sunday’s readings. We discuss the history behind the readings, the author and the time period. This helps us understand the readings a little better. Then we bring it forward to our lives discussing what it means to us today.

What’s in it for you? Grow in your understanding of the Bible; Sharing faith in a small group setting; Make the readings on Sunday come alive.

Why should I go that deep into Scripture? Try reading Matthew 13:18-23.

We gather in the Fellowship Hall on Monday evenings, 6:30 – 7:30 PM, or on

Tuesday mornings, 8:15 – 9:15 AM. If you are curious, but not sure this is for you or you simply want more information, contact Jerry Berg at 327-0515 or email at [email protected].

Hope to see you there. Jerry Berg
