Deacon Jeff’s Corner
If you have been on our church grounds recently or even around in Bellevue, you may have seen this yard sign. I will take the blame for this sign in our area but I thought it might be interesting to explain the origin behind the “God For a Change” sign.
A friend of mine from Appleton, Pam, who is a retired physician’s assistant, worked with Dr. Edward Bayer, a pediatrician and good Catholic, who came up with the idea. Dr. Ed explained to me that it came to him about four years ago, when we were in the last election. He was out jogging and would see all the political signs in yards. The thought came to him that it might be cool to have a sign in yards that promoted God. How about “Vote for God!” “How About God?” Then the thought “God For a Change” came to his mind. Dr. Ed felt the slogan had two meanings: 1) Instead of this person or that person, how about God for once and 2) We need a change of direction or need to start making better decisions, so how about choosing God? It was something, he felt, all Christians could relate to. I have to say, it worked for me!
One thing led to another and soon Dr. Ed was working with a lawyer to get a trademark in Wisconsin, thinking that any profits could be used for charity purposes. After considerable expense and some “no’s” from Christian (and Catholic) organizations, Dr. Ed learned the business side of this idea was going to be very difficult.
Since then, one of his physician partners purchased “a bunch”, as did my friend Pam, who has been my distributor and I hope will continue to be for as long as necessary.
Dr. Ed said, “The feedback from all has been positive, even those who were not interested.” Some Catholic organizations initially thought the sign might be too “political”. From my standpoint, I know there will be some who disagree, how can including God in anything be too political? If we really believe in our Catholic faith, God should be involved in all our decisions – everyday! The lawyer Dr. Ed worked through said there are many ways one can use this trademark (which he has it for ten years). T-shirts is just one of many other ideas he has at this point.
Let’s make it a point to keep God in our lives on a full-time
basis. For us as Catholics, it begins with the Mass. Whether
here in person, watching Bishop Ricken on Sundays, or a
livestream Mass on our Facebook page or website, make it
a priority to have the Mass in your life at least once a week.
And keep God in your heart always, allowing the Holy Spirit
to guide you in your daily life. Then it won’t be “God For a
Change” but rather “God – Everyday and Always!”

Heavenly Feast By: Deb Wegner-Hohensee
The image of a banquet is one of the most common images used in the Bible to describe the Kingdom of
God or Heaven. The readings this weekend use this strong imagery for us to better understand what is needed for our salvation the simple or not so simple actions steps to enter into the kingdom. Remembering, we also have the gift of ‘free will’ to
respond just as the invited guests had when the king
invited them to his son’s wedding banquet. Considering this today, we are all called/invited to the
Lord’s banquet every Sunday. Some of us say yes,
others say no. It made me think about what is truly important for me; the material things (business) of
this world or where I spend eternity. Seeing in the parable just how the king addresses a guest not appropriately dressed/prepared for the wedding
feast, it stated; ‘He casts him out into the darkness where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.’ I
thought about what my garment might look like. Is my (our) wedding garment appropriate? What threads are woven in. Does it have the yarn of
repentance, as well as the strands of compassion,
kindness, humility, patience, meekness. Do I (we) lead a life serving others, doing good deeds? We all have this obligation to reach out to those around us and
help, serving and doing good deeds, but even more to move them out of their lethargy. By changing their
hearts and mind, enabling all to understand what is necessary for entrance to the Kingdom of God. As the Gospel today shares; ‘Many are invited, but few are chosen.’ Are you a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’?
