A TRRHENDOUs FINANCIAL SUCCESS.

He wanted to show them how it was being done. The Whole-sale Society was established in I864, because of the hostility oftraders —hostility was expected evbrywhere in Lincolnshire andYorkshire at that period. Their capital in the first year was$7,rgz, and their sales amonnted to $7,75o a year. To-day theircapital was gz6, 5oo,ooo, and the profit was $46z,46q. Thereserve fund was over one-and-a-quarter millions sterling. Uponthe top of that was its banking business, carried on and managedin the interests of the retail societies. Last year the turnoverwas j'I36,5I5,ooo. During the time when the bank rate wentup to 6$ per cent. , and when people in the city were having topay a good bit for their liquid capital, the Co-operative Societygot theirs for 5 per cent. froni their own bank. (Hear, hear. )That showed the power of Cooperation so far as capital wasconcerned. They had established large and most importantindustries. They' had the soap works where they producedsoap by the finest machinery, and coBIIucted by qualified chemists.who were receiving large salari'es; -At-Cnunpsall was the finestbaking machinery of its kind, m thc world& and the only biscuitworks in the world with an nj,ht-hour, day. Then there wasthe ladies' underclothing, etc.i department, and here the goodswere produced against' the conjpctftion of the worst sweatingcentres.

MR, MCINNEs said:THE OLD AND THE NEW CO-OPERATION.

Co-operation, as exemplified by the pioneers of Rochdalestarted 67 years ago, and was designed by them to bring abouta more equitable distribution of wealth. These men set forthcertain lines by working upon which they hoped to obtain andcontrol capital to be used in the interests of the masses of thepeople. Now, 67 years ago, the conditions of industry in thiscountry were very different from what they were to-day. Thedomestic system of manufacturing predominated from oneend of England to the other. That was the characteristic ofindustry, practically, in the country at that period. Theythought that groups of men in different industries could manu-facture and exchange their products, and if they obtained capitalby Co-operative shopkeeping they thought they would manu-facture and exchange their products, village by village, town bytown, and country by country. That was their ideal. Theiridea had been upset because of the industrial revolution whichhad harnessed machinery to the process of production. Conse-quently the Co-operative idea had had to take a somewhatdifferent line to that which the pioneers of Co-operation thoughtit would taLe and tried to establish. The'mission of Co-operationwas Bom just as it was then to distribute wealth more widelyand equitably. But in the place of the old concerns there «verenom limited companies, trusts, and syndicates. In other wordscapital had become highly organized, and it was exceedinglydifficult to cope with the competition of highly-organized capital. It could not, in his view, be adequately coped with except byco-operation, productive co-operation, as pursued on the linesof the Co-operative Industrial Society, of which they were allpart with their connection with the Lincoln Society.

TACKLING MASSED CAPITAL.

To give them an illustration of exactly what he meant-Co-operation on its productive side was pursued by distributivesocieties. Their Lincoln Society was one of the greatest pro-ductive distributive societies in the United Kingdom. LincolnSociety produced in its various morkshops nearly as much asit bought co-operatively. It did very well in certain classesof industry. But the Co-operative Wholesale Society, with itsenormous rese&ves, tackled industries which no isolated bodiesof men could tackle with any prospects of success. He would givethem an instance. Only the previous meek he was in Scotland onthe business of the Co-operative Who!esale Society, and he sawin one factory, which produced goods used by the Lincoln Co-operative Society, and widely used, one machine which alone costgzo, ooo. There was only one organization in the country whichcould in any possible success cope with manufacture on suchextensive lines as that, and that was the Co-operative WholesaleSociety.

THE PHILOSOPF OF CAPITAL AND LABOUR.%Vali, let him show them why he believed this. He wanted to

prove it to them. The productive power of the workman maslimited to his head and two hands, hence his remu&to a great extent a fixed quantity, and would for
