HAVA AT WORK

HAVA wouldn’t exist with-out YOU. Those of you who donate money and time, food to our Pet Food Bank, foster, transport animals, feed stray cats in your neighborhoods, attend our programs and adopt our animals are the only reason there is a HAVA.

The truth is, that unlike many rescue groups in the area, HAVA has no paid staff. Everything we do is done by volunteers. Everything! Our board is small but boy do those folks work hard!

Heidi, who runs the cat

shelter is there for hours a day—as a volunteer. Volunteers answer our phone. Many of our board are out there on rainy nights, crawling under houses trapping a litter of kittens or rescuing an injured dog. Long time board member Donna fosters sick cats and spends several days a month trapping feral cats. HAVA board members answer the call from veterinarians when a stray dog or cat is brought in and needs emergency medical care.

Our new dog coordinator

Dana found homes for 14 dogs and fostered 11 in less than 5 months on the board!

Our president Julie often has 5 or 6 cats or dogs (stray guinea pigs and rabbits too!) at her home. Board member Tammy has rescued a goat, pig and several dogs this year. She spent a week-end re-fencing her

back yard so she could foster a dog with behavior issues. Everyone on our small board works hard to find good homes for cats and dogs

who find their way to HAVA each year.

Because of this, that thank you note we should

have sent was probably set aside to take care of an emergency at the shelter, to trap a stray, injured animal or to find homes for the almost 300 dogs and cats we will help this year.

Everyone who gives their

time at our shelter—we couldn’t do it without you.

Everyone who donates pet food. Who donates time. Who

donates money. We appreciate all of you. Although we may not say thank you enough, please know that YOU are HAVA.

The cats and dogs featured in photos above were all “guests” of HAVA this year! All have wonderful new homes today.

Although the year hasn’t ended yet, we’ve been busy! Here’s a look at what we’ve done SO FAR. And we still have a month to go!

HELP FILL HAVA’S STOCKING!Since HAVA is an all volunteer, non-profit organization we rely totally on individual donations. Everything we do depends on YOUR SUPPORT. And to be honest, we’re running on empty.

In the last 5 years we’ve doubled the number of animals we rescue and services we provide. Five years ago our budget was $75,000 and that was a huge leap from the year before. Today? Our annual budget exceeds $100,000 a year.

Vet expenditures account for most of our expenses. The shelter takes up another piece as do our many spay/neuter programs. Food, litter, vaccinations, cleaning supplies for the shelter, spay/neuters, medical care, flea and worming meds, utilities and those emergencies that

If this area’s free-roaming cats could talk, they might tell you HAVA’s Donna Westrick is a force to be reckoned with! When Donna shows up, fellow felines disappear overnight, returning a few days later with a clipped ear and strange stories about operating rooms. What they don’t know is that Donna, and the volunteers who are helping her trap hundreds of feral cats from Westport to Lebam and Bay Center, aren’t abducting them at all.

Believe it or not, there are several thousand feral cats in our community. HAVA has been spaying/neutering a

come up like needing to replace a heat pump at the shelter so our “guests” are warm in the winter and cool in the summer all take a big chunk out of our annual budget. This year has been particularly difficult and we need your help.

We’ve put together a “Page of Hope” with ways you can support HAVA and we’ve made it easier for you to direct exactly how you’d like us to use your donation.

Take a look at the various ways you can help--whether through a financial donation or volunteering! Any gift

small or large will be a big help and we promise that 100% of your donation will go to the animals. Because of budget constraints, we’ve been forced to turn away animals in need. Help us save them all!

100+ every year but it has not been enough and has been very expensive. That’s why Donna decided in May to create a new and expanded program. She asked the NW Spay and Neuter Center in Tacoma and our sister rescue in Westport-- Coastal Animal Rescue and Adoption (CARA ) for help. Thanks to their support, In the last six months, 164 cats have been trapped, spayed/neutered and vaccinated—all for only $5 each. At this rate, by the end of the year, we will have altered almost 200 cats turning breeding colonies into retirement communities!

SHELTER HELP

SHELTER PACKAGE

WELLNESSPACKAGE

We spend at least $200 in care for a CAT before adoption. The greatest cost for a healthy cat is the expense of spaying/neutering them. We alter more than 300 cats a year before adoption and the cost to spay them can exceed $100. Our adoption fee is only $100 (sometimes less) Your donation will allow us to rescue more cats in the next year.

NIP & SNIP 2 PACKAGE

$100

NIP & SNIP 1PACKAGE

We spend at least $300 in care for a DOG before adoption. The greatest cost for a healthy dog is the expense of spaying/neutering them. Depending on the size of the dog, the surgery may range from $200-$350. Our adoption fee is only $200, sometimes less depending on the dog’s circumstance. This package will help us help more dogs find forever homes in the next year.

$150

CAGESPONSOR

$500We have 18 cages at Harry’s House which are full all year long with kittens, mamas and young and old adults. Between our average cost per cat of $200 including food, litter, vaccinations, meds etc., and the fact our adoption fee is only $100 per cat, our costs per cage add up through the year. By sponsoring a cage for a year, you make it possible for us to keep those cages full.

We do a veterinary check on EVERY cat and dog we rescue. We also vaccinate them, treat them for worms and fleas and any other issue our vets find during their check up. $60 will help pay for their check up and treatment before being adopted. Your support will mean one more dog or cat can be rescued in the next year.

HAPPY CAT PACKAGE

We take good care of our “guests” at Harry’s House, our Cat Shelter. We feed them Science Diet Kitten and/or Cat food only and it’s quite expensive, in spite of the fact we receive a big discount on food from The Dennis Co. Add the cost of litter, bedding and special canned food for sick cats, and it costs a pretty penny to fill those feline tummies! $30 will pay for a month of delicious meals for one kitty!

We go through a whole lot of laundry detergent and disinfectant for our cages--we disinfect every cage after a “guest” is adopted. We use LOTS of paper towels and garbage bags. We use LOTS of dishwashing soap. Our utility bills at the shetler are higher in the winter because we need to keep our guests warm. It all adds up so we could use your support!

Time & Gas

DRIVERSNEEDED

We are desperately in need of drivers with covered pickups, vans or SUV’s who can transport cats once or twice a month from Raymond or Westport to Montesano. The cats will be in traps--all you have to do is pick them up and get them to Monte by 7:30 a.m. The cats are taken every other Tuesday but if you can transport them one Tues a month, that will help alot! Call Donna at 360.581.2029.

FRISKYFUND

The Frisky Fund was established by former President Gail Friedlander to help pay for medical expenses for homeless animals--strays in need of surgery, amputation etc. This year 14 animals have been helped by the Fund for a total of $3800.00 but we’ve received only $420.00 in donations. We’ve taken from our general fund which is running very low. Please help fill the fund!
