NATURAL PINK AND BLUE ARGYLE DIAMONDS
I ’m waiting for a stranger to arrive and fix something. It’s the season for flooding, pestilence and broad-shouldered tradesmen.
Two weeks ago, the plughole in my shower made choking sounds until the pipes at the side of the building decided they’d had enough of being strangled by tree roots and exploded.
Today it’s the old gas stove. I lit the griller, it grinned back at me, gave off a peculiar carcinogenic smell and stopped being my best friend.
Before phoning the plumber’s office, I sit cross-legged on my kitchen floor and silently purge myself of any impure thoughts. I’m summoning that special pheromone one needs in order to deal with telephone service difficulties, insurance assessors and plumber’s receptionists.
It’s the same pheromone that informs savage dogs that not only are you not afraid of them, but that you will win.
I dial the number and a female voice, taut with urgency and 60 cigarettes a day, assumes that I stay at home all day and will be delighted at the prospect of a visitor at any time that suits her.
I explain that I’m a working woman, as she is, and together we will find a time that suits everyone. I suggest that, excluding any emergencies such as missing lunch,
running out of cigarettes or her foot falling asleep, that time must be between now and 6 o’clock tonight. “I’ll see what we can do.” She snarls.
I’m cranky because I’m certain that the sea-monkey who promises the plumber will arrive at the designated time, knows he’ll never arrive at that time. I continue my climb to the summit of Mount Crazy-Bitch, where
the rumbling but, until now, dormant volcano will erupt and spill its custard of rage over the entire
landscape at the exact moment when Mr Unsuspecting thumps on my door.
Hours pass. Fee-fi-fo-fum – the sound of giant knuckles rattling on security mesh. I
open the door and duck just as he’s raising his fist to tap on my forehead. I speak to a hairy
chest in blue overalls. I can’t make sentences, let alone try to explain what the problem is. Extending my neck backwards, I make eye contact with the cyclops.
“I’m Jim from Looky Here Plumbers. Believe ya gotta problem with ya grillrr?”
I’m overwhelmed by the stench of tobacco and paint stripper and can’t be held responsible for the drivel coming out of my mouth: “It ignited, then gave off a funny smell like burnt scrotum and then went kaboom.”
People who fix things are very busy, so they’re economical with words.
“See what I can do,” Jim says, simultaneously looking
me over and scratching his chest. He has tools and disposable overalls for S-bend emergencies; Jim is a beast unchained when it comes to plumbing.
I hover around him, asking stupid questions and offering moronic suggestions. Jim says nothing to me, but has words with the stove, then takes me aside.
“This grillrr has a history of abuse and everything about ya, the way ya walk into the room, ya tone of voice and ya finger action on the pilot button, is making it miserable. Lighten up and the grillrr will too!”
I’ve booked in for weekly sessions with Jim. He can never guarantee when he’ll get there, but he reckons it’s a good way of modifying my need to control everything. And for a minimal surcharge, he’s happy to fix any leaks. \

cycle of life
W ell, we nearly lost a world champion there. Shane Perkins, preparing for the Olympics, was riding on the road recently – mixing up the training – when he was nearly
totalled by a truck. “I went out on Tuesday and got run off the road by a truck into a gutter and nearly hit a pole,” he says. “He’s gone past me pretty close. He started to go around me, because I saw his side-mirror came pretty close, and he kept moving over to the left. I caught onto it and hit the brakes and clipped the gutter and clipped the side of the car. It was quite frustrating.”
“Frustrating” is an oft-used sportsperson’s term that can be translated as “spitting bloody chips”.
“Your first instinct when things like this happen is anger, but it’s happened to me that many times it’s more frustrating,” Perkins says. “If he had knocked me off – knocked off anyone on a bike – how are you going to feel?”
Perkins has just dropped a decent news story on us: Olympic cyclist knocked (nearly) off his bike by a truck just months out from the 2012 London Olympics.
But it gets worse. “The week before, I went out for a ride with my wife and a car nearly threw me into a parked car,” he says.
“We were preparing to go around a parked car and signalled to cars to go past us and the cars almost tried to run us into the parked car. Had to slam the
brakes on. Only just got out of that one as well. It makes me think, ‘Do people not realise that we are not protected by three inches of steel’?”
Did it make him want to stop riding on the road?“It makes me think twice every time I go out there.
It takes the enjoyment out of riding on the road. I’m always watching what’s going on because if I have a slip-up and someone even just bumps me and I fall off and do a collarbone or something, I’m out for weeks.”
Since taking up cycling at the relatively late age of 14, Shane Perkins has had a spectacular rise.
“I never really had a big passion for cycling when I was younger. I was always around it with my father being a coach and a frame builder. I was always going to watch racing on the weekend. I knew quite a bit about it, without being too into it,” he says.
“I loved basketball, footy and cricket, played to a high level in basketball. Then the coach started to get really serious with it all. I was only 12 or 13 and I thought I actually wanted to enjoy what I was doing.

It hasn’t all been smooth riding for world champion cyclist Shane Perkins, but at 25, with the Olympics just ahead, he’s now right back on track, writes PETER WILMOTH.

CyCle of life“i want my kids
to enjoy my company and
i want to enjoy theirs.”
“We borrowed a bike and I went down to the local club and started doing some racing and within three months I’d made the Victorian team for the nationals, won a couple of gold medals, broken a few Australian records and really enjoyed what I was doing.
“I got to travel interstate, training with a good group of riders in Carnegie. I was loving it.”
Perkins grew up in Oakleigh, went to school in Murrumbeena and had a “normal sort of upbringing, normal surburb, easygoing, nice people”.
His grandfather William “Polly” Perkins played for Richmond in VFL days under the legendary “Captain Blood”, Jack Dyer. His father, Daryl, played a couple of games for the club as well. Not that it’s a sporting achievement, but he mentions that his cousin Travis Perkins was on Big Brother.
He speaks of a close relationship with his father. “Every father and son have their tests, but those things bring you closer together,” he says.
“Dad and I have quite a close, emotional relationship. He’s always been there for me, always supported me no matter what’s gone on, good and bad, along with my mum, Maureen, as well. There have been a lot of ups and there have been some downs as well.”
This is a good time to mention the “downs”, some of which have caused some embarrassing headlines.
Seven years ago, Perkins, then 18 and just arrived in Adelaide to train at the Australian Institute of Sport, was involved in an incident at a nightclub at 3am. According to the hearing that suspended him for three months and fined him $1000, he had “attempted to gain entry to a nightclub while adversely affected by the consumption of alcohol” and “placed himself in a position of conflict with nightclub staff” and had “consumed alcohol to excess while in training”.
“I look back on that – it’s a funny thing, hindsight,” he says. “You think, ‘Oh geez, I shouldn’t have gone
there at three in the morning’, but I was being an 18-year-old and unfortunately some folks didn’t
take kindly to me. In the wrong place at the wrong time. I’m not pointing the finger at
anyone else, I was there at that time and things happened.
“It was one of those things that could happen to anyone at any time, especially when you’re out somewhere at 3am and there’s alcohol involved.”
Has he any advice to 18-year-olds? “You’ve got to be careful when you go out, careful where you go. Have respect for yourself, I guess. Don’t go overboard; know your limits.”
He’s hit the news for other reasons, too. In 2004 he was suspended for six months after testing positive to a banned substance, but was treated leniently after it was accepted he had bought a nasal inhaler of the same brand he used in Australia, not realising it contained a banned ingredient – methamphetamine.
And, to round out the bad-boy stuff, in 2010 he gave officials a two-fingered salute after being disqualified. He later apologised to the official and took the unusual step of suspending himself. “I am pulling out of the team sprint because it’s respectful for my team,” he said at the time. “I want to set an example for other people in the team.”
It’s reported that Perkins credited family with getting him back on track.
“i ’ve heard this thing ‘back on track’,” he says, a note of exasperation there. “I don’t think I was ever off the track. I think everyone underestimates the fact that I was a young
person trying to deal with being a professional athlete and didn’t have any support or family over here in Adelaide when I first moved here, learning how to live with just myself. Things are difficult.
“I’m glad that it’s happened because I’ve learnt a lot from it. I grew as a person and learnt a lot about life and how things work. Even just the politics of the world as well. And if you don’t make mistakes, how do you learn? The mistake I made was very public and in the media, and it was a mistake being there at that time under the influence of alcohol.”
Perkins, the reigning 2011 keirin world champion, moved in late November from Melbourne to Adelaide with his wife and two children to train at the Australian Institute of Sport in the lead-up to the London Olympics “to find those one-percenters”.
The 2012 UCI Track Cycling World Championships (April 4-8) will attract as many as 350 of the world’s best cyclists from more than 40 countries and is the final qualifying event in the lead-up to the Olympics.
“The London team hasn’t been announced yet, but I’m hoping that my results have proven I’m a consistently good rider,” says Perkins, who will also line up with Scott Sunderland and Matthew Glaetzer
in the team sprint. “I’m looking forward to the World Championships in Melbourne and trying to show the selectors that I deserve a spot at the Olympics.”
Perkins met his wife, Kristine Bayley, at the AIS when she was training there. Bayley (now Perkins) won a bronze medal in 2007 at the World Championships in the team sprint (she retired in 2007).
With her having been a high-level rider, Perkins says, there is empathy for what he needs to do.
“She understands when you’re tired from training and the commitment that you’ve got to make, and she supports me a lot with that,” he says. “I bought her a bike for a late Christmas present, so occasionally if we’ve got a day when the kids are at day care we go out for a light ride together.”
The couple’s son, Aidan, is three, and daughter Mischa is one. “It’s a fantastic life-changing experience,” he says of fatherhood. “I always wanted kids at a young age. This is where life’s taken us and we’re really enjoying it.”
I tell Perkins I worry that it’s not safe riding on Melbourne’s roads, and he is hot on the topic. He agrees it’s dangerous and is weighing up whether he rides on the road any more.
But he doesn’t believe cyclists should be registered He supports a form of registration, possibly a Cycling Australia licence for, say $30, and riders should do a half-day course on road etiquette.
“We’re a nation that is becoming extremely overweight, it’s fair to say. They’re getting on their bikes, they’re getting on the fitness trail, loving their riding.”
He can understand frustrations riders and drivers feel. “We have the essential skills to handle ourselves on the road; we ride together closely so that cars can pass.
“Where motorists are getting annoyed is when people are starting out on a bike they might not know what the road rules are for bikes.
“It is a two-way street. You’ve got some riders who think they own the road and some cars who think (they do). Something needs to be done, whether it’s more information for new people riding a bike. And the same for people in a car.”
Perkins sounds like a pretty level-headed young guy these days. Two days after the interview Perkins rang me, concerned that his “incidents” would not be accompanied by context. He does not deny he’s had some rough patches, he just wants to ensure they are put into perspective, which is fair enough. And for those youthful lapses he wants no one else blamed but himself.
I suggest that parenthood is a good way to grow up pretty quickly. “I’m still a kid among my kids,” he says. “You’ve got to be the parent sometimes, but I want my kids to enjoy my company and I want to enjoy theirs.”
Is he ever exhausted? “Sometimes you feel like you can run through a brick wall. And you feel great and then, all of a sudden, you get knocked over by that brick wall and you go ‘Why?’
“Without looking at it in a negative way I’ve got a lot on my plate now. I’m trying to do my training, trying to provide for my family financially, trying to be a father and a husband. There’s a lot going on. Sometimes you get run down, sometimes you have tough days and you’re all the richer for it.” \

DECANTER \ By Jove, it’s Ben thomas and the savoury set
A s the days get cooler and the nights longer, my drinking habits tend to reflect the change of food served around the dinner table.
Autumn treats, such as mushrooms, root vegetables and game, that come into season call for wines with deeper flavours and, in the case of reds, bigger tannins.
I always think of sangiovese as being a rather autumnal wine, with its earthy, plum, cherry and chocolate flavours that match perfectly the seasonal foods. Drying tannins and bright acidity help match rich meaty dishes perfectly.
Sangiovese, which gets its name from the Latin sanguis Jovis (blood of Jove or Jupiter), is Italy’s
most widely planted grape. Here in Australia it is being grown in greater numbers, and the wine
made with greater skill, than ever before. It grows well in Australian regions that
produce shiraz but, disappointingly, there have been plenty of sangiovese wines produced in the past that taste just like shiraz.
Sangiovese is naturally light in colour and the temptation to create a dark, dense wine just like shiraz seems to have been too much for some producers.
There’s still a few of those heavy-handed examples out there, but as vignerons work out which regions best suit the grapes and winemakers better understand how to treat them, Australian sangiovese is starting to taste a lot more like, well, sangiovese.
In a recent line-up of local sangioveses, there seemed to be two distinct styles: fruit-forward, savoury wines with high drinkability that are best drunk young; and a more structured style with high acidity and drying tannins that need either extra time in the bottle for the tannins to settle, or a big piece of red meat to complement them. Both have merit.
Sangiovese is also well-suited to making a good rosé – the sour cherry notes and savoury tannins are just the thing for a refreshing pink drink.
It is the main grape in chianti and, in Italy, is often blended with French varieties, including cabernet
sauvignon. Blending sangiovese with slightly sweeter wines helps build up the palate structure (sweet receptors are on the tip of the tongue) and create technically better-structured wines,
perhaps at the risk of losing some of sangiovese’s often rustic charms.
In Italy there are rules that govern how much sangiovese must be present in the wine (in the case of chianti classico, it is a minimum 75 per cent). But there is an exception: the development of the
beefed-up, so-called “super Tuscan” wines that threw
out all the rules to create big, bold wines that are popular around the world, particularly in the US, where big is best.
Not to be outdone, we’ve adopted and adapted the blend in Australia,
often mixing sangiovese with shiraz. It’s a blend that works well and has a strong future here, especially at the cheaper, quaffing end of the market.
As Australian drinkers are increasingly looking for more savoury wines over fruit bombs, sangiovese is a grape that is becoming an important wine in the landscape of Australian wine.
It is increasingly being accepted as a mainstream wine, too. Acceptance tends to come with a nickname, and the wine is now often referred to as Sangio – just like a new mate from a foreign land. \

The name Firechief refers to the taming of the wood-fired pizza stove. The venue isn’t a renovated fire station, but it feels like one. There are high ceilings, industrial fittings and truck-sized front windows. Yellow-painted metal beams frame the room, which has red, white and yellow floor tiles and whipped-cream paint. Recycled timber panels adorn the walls and mismatched rectangles wrap around the front counter. Wooden rolling pins are pegs for a quirky coat rack, but eyes eventually turn to the huge timber- and-brass light fitting that hangs on low ropes in the centre of the room. \
food \ Leanne toLra reviews FirechieF Pizzeria
i t’s lunchtime on Thursday and the scales are tipped slightly in favour of patrons over the enthusiastic staff at this extravagant suburban pizzeria.
Boasting a trio of ovens – wood-fired, twin deck and conveyor belt – a fabulous industrial fit-out and a prime Hawthorn East location, you’d expect three-month-old Firechief to be a little more crowded. It’s the sort of place and space that inner-east residents would be likely to embrace, but perhaps more in groups, of an evening.
This is the second of six Paul Mathis venues to have caught our attention. We’ve already told you about Coffeehead, a bold caffeine-inspired venue about a kilometre away. The others are Akachochin, The Sharing House, both at South Wharf, Goldilocks (at the rear of Firechief) and Henry and the Fox, in Little Collins Street, are on our radar in coming months.
Mathis (ex-Taxi, SOS, 100 Mile Café) has stepped back into the industry with a flourish after five years away.
He sent head chef Gabriel Espinoza and head pizza chef Daniel Barrese to Naples to attain accreditation from Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana – an international body established to protect the heritage and tradition of the Neapolitan pizza.
There are only three other accredited chefs in Australia (one at 400 gradi in Brunswick) and about 370 in the world permitted to use the DOP (Denominazione di Origine Protetta, or controlled designation of origin) certification.
Barrese (ex-Ladro) says that even after 15 years of making pizza there were still things an experienced pizzaiolo could learn. “Sure, Neapolitans are particular about their pizzas, but the passion is something they live with every day. A lot of it is about the people themselves and how a son learns the traditions of his father, and a father learns them from his own father,” he says.
Pizza draws myriad opinions and passionate debate: thick crust, thin crust, hand-stretched, stone-crisped or pan-crisped, heavy topping, thin topping.
The boys at Firechief have all bases covered. Their three Italian-made ovens – a Valoriani volcanic-clay wood-fired number, a Moretti twin-deck, stone-based model and a modern conveyor-belt oven – each cooks at different rates and temperatures.
Select your pizza according to its cooking method. There are eight varieties from the Valoriani, cooked at 400 degrees for 90 seconds, 10 from the Moretti, at 360 degrees for four minutes, and 10 conveyor-belt choices, cooked at 340 degrees for six minutes. Barrese says that all bases are made with the same dough recipe, which, according to the DOP tradition, comprises 00-flour, yeast, salt, purified water and no additives.
We ordered one pizza from the wood-fired oven and one from the Moretti, which was more than enough at lunchtime. Besides, the conveyor oven list offered more run-of-the-mill choices such as Hawaiian, Mexicana and Aussie, likely to please children and suburban takeaway pizza fans.
From the Moretti oven, our prawn and pancetta pizza was covered with a cloud of fior di latte (white mozzarella) capped with tailed translucent whorls of tiger prawns and crisp, auburn curls of pancetta, topped
with a mojo dressing (onion, garlic, cumin, oregano, salt, pepper, orange and lemon juice) and a tangle of rocket. Its thin base was airy and delicately puffed, with just enough chew to give it texture, particularly around the edges. Close enough to pizza perfection for me.
Could a wood-fired DOP pizza be any better? From a list that included margherita, marinara-vera,
sorrentina, romana and friarielli (pork sausage), we chose the sopressa pizza. Its San Marzano tomato base was topped with a thin layer of mild casalingo salami, a generous handful of basil leaves and a whiff of chilli. The base was equally thin but, flattened by the moisture of the tomatoes, didn’t have quite the same air and lift as the Moretti oven pizza. Its topping was divine and its outer edges were chewy and slightly charry, but it was a little drier than our first pizza and a few mouthfuls were quite scorched, ensuring preference for the first pizza.
There are other offerings on the menu besides pizza, including an excellent companion salad of heirloom and oxheart tomatoes, fior di latte, basil, seeded cucumbers.
For starters there’s an antipasto platter or grilled sardines on toast with harissa, and mains include a few pasta dishes, crumbed pork cutlet and crispy-skin snapper. All bound to keep everyone in the family happy on a busy Friday night. \

Princess Elizabeth, Buckingham Palace, March 1945.
For his last wartime sitting at Buckingham Palace, Beaton revived the allure of his pre-war photographs. His new studies of Princess Elizabeth, published in February 1946, evoked the same dreamy atmosphere as the portraits of her mother that he had taken in 1939. Backlighting was used to create a bright aureole around Princess Elizabeth’s shoulders and hair.(GElatin silvEr Print. CollECtion: viCtoria and alBErt MusEuM. © v&a)
Princess Elizabeth and Prince Charles, Clarence House garden, September 1950.
Princess Elizabeth and her family lived at Clarence House between 1949 and 1952. Just as newspaper readers had responded enthusiastically to Beaton’s wartime portraits of royalty, they were moved by the intimacy of the studies of the young royals. Beaton wrote in his diary at this time:“Prince Charles was at the stage when he was interested in everything: a live wire, he never flagged in energy, even when those around him were exhausted. One minute he was up on a window-sill, giving an unexpected treat to the passers-by below, pulling at the curtain cords; the next he was climbing on to the sofa to take the cigarettes out of a silver box; then he would be absorbed with interest in the working of his mother’s snapshot camera.”(GElatin silvEr Print. Queen Elizabeth II, Buckingham Palace, June 2, 1953.
on the morning of June 2, 1953, 3 million people lined the streets of london between Buckingham Palace and Westminster abbey to witness the procession of the Gold state Coach to the corontation. For many, the coronation represented the beginning of a new age. it was a time for optimism and innovation that the press termed “the new Elizabethan era”. after the ceremony, Cecil Beaton returned to Buckingham Palace for the official portrait sitting. in this glittering portrait the Queen wears the imperial state Crown. the Queen holds the sovereign’s sceptre with the Cross in her right hand, balanced by the sovereign’s orb in her left. on her right hand she wears the Coronation ring, a symbol that the sovereign is “wedded” to the state. on both wrists are the armills, golden bracelets signifying sincerity and wisdom.(Colour Print. I t was 70 years ago that Sir Cecil Beaton’s camera lens first focused on a 16-year-old Princess Elizabeth. Since then, the same lens witnessed the transformation
from teenager to Queen, to doting mother and head of the Commonwealth.
Now Australia has the rare opportunity to observe the life and times of the second-longest serving British monarch, at the Art Gallery of Ballarat.
The exhibition features nearly 100 portraits by Beaton over 30 years, showcasing the grandeur of official portraits to more intimate family photographs with her children as well as rarely seen images. Interspersed throughout the collection are extracts from Beaton’s personal diaries and letters, describing the working practice of a royal sitting and the immense preparation required to capture the monarch at her most regal.
Art enthusiasts will also be able to explore the shift in Beaton’s photographic style, from early 18th-century rococo-inspired portraits to the more refined photographs of the 1960s.
The collection coincides with Australia’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations as the Queen celebrates her 60th anniversary on the throne. \

in the summer of 1968, Beaton photographed the Queen in anticipation of his forthcoming exhibition at the national Portrait Gallery. it was his last sitting with the Queen, although he later took photographs of other members of the royal family. the Queen wears the lover’s Knot Brooch and the vladimir tiara, which had both belonged to her grandmother, Queen Mary. the Garter star was originally a present from the royal navy to King George vi on his marriage. the king gave it to his daughter at the time of her investiture with the order of the Garter in 1947.(GElatin silvEr Print. BOOKS \ IN THE ALASKAN WILDERNESS, A STAR IS BORN, SAYS CORRIE PERKIN.
Eowyn Ivey lives in rural Alaska with her husband and two small children, works in a bookshop, and writes fiction in her spare time. Last
month her first novel, The Snow Child, hit the shelves and already Australia’s indie bookstores are reporting solid sales.
The Americans and Brits, meanwhile, have gone nuts about the book. It was on The New York Times bestseller list for four weeks and was selected as one of Amazon’s February best books of the month.
Says The Washington Post: “How delightful then to find this lovely first novel inspired by a Russian folk tale.’’
The Christian Science Monitor declares: “While fairytales don’t normally run on so long, Ivey peoples hers with kind-hearted characters it’s a pleasure to spend 400 pages with.’’
Across the Atlantic, the critics also declare the book a hit. “Her (Ivey’s) tale charmingly combines the real and the fantastical,’’ (The Guardian); an “enchanting tale of love, hope and survival in the frozen North’’, (Daily Mail).
The snow child in Ivey’s story is a young girl called Faina, who arrives unexpectedly at the Alaskan farm of a childless couple, Mabel and Jack. Mysterious little footsteps in the snow and the theft of a scarf and a pair of mittens are the first indicators that Mabel and Jack have company.
Their remote mountain farm has few visitors; the story is set in the 1920s and communication with the outside world is sporadic. But this suits the couple, who are still grieving over the death of their baby 10 years earlier and who moved to Alaska to escape the raised eyebrows and constant questions of well-meaning family members.
Faina’s arrival changes the tempo of the couple’s solitary life. But despite the joy she brings, Mabel is constantly reminded of a Russian fairytale about an old childless husband and wife who make a daughter out of snow. She cannot shake off her fear that one day Faina, like the snow child in the fairytale of her youth, will disappear forever when the weather becomes warmer and winter turns to spring.
Ivey maintains this tension successfully throughout the novel. And although the final pages lack the fullness of previous chapters, her story holds us in its spell right until the end.
The hero of this book is the Alaskan landscape. Those of us whose knowledge of this desolate region is limited to Sarah Palin, huskies dragging sleighs, and reruns of Northern Exposure will delight in Ivey’s descriptions of the countryside she knows so well. Let’s hope this is not the first novel she sets in this beautiful and exotic part of the world.
Ivey’s debut novel shows skill and talent. She is the kind of first-time author whose efforts will be rewarded by bookshop owners who decide to take a punt on an unknown.
Listen to your booksellers as they hold this little gem in their hands, outline the synopsis and recommend you read it. Their passion will be persuasive. \

Emylia Hall’s own bio reads like a novel: daughter of an English artist and a Hungarian quilt maker, she grew up in Devon, worked in a London advertising agency after university, then moved to the French Alps to work at a ski resort. There, she decided to take up writing. Book of Summers is her first novel, and although clunky in parts (too many first-person references in the first 50 pages), it is an engaging story and one that will win fans, particularly among the under-35 female demographic. Following a family death, London-based Beth Lowe is drawn back to the childhood summers she enjoyed in Hungary via a family photo album. Her story will stay with you. \
We thought British writer Alan Hollinghurst’s 2011 novel The Stranger’s Child was going to quietly retire into the bookshop’s backlist section with only our staff and a handful of customers among its Melbourne fan club. But we are delighted that the novel, which was longlisted for last year’s Man Booker prize, has been repackaged with a more attractive cover at a lower price and is already notching up strong sales in the local indie bookshop marketplace. Hooray, we say. The story of young poet Cecil Valance’s literary and emotional legacy raises many questions about what makes good art, and how something quite mediocre can be reinterpreted and reassessed after its creator dies suddenly … as indeed can the creator. It is certainly worth the effort. \
The mid-20th-century golden era of Australian tennis would never have dawned if it hadn’t been for Sir Norman Brookes, the country’s first Wimbledon winner and a man once described by prime minister Robert Menzies as “the most remarkable single human in the history of this game”. The son of a Bendigo gold-rush millionaire, Brookes was born in 1877 and quickly became a local tennis identity, eventually playing 39 Davis Cup matches and winning the Wimbledon men’s singles title in 1907 and 1914. In 1926 he became the first president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia, a position he held for 28 years. During this time, Brookes made a significant contribution to the nation’s fledgling tennis culture, despite frequent clashes with some players and officials. Tennis fans will find this a worthy tribute to one of the sport’s great heroes. \
How extraordinary that a book written by an American about good manners and parenting – and why French families have the right formula – is doing so well in Australia. It reminds us that raising well-behaved children is an international preoccupation among Gen X and Y parents, and that any credible tip is a welcome one. Druckerman, a New Yorker who moved to Paris with her family and observed her well-adjusted, non-demanding French friends’ kids, tells us that “Attendez!” is one of the first commands a French toddler hears. Trust us, there are some important tips within these pages. Go forth and chill! \

it is the quintessential Edwardian house, from its original stained-glass and leadlight windows to its multigabled roofline
and floor plan. It’s also an example of giving a contemporary twist to a classic
house and coming up with a winner. This pretty elevated Edwardian is stylish and
practical. Which is what you get when the owner is a mother of three who is a professional stylist and decorator with a great eye for colour. She knows what works, and it’s all here. Four bedrooms include the main downstairs with en suite and walk-in wardrobe – and a very pretty window seat that lends itself to sitting and looking out to the front garden. Upstairs there are three bedrooms with another bathroom. All beautifully styled with desks and built-in wardrobes, shelves and storage. All light and bright. The living zones are large, with high ceilings and lots of Edwardian flourishes, from the ruby red and emerald green in the original windows to the tiles surrounding the house’s three open fireplaces.
Best of all, this house works. And it does so without having stripped the place bare and turning it into a shrine to minimalism.
The floor plan is typically Edwardian, with an entry from the side of the elevated front verandah and a hall that takes you on a journey from the formal to the informal. Interiors include warm tones of deep chocolate through to creamy whites, all brought together with the original Baltic pine floors.
The study at the front of the house is pure Edwardian with its corner bay window and a smaller decorative window. Red-and-green glass and the pretty fireplace evoke the period, yet it is a contemporary “work from home” space with desk and a wall of built-in storage.
Still at the front, a sitting room with an open fireplace connects to the dining room, which in turn opens to the kitchen/living zone and the outdoor entertainment area.
The real star of this house is the open-plan living and kitchen hub. This is where the designer/owner has used all those design skills to make the space work, from work benches to people flow. She opened up the kitchen, ripped out what was there and reconfigured the space.
The result? Practical and very, very stylish. A large square island bench allows one of the vendor’s daughters, who loves cooking, to make a cake on one side while mum preps the dinner on another, something that can be difficult when the island bench is narrow or has a couple of sinks in the middle of it.
A large Falcon stove with electric oven and gas hotplates occupies centre stage between the Blum soft-closing drawer system and cabinetry. And this system is worth every cent. Ergonomically friendly drawers hold pots, pans, plates and cups; even corner cupboards, traditionally the home to dark corners
and lost items, have drawers that slide out; high-end appliances, including dishwasher and Liebherr fridge and ice maker, are integrated with the cabinetry. These features, including the Calacatta marble on the bench top and splashback, are quietly elegant. Rather than screaming “look at me”, this is a kitchen where you need to stand back, take your time and appreciate it.
Large sliding glass doors connect the informal living area to the north-facing outdoor entertainment zone. Merbau, more familiar as a decking timber, makes a smart side fence. Steps lead up from the entertainment area to the swimming pool. A lush lawn is another pleasant surprise.
All the expensive and hidden details have been taken care of here. New ducted heating, new, quiet, evaporative cooling in the three upstairs bedrooms and new solar heating for the swimming pool are big-ticket items that should provide a level of comfort to prospective buyers. \
ready, Willing and gabledStyle is as style does, and this house does it with all the big-ticket items you’d expect for comfortable living, writes MARIA HARRIS.

At dusk, the dappled light through the trees turns lime green against the purple sky. This is one of the many delights about living at 8 Yarra Braes Road – and just one of the factors that make this mudbrick property so
complete in its beauty. The names behind this property read like an honour call
of Eltham greats. It was designed by John Pizzey, built by Alistair Knox and is bound by landscaped gardens of Robert Boyle. Even the intricate wrought-ironwork – the stairs, railings and candelabra – is by the same artisan who worked on Monsalvat’s great hall. In true Knox fashion, every room connects to the outdoors via vast glass doors.
The darkness of the heavy, reclaimed timbers is offset by natural light streaming through the clerestory windows. Knox saw fireplaces as the focal point to a house and a means of bringing people together. There are four throughout, including in the main bedroom on the loft-like second storey. Ideal for families, the four other bedrooms are tucked away in their own accommodation wing. The bathrooms and kitchen have all been recently updated, but in a rustic style sympathetic to the rest of the property. The one-hectare grounds impress almost as much as the house.
A floodlit tennis court is bound by tangled gums and rambling rock gardens. The three-metre-deep pool mimics a bush billabong. It rests beneath a large barn that houses a large garage, workshop and studio. \ liam carter
It’s palm trees, rather than pines, that take pride of place at No.75 Pinehills Drive. The established tropical-style garden has palms, ponds, yukkas and low-maintenance grasses. The location, moments from the
Greensborough shopping precinct, is part of this property’s appeal. The interiors have been immaculately finished with gleaming timbers, a stylish neutral palette and high ceilings with downlights. The lounge and dining area extends towards a meals hub served by a kitchen with a large island bench, porcelain splashbacks and stainless steel appliances, including a 900-millimetre oven. Dine on the four-metre-deep covered deck. Accommodation is smartly zoned with two bedrooms and a bathroom downstairs, ideal for a nursery or home office. Upstairs, there are three more bedrooms, each with walk-in wardrobe, and a second bathroom. The lower level includes a double garage, workshop and lots of storage. \ liam carter
This property has all the peace and quiet, not to mention the prestige, of an Eltham address, all within the coveted St Helena College zone. The kids could easily walk to school along the hilly, bush-cloaked
backstreets. There is room for the whole clan here. It has five bedrooms, four of which share a large family bathroom with spa and separate toilet. The main bedroom has an en suite and walk-in wardrobe. This 1000-square metre property has a large backyard dotted with established gum trees. Take it all in from the deck sheltered by a vine-draped pergola. You can also relax on the front terrace, which is protected by a new covering. Inside, there are two large and light-filled living spaces – the family room, and the lounge and dining room, which opens to the kitchen. The laundry is nearby. A spiral staircase just inside the front entrance leads down to a good-sized workshop or cellar and the double garage. \ liam carter

In 2001, this house underwent a major transformation. It abandoned its past as an ordinary 1970s brick veneer, and stepped into the 21st century as a sleek and sophisticated residence fit for modern living.
The mastermind of the metamorphosis was Carlton-based architect Robert Simeoni, whose work is regularly lauded at the highest levels. Simeoni is known for his ability to reconfigure floor plans to create spaces rather than rooms. The new-look floorplan here defies convention, but never at the expense of liveability. The dual lounge rooms are purpose-designed for intimacy. They can be closed off with dividers – to create a cinema room – or

A laundry is concealed behind the full-height tan cabinets and gleaming Smeg appliances. Four sets of timber-framed double doors connect the main living space to a deep back verandah, which overlooks the large pool, paved poolside terraces and manicured lawns.

For 29 years, the original owners have maintained this property with the utmost care and attention. Set behind a manicured front garden, the house has several living areas. A lounge and kitchen are at the
entrance. This was a result of an extension that now provides the perfect set-up for independent living. A nearby bedroom has an en suite and walk-in wardrobe. The main hub of the house is at the rear of the block. The family area has blush-coloured carpet and a gas log fireplace. A special feature is the stained-glass window where a colourful kookaburra motif was designed by the owners and provides lovely shades of natural light in the morning. The timber kitchen and dining area are nearby. Two bedrooms are near the meals area while another bedroom is at the front. One bedroom is set up as a study. The laundry opens to the undercover outdoor area. It provides the perfect place to entertain and admire the water feature set among the landscaped garden. There’s even room for a veggie patch and garden shed. \ bianca villarosa
This three-bedroom family house is in a tranquil court where children play outside after school and lifetime friendships are likely to be forged. Jarrah floors lend contemporary style to the living and meals
area, while the lounge has views over the court. In the kitchen, up-to-date granite benchtops and splashbacks add contemporary style and a breakfast bench is the perfect spot for quick snacks. The kitchen looks out to the revamped covered deck. A second outdoor area is paved and there is plenty of lawn space, but the backyard doesn’t stop there. More decking surrounds an above-ground pool – the perfect place to cool down on warmer days. All three bedrooms have built-in wardrobes. The main, with taupe-coloured walls, has pool views and is close to the recently renovated bathroom with pale-grey walls and a claw-foot bath. Split-system air-conditioning, a workshop and ample off-street parking are more features. The house is close to the Aberdeen Road shops, Macleod station and Greensborough Secondary School. \ bianca villarosa

Most of us flick through lush house-and-garden magazines and soak up Grand Designs while idly dreaming of possibilities. Then there
are those who meticulously clip, file, marshal and process ideas and go out and build a new home with the precision of a well-oiled military campaign.
Custom builder G.J. Gardner Homes Melbourne Eastern Suburbs is building new homes for two such powerhouses who knew what they wanted as they had been researching and thinking about it for years.
Gardner director Michael Krause says such clients are rare jewels and a delight to work with as they have already thought through many of the processes and decisions required in preparing to build a new home.
“They are sophisticated, creative and highly intelligent people who love design and really enjoy the whole process. They’re highly motivated and organised and we can work collaboratively with them to help achieve their dream of an exceptional new home that is exactly what they want.”
The two women in question are at different life stages and building very different homes but they share a love of design, strong creative flair and a highly organised approach to getting exactly what they want. Both also praise G.J. Gardner Homes for having the right approach to help them.
Tracy Schwarz has two young daughters and after renovating five years ago realised the only way she would get her dream home was to build it.
At that moment she switched into researching, collecting, thinking and designing so that when they made the decision to go ahead she knew what she wanted as her files of swatches, ideas, samples and layouts were ready to go.
It took Schwarz eight months to find G.J. Gardner Homes after speaking to and evaluating many building companies and decided to go ahead with them just as they purchased their site.
On hearing their purchase offer had been accepted while on holiday, she went straight out and bought paper, pencils and new folders.
“With a glass of wine in hand, I drew up the house. It didn’t take long as I knew what I wanted.”
Her precious collection of folders and her sketch came to her first meeting with G.J. Gardner Homes, and this September Schwarz and her family will move into their sleek, contemporary 90-square dream home.
“Designing a home is an accumulation of your life experience from things you have seen to places you have
been. I had done at least a full year’s work thinking
about a new home,” Schwarz says. Her penchant for design
reaches back to a high-school project when she put together her
first swatches and samples. She’s been at it ever since, refining her methodology; and
now her meticulous files are the reference bible for her new home. They cover every aspect from electronics through to external façades and colour schemes to pool fencing. Her furniture is bought and in September it will be placed in her new home according to the layout she has already devised.
“Thanks to the amazing people at G.J. Gardner Homes and my planning, my dream home will be finished in September and I’m not rushing about or stressed out. I love working with them because they are a one-stop shop. I didn’t have to go to a surveyor, engineer, architect or town planning because they do all of that.”
When Theresa Weiss lost her husband four years ago, they had been living on 0.4 hectares of land in Frankston South in a house and gardens that had been a work of love for herself, her husband and their award-winning landscape architect son, Chris.
The gardens reflected travels with adult children in Europe and were a seamless blend of Mediterranean formality and rusticity with modern Australian design.
But Weiss says she knew that after the loss of her husband she needed to forge her own identity, and creating a new home was part of that. She began thinking through what her new home would be like, collecting ideas and images and designing spaces.
When Chris Weiss and his two siblings were ready to let go of the gardens he had worked on with his father, he told his mother he would help her replicate their feel
in a new home. So naturally the garden is a vital part of the new build, with European touches providing inviting and elegant aspects throughout the house.
The front entry will look through to an external reflection pond, wrapped on three sides by the house. Entry to the main bedroom will look directly to a window framing a garden vista featuring a large urn.
Theresa, a businesswoman with Italian heritage and a strong sense of family, knew exactly what feel and elements she wanted in her new home. She has always enjoyed designing living spaces, painting and drawing.
“I knew I wanted warmth and richness in colours and texture and a home that would welcome my family and friends. I wanted a loggia in the garden, a commercial kitchen-quality butler’s pantry, a studio and double glazing to keep out the harsh Australian sun. And I wanted it to be really me, which is hard because I keep evolving, but that is what is exciting,” she says, laughing.
Theresa began talking to a lot of builders but found they wanted to do more of what they had already done rather than what she wanted. She was almost at the stage where she thought she wasn’t going to find what she wanted when she came across the Gardner team. They put her ideas to their architect, who came up with a plan, which, with some refining, has thrilled her.
“They have made it easy for me and worked with me. I am a novice at building but Trish Henderson from G.J. has been amazing at supporting me through the process. I wanted someone to take all the responsibility for the physical building so I can focus on the interiors, and I was confident to do this with them.” \
