Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. -Galatians 6:2

We have all lived through terrible things in our lives. The entire world has lived through so much suffering and loss due to COVID-19 with over 3.54 million deaths worldwide in-cluding 600,000 in the US. What most of us missed the most was each other. We are called to carry each other’s burdens. There is a He-brew phrase tikkun olam (pronounced tee-KOON oh-LUHM) which means "world re-pair." It is a Jewish concept defined by acts of kindness performed to perfect or repair the world. What a beautiful way to understand our place in the world! Instead of calling names and trying to get even, the call is to acknowledge the brokenness and then repair whatever we can in our daily lives. Most of us have heard about the Japanese philosophy of kintsugi. It is an ancient art prac-tice of putting broken pottery pieces back to-gether with gold bonding, also known as “golden repair.” This technique has been used for more than 400 years which involves com-bining lacquer with gold, silver or platinum to form new bonds. Kintsugi embraces imperfec-tions and authenticity so rather than hiding scars they are highlighted and celebrated. The new piece is stronger and often more beauti-ful.

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Peace and thanks, Pastor Lori Hope

Ecclesiastes 3:1 For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.

Five years ago, I began a journey to follow God’s call. Now the educational portion of that journey is quickly coming to an end. On June 6, I will gradu-ate from Luther Seminary but not to worry as I will remain here, as your intern, through July. There are still a few formal steps to complete be-fore I would, God willing, become eligible for a call and then ordination.

Whenever we step out in faith to follow a call from God, either individual or as a congregation, we have no idea what awaits us. I have had a few surprises along the path, and I am certain there will be more. The thing to remember is that God’s time is not your time. We can’t rush things; we can’t predict things. I guess what really matters is that we keep moving forward.

Now I would like to give an update on “Ava” the avocado seed that made an appearance in one of my March Children’s Sermon. It has been about two months and Ava is alive and well. She is cracking as she should be, and a small root has emerged from the bottom. If you would like to see Ava, you can look through the office window from the walkway. She is sitting in a glass of water on the window ledge. I will continue to care for Ava and will give another report before I leave.

Peace,

Vicar Lynn Marlowe

I will be working from home this summer except for a few Mondays I will be in the church office. Instead of coming back to the office in the Fall when my kids go back to school, I have decid-

ed to go back to school as well! I will be pursu-ing a Radiologic Technologist degree through Avera McKennan Hospital. It is a full-time, two year program. I have had a tugging to do this for awhile, but have always pushed it aside as it ‘just wasn’t the right time’, but as I’ve learned, there will never be an ‘ideal’ time. This decision did not come without bittersweet feelings. St. Mark’s has always offered me tremendous sup-port and flexibility throughout my time here and I will be forever grateful to you all. I have loved getting to know each and every one of you and will miss seeing you. I will be in the church office for my last week, August 23-26.

Bible Study

Revelation – A unique study ...

Beginning June 24 and continuing for four Thursday evenings, we will explore the uniqueness of Revelation. The Lamb, and Horses, and Beasts – Oh My! Over four sessions we will do an overview of Revelation and then delve into why a church was told to avoid BBQs, the meaning behind the Four Horseman, and unlock a puz-zle behind the number ‘666’. This study will be in the church Thursdays, 7:00pm - 8:00pm. Please call or email the Vicar to sign up or with questions. Vicar 605-332-4092 or email: [email protected]

NEW MEMBERS MAY 29 & 30, 2021 Jenny Adair My daughter, April Wessels, son-in-law Steve and two granddaughters, Ashtin and Camdyn live here in Sioux Falls and Rich Lauer is “my significant other!!” My son, Bo Adair, died in the year 2000; my hus-band, Bill, died in 2014. My last work was as Director of the Child Development Center in Little Rock (the CDC is part of the First United Methodist Church, my church home in Little Rock). Rich introduced me to St. Mark's and I am looking forward to being a member of the St. Mark's family! Davina Fanciullo Hello! My name is Davina Fanciullo. I am excited to be joining St. Mark’s and looking forward to meeting my fellow church members! I am originally from Janesville, WI. I was born and raised in the Lutheran faith with a Swedish/Norwegian/German background. We raised quarter horses and Nubian goats. I graduated from Black-hawk College in 1992 with a degree in Nursing. I worked in the field of hematology and bone marrow transplant at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for 5 years. It was there I met my wonderful hus-band, Joe. He is originally from Omaha, NE, and was at UW to complete his medical residency at that time. We married in 1997 and moved to Sioux Falls shortly afterwards. I worked at Sioux Valley Hospital on the medical surgical unit and Joe took a position as a Rheumatologist with University Physicians. We have two daughters. Rachael is 21 and attends Gustavus Adolphus College. She is active on the ten-nis team and plays piano. Christina is 19 and attends the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. She is ac-tive on the cheer team and ice skating team. They fill our hearts with so much joy, and we can’t wait to have them back home for summer. Of course, our home wouldn’t be complete without our two pups, Chloe and Reba, Hammond the hamster, and Jerry the lizard! I voluntarily went through “Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults” in 1996 as preparation to marry Joe. He comes from a Catholic background. Though I feel grateful for having experienced another denomi-nation, I have always felt something in my life was missing. When I saw that St. Mark’s was having a cel-ebration of St. Lucia, so many memories of my younger years came flooding back to me. It was then that I first walked into St. Mark’s Church with my daughters 6 years ago. This led me to attend a Sunday service. Afterwards, I could not let go of the feeling that I needed to return to my Lutheran roots. The friendliness from Pastor Lori and each member I encountered was incredibly welcoming. For this, I am so grateful. I am excited to join this wonderful family in faith. I look forward to worshipping with you and also serving the community with you, as a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.

NEW MEMBERS MAY 29 & 30, 2021 Phil, Sarah, Bradley and Benjamin Van Egdom We are the Van Egdoms - Phil, Sarah, Bradley and Benjamin. There is never a dull moment in our household. We love animals! We have two pugs, a cat and two hamsters. You’ll find us spending time outdoors camping, fishing and playing at parks. Phil and I both grew up in South Dakota. He is from Hudson and I am from Canton, but we currently reside in Sioux Falls. We are excited to be members of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church! Karen Zingmark (joined May 24, 2020) Pastor Lori asked me to share some information about myself -- like honking my own horn at the church services. That will be a memory. I like reading mysteries, memoirs, historical fiction, just about everything. I chose St. Mark’s because of two of my sisters, Loretta Olson and the late Nancy Langen-feld. This is the church I visited when I came from Mankato for a weekend. I am now retired, having an eye problem and walking difficulties. So glad I went on the trip to Greece in 2015, following the steps of Paul. The journey was impressive.
