In this day and age ofsynthetic materials andquick fixes, it’s com-

forting to know that thereare construction compa-nies that still adhere to tra-ditional methods toensure your homelasts forever. HuaxiaConstruction is oneof those companies.

“In China andJapan, we see manyhistoric buildingsthat were built 1,000years ago, but arestill solid,” said com-pany owner XiangFeng Cao. “Ourcompany would like tohelp our customers buildor remodel their homeslike that.”

According to OVIDHome’s Craig Wong, whohas been so impressedwith Huaxia Constructionthat he still sends referralsto them, “(Cao) doesn’t use

any substitutions, like ply-wood with a wood face. When he builds a home, the materials are 100 per-

cent solid all the waythrough. He wants to dothe job right, the firsttime.”

While Huaxia Construc-tion, a name that repre-

sents China orChinese civilization, does general con-struction residentialprojects from theground up, the com-pany also providesrepairs, remodelingand additions. Infact, the company’svast experience en-ables it to supportcustomers with se-

lecting the right cabinets, flooring, light fixtures andcolors to match individualstyle and living needs.

“Mr. Cao will look at a project andmake suggestions to create a morebeautiful living space and more effi-cient buildings,” Wong explained.“Crown molding, special tile fromChina and custom work on curvedspaces. We have been in awe of someof the creative solutions he comes upwith.

“It’s amazing that he is both creativeand extremely precise,” Wong contin-ued. “If you tell his crew to show up at7:10, they are there at 7:10. It’s comfort-ing to know that they are so reliableand will meet your deadlines.”

Solar

Did you know that in Hawaii our elec-tricity cost is three times more thanany other state in the country? The

reason for this is that the power plant thatmanufactures our energy is the last crudeoil burning plant in the USA.

Keeping this in mind, the Public UtilitiesCommission has mandated that 70 percentof all energy manufactured needs to origi-nate from alternative energy sources by theyear 2030. Those alternative sources comefrom nature — the sun, wind and the ocean.

Unlike most other states, Hawaii has allthree in abundance.

Right now, homeowners have a goldenopportunity to harness these gifts from na-ture, go green, and save money all at thesame time.

By installing a Solar Hot Water Systemyou can save up to 40 percent on your elec-tric bill. By adding a Photovoltaic System, you can virtually eliminate your electricbill altogether. With the savings on the taxcredits offered by the state and the federalgovernment, you can save up to 65 percenton the price of the installment. One cus-tomer summed it up best by saying, “It’slike buying a Mercedes at half price andnever having to put gas in the car again.”

EnergyPro Hawaii has the professionalswho can help you understand the benefitsof solar energy — from installation to a24/7 monitoring system.

EnergyPro Hawaii hosts an Open Houseevery Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call596-2890 for more information, then comeon down and learn about how solar works.

And while there, sign up for a free in-home solar design estimate. After all, there’s never been a better time to gogreen.

6 | HAWAII RENOVATION | JULY 25, 2010 AN ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT PUBLISHED BY OAHU PUBLICATIONS, INC. | ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

Sure you would like to live the fan-tasy this summer, spending a weeklounging at a luxury resort, sipping

colorful beverages, sinking into a plushchaise lounge beside a crystal-blue poolwhile a cool breeze wafts through thefronds of a nearby palm. But there’s thiswhole thing about the economy.

Even though things are getting better, you may still hesitate to spend yourhard-earned or hard-saved cash onsomething as transient as a luxury sum-mer vacation. Instead of splashingmoney away on travel, why not bringthe luxury home by creating a resort-like outdoor environment that will bothenhance your enjoyment and improvethe value of yourhouse?

Improving youroutdoor livingspace continuesto be a good in-vestment. Greatoutdoor livingspaces continue totop the list of most-desired features forboth homeowners and potential buyers. And for what you might spend on a lux-ury vacation, it’s possible to create your

own personal oasis of luxury that youcan enjoy for the entire summer, ratherthan just for a week.

Not sure where to begin? You can addhome-style versions of the high-pricedappointments such as pools and wallmurals that you would find in luxury re-sorts around the world.

Waterr playA pool is a must-have for a high-end

resort. Thanks to kits that includeeverything from the pool walls andliner to the filter, it’s possible tocheaply install an above-ground poolin your backyard. Prices range from afew hundred dollars for basic pools to

a few thousand formore upscale ver-sions.

If a pool is out ofyour budget, or pro-hibited in your neigh-borhood, or youryard is just too smallfor it, consider adding

a different kind of water feature thattakes up less room. Modestly sizedfountains, rain chains, even a bird bath, can all deliver a restful mood and the

charming sound of flowing water.

Sett thee stageIf you don’t already have a deck or

patio, adding one is a great investment. You can go totally over the top, if that’sin your budget, or start with a modestdeck that can be expanded later. If youalready have a deck, consider upgradingit, along with the regular seasonal main-tenance you already do. You can adddesigner touches like metal balusters onrailings and decorative caps on posts.

Accent lighting, built-in seating andfirepits also can enhance a deck’s ap-peal.

Artfull accentsResort designers recognize the power

of a wall mural to transform a spacefrom merely beautiful to exotic. Virtu-ally any smooth outdoor surface canhost a wall mural, thanks to easy-to-mount wallpaper murals available fromwebsites like MuralsYourWay.com.

Remember that sweetchildren’s song thatadvises us to “let the

sun shine in” so we can enjoylife? Update it for today’smodern lifestyle, which getslived in air-tight homes filledwith volatile organic com-pounds (VOCs), and maybewe should add “and let thevolatile gases out.”

Nothing adds beauty andcharm to a room like escap-ing VOCs. And while a vent-ing skylight adds visual dra-ma to a room, it also helps re-move gases, moisture, odorsand other trapped VOCsthrough passive ventilationvia the chimney effect it cre-ates.

Passive ventilation canhelp alleviate “sick house”symptoms that developwhen a house doesn’t“breathe” —or exchangestale indoor air for fresh out-door air. Many items in thehome, from adhesives, up-holstery and carpet to thefurnace, fireplaces and even

pressed wood cabinets andcupboards, can emit VOCsinto your home environ-ment. Short-term exposureto VOCs can causeheadaches, nausea, eye irrita-tion, sore throat and nasal ir-ritation. Venting VOCsthrough a skylight can im-prove the overall healthful-ness of your indoor environ-ment year-round.

Not only can modern sky-lights make your homegreener, healthier and morelivable, they also are now to-tally dependable accordingto Joe Patrick, senior productmanager with Velux. “New-ly redesigned skylights arenow available with no-leakwarranties on not only theproduct but also on the in-stallation, so homeowners nolonger need be concernedwhen they have a properlyinstalled no-leak skylight,”he says.

“Think about the numberof openings in a home,”Patrick says. “Vent pipes,

chimneys, exhaust fans onthe roof, windows and doorsand vent pipes on the walls, and people don’t worryabout them leaking. Modernskylights employ compara-ble or better technologiesthan any of those to keep wa-ter out and are no moreprone to leaking when prop-erly installed and flashed.”

Modern skylights use pre-engineered flashing kits de-signed and matched to workspecifically with shingle, tileor metal roofs, and energyefficient models from leadingmanufacturers are EnergyStar qualified. “Utilizingthese matched flashing sys-tems, plus multiple layers ofwater protection and other

improvements have led to‘No Leak Skylights’ thatcome with a no-leak prod-uct and installation warran-ty,” Patrick says.

Further enhancing the en-ergy efficiency of skylightscan be easily accomplishedwith accessories. A full rangeof blinds and controls isavailable, including Venet-ian blinds to provide styleand comfort, roller blinds todiffuse the light, or blackoutblinds to block the light. Andblinds, like skylights, can bemanually controlled, movedwith a remote control, oreven connected to a homecommand system that con-trols accessories and appli-ances throughout the house.

There are even solarblinds available for certaintypes of skylights that quali-fy for a 30 percent federaltax credit for the product andinstallation — with no capon the credit through 2016.The credit can help you re-coup up to 30 percent of thecost of the blinds and the la-bor to install them. Solarblinds are even more energyefficient because they utilizea built-in solar battery to

power the mechanism thatopens and closes the blinds.

Venting skylights are par-ticularly popular in kitchens, baths, and laundry rooms forventing moisture, heat andcooking odors as well as forbringing natural light tomuch-used areas of thehome. Sun Tunnel tubularskylights are particularly use-ful in entries, hallways, clos-ets, interior baths and othersmaller or confined areaswhere additional naturallight is needed but where tra-ditional skylights may not fitor be practical. Lighting kitsare available for these units, enabling them to do double-duty at night.

Summer is a great time tomake home improvementsthat deliver environmental, economic, emotional andphysical health benefits.Adding a skylight and acces-sories delivers all thosegreen pluses, and a trainedprofessional can install unitsin as little as a day.

To learn more about sky-lights and proper installation,visit veluxusa.com, energys-tar.gov, nfrc.org, or efficien-twindows.org.

Since economic condi-tions have made home-owners more vigilant abouttaking care of their homes, preserving exterior con-crete surfaces, such asdriveways, patios, stepsand walkways, is a worth-while investment. spalled concrete is an eco-nomical alternative to re-moval and replacement.Replacement can cost$3.50 or more per squarefoot whereas resurfacing— using a product such asQuikrete Concrete Resur-facer — costs 25 to 30 centsper square foot. To use:

Thoroughly clean theold concrete to ensure theresurfacer will adhereproperly. This can beachieved using a 3,500 psihigh-duty pressure washerto clear dirt, debris, dustand any other loose materi-als from the concrete.

Use weather strippingto ensure the resurfacerdoesn’t flow into the con-trol or expansion joints. These are the clean linesthat were cut into the con-

crete when it waspoured to allow for thenatural temperature-driven expansion andcontraction of the con-crete. Without joints, concrete will crack.

Mix the resurfac-ing compound and therecommended amountof water in a 5-gallonbucket using a 1/2-inchdrill and paddle mixer. The consistency shouldbe lump-free and flow-able. Sparingly add wa-ter to reach the desiredconsistency.

Saturate the concretesurface and remove stand-ing water from low spots.Pour the resurfacer andspread it with a long-han-dled squeegee. Use thesqueegee to scrub the mate-rial into the surface. With-in five minutes of com-

pletely covering the surfacewith the resurfacer, broomthe surface, making sure allbroom strokes go in thesame direction.

Cosmetic workMinor blemishes like

small cracks can be re-

paired without resurfac-ing. Instead, try using apatching material such theQuikrete Patching Com-pound. Available in aready-to-apply putty, thepatching compound isideal for minor repairs likesmall non-structuralcracks and spalling lessthan 1/4 inch thik.

Homeowners also canfind polymer-modifiedcompounds that bond di-rectly to the concrete sur-face for a smooth repair. These compounds areself-bonding and -curingso no additives areneeded.

Another option for

cracks less than a half inchwide is Quikrete ConcreteCrack Seal, which comesin a quart bottle that makesit easy to pour directly intothe crack. Dry to the touchwithin 30 minutes, thesealant maintains adhesionthrough freeze/thaw cy-cles. Larger cracks may re-quire a more flexiblepolyurethane sealant withincreased bonding powerand durability.

Your lawn is your car-pet year-round — asoft surface to run,

play. and relax on. So whydoes it have all those baldspots and thinningpatches? That wouldn’t becomfortable to walk acrosson your living room rug,so why put up with it inyour lawn?

No lawn is perfect, butevery lawn can be a full, comfortable surface tohang out on. It’s a lot eas-ier to grow luxurious grassthan you may think, andfiguring out how doesn’thave to be confusing. Theexperts at Scotts offer afew tips:

Thee basicsIf your lawn has patches

and holes, seeding can eas-ily help fill in bare spots. Agenerally healthy-lookinglawn with just a few baldspots doesn’t have to be a

challenge; spot seedingwill probably work nicelyfor you. Even if you havetried this in the past, don’tlose hope. Just followthese quick steps and re-member that the keys tosuccess remain the sameno matter what — startwith quality seed, ensurethat the seed makes goodcontact with the groundand keep it moist.

Findingg thee roott off theproblem

Why is your lawn thin? What is the source ofthose bare spots? It’s im-portant to find out what’scausing bare spots so youcan possibly eliminate thecause while treating theproblem. A patch next toyour driveway, an areaunder a tree, a high trafficpath, or a spot often vis-ited by the dog — all theseareas can be riddled with

difficult bare spots, butthey don’t need to be achallenge anymore.

Solvee itt withh seedingFixing a bare spot is ac-

tually pretty easy. All youneed to do is to rake theground and remove thedead grass or weeds. Forbest results apply seedingsoil, such as Scotts TurfBuilder Seeding Soil, overthe area to a depth ofabout 1 inch. Then scatter

some seed down in thearea. Finally, give the grassseed a good watering andremember to keep it moist.

An even easier option isto simply apply an all-in-

one seeding product likeScotts Turf Builder EZSeed. This is the onlyproduct you’ll need, noneed to even cover it orthe bare spot with soil.

Keeping grass seed ade-quately watered has al-ways been the challenge. How do you know howmuch water is too much?Or too little? EZ Seed elim-inates guesswork — whenyou first put the seeddown, water it until it

turns a deep, rich brown. When the color lightens tomilk chocolate, it’s time towater again.

Once you’ve establisheda thicker lawn, be sure to

give it the nutrients itneeds to thrive. Follow afeeding menu appropriatefor your region’s climate. An all-over feeding withlawn nutrients, like ScottsTurf Builder, will keepgrass thriving and preventfuture problem spots. Besure to follow package di-rections on how to apply.Just a couple of times aseason can end up savingyou time and energy in thelong run. In fact, comparedto an unfed lawn, a well-nourished lawn develops a

denser root system that re-quires less watering andtightly knitted grass rootsto help block out weedgrowth, maximizing yourresults while minimizingyour efforts.

By following this simpleadvice, you’ll no longerhave a thinning or patchylawn. Instead you’ll wantto show off your luxuriousgrass carpet to all of theneighbors. So go ahead, take your shoes off andenjoy.
