Deacon Jeff’s Corner

The final Sunday of the year 2020……... I’m sure anything I write here won’t be adequate to express the range of emotions I have witnessed from all of you this year. We have experienced so much as a parish. For example, we didn’t have an annual picnic just a raffle and no annual live auction just a virtual one. Also consider this: No Palm Sunday, no Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday) and especially no Easter Sunday Mass (except the one we livestreamed in our earliest days of using Facebook). Having to look out at a totally empty church when it should have been full of families from young girls in pretty dresses and young boys with ties on, was to say at the very least, heartbreaking.

Think of all those who were alone (and in some cases, still are), those who lost loved ones with no one to grieve with them and those who needed medical care and were put off for months. When the State of Wisconsin went into a total shutdown, we wondered whether we would be considered an “essential business”. I remember the conversation with Fr. Ryan on this topic and we both decided that if we were told to close by the government, we would remain here and have Mass during the week and on weekends, even if it meant being arrested and jailed. YOU were worth it! GOD was worth it!

Through it all, our parish staff has remained to serve you. We kept the church open seven days a week for anyone to come in and spend time with Jesus. We rang the church bells at noon beginning on Easter Sunday and then continuing on Sundays with it becoming a “COVID tradition”! People even set up lawn chairs in the parking lot and stayed for hours!

Then on the first weekends back, we began initially with a Communion Service followed by resuming in-person Masses. I have beautiful, vivid memories of people coming up for Communion with tears streaming down their faces as they received Jesus for the first time in months. We have been through a LOT this year and we’re not done yet! Above it all, two words remain: HOPE and TRUST. HOPE for a future when we will all be back here, not with masks on and not because the obligation to come to Mass has been reinstated. Rather, we hope for a future when we will gather to celebrate the Mass and everyone is here because they want to be here! TRUST in our God who loves each of us so unconditionally and gives us the free will to choose to make God a part of our lives or try to go it alone. That is true love!

The future here is bright with exciting possibilities you will hear about in the weeks and months to come, my friends! May we stay the course to keep those around us and ourselves safe and healthy.

Blessed New Year to you. My love and prayers are always with you!

Deacon Jeff

A Reflection on Today’s Readings The Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus,

Mary, and Joseph

Christmas celebrations looked different in our house this year. No big family gatherings. Visits occurred, but virtually. Gift opening still happened, but with a lot less chaos. Dinner was served, but with fewer people at the table. The concern about keeping each other safe outweighed the risk posed by being together. One of the things that the pandemic has made clear is the importance of family.

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. In the gospel reading, Luke offers a very human picture of Mary and Joseph: good parents, observant of the law, and concerned for Jesus’ well-being.

They listen respectfully to two of the elders they encounter: Simeon who recognizes Jesus as the messiah, the one who will redeem Israel. They also meet Anna, the prophetess, a widow who devotes her life to worshipping in the temple. She tells others of Jesus’ identity.

It is not difficult to see the hand of God in this gospel story. After all, we read that Simeon is led to the temple by the Spirit. Anna is compelled to proclaim the Good News. And Jesus, Mary, and Joseph? The Holy family returns home to Nazareth where Jesus grew and “the favor of God was upon him.”

Sometimes it is only in hindsight that we can see God working in our lives and in the lives of those we love. The predictions of Simeon will be made clearer in time. But through it all, God will be there, just as God will be with us. -Kathie Tilot is a spiritual director and member of Prince of Peace
