There are many autumn-flowering shrubs that bloombeautifully in the stretch between summer and winter.Autumn is actually the best time to plant shrubs as theweather is mild and the plants become established moreeasily. Roses can also be encouraged to flower inautumn if you cut them back lightly and fertilize

Lion’s Ear (Leonitis leonurus) - an indigenous shrub withwhorls of orange or cream flowers. It is frost resistant

Bush Violet (Barleria obtuse) - a water wise indigenousshrub which provides a riot of colour in autumn. It bears masses of rose or pale blue trumpets.Sasanque camellia is the first of the camellia family toflower, is evergreen and boasts frilled flowers in white, pink and red with glossy, dark-green foliage.Ribbon bush (Hypoestes aristata) is an indigenous ever-green shrub with lilac, purple or white flowers. It isa tough plant which is frost tolerant and water wise.

TOP TIP: Daffodils look beautiful when planted close toshrubs and autumn is also the ideal time to plant daffodilbulbs. To make planting easier, use a bulb planter from agarden centre. Look for clean, firm and plump bulbs withno obvious root or shoot growth and plant them as soon

Why do leaves change colour? In autumn, leaf colourneeds cold nights to develop, signalling the tree to removeand store green chlorophyll from the leaves. Withthe green gone, all the other leaf colours can be seen, such as red and purple from anthocyanins, and orange andyellow from cartenoids. In warmer areas, trees that should

turn red or crimson may only become yellowor bronze and won’t show intense colour.Choose trees that colour in cool to subtropicalgardens, dark evergreen trees and dark coloured housessuit pale yellow and orange foliage, while lighterhouses contrast with rich reds and burgundys.

February is the ideal time to plant vegetables that can beused for winter soups. You should now start planting:

Carrots - They last for many months in the ground and can.Cauliflower - Sow an early maturing variety and a late

Leeks - Sow in seedbeds and transplant into larger beds
